I had my first two jaw surgeries in 1991. Around 2010 I had surgery to remove some screws and plates that had moved and were hurting me whenever I smiled. They were the ones in the maxilla behind the nose. The surgeon tried to remove everything but he said he could only take out the one screw that was poking me because the rest was embedded in the bone and would cause a fracture to take it out. I just had my third surgery in April and this time the surgeon had to remove everything in maxilla first before he put in new plates and screws. He was not able to remove the screws in the mandible because they are really hard to access after such a long period. I ended up having vertical ramus osteotomy for my lower jaw surgery so the screws from the old saggital split were not in the way. Thankfully I don't really have any allergies and the titanium plates never bother me unless they move :)

Your physical therapist definitely sounds like she knows what she’s talking about when it comes to jaw/TMJ issues. Would you feel comfortable sharing your PT’s name and info? I’d love to work with one like her.

@@meganschall : Thank you so much! How are you doing now in regards to your jaw/TMJ symptoms?

@@rachelanne2684 things are pretty good in terms of function and reduced head/neck pain etc.! There is still likely a little bit of orthodontic work I'd like to do to tweak my bite, but giving everything some time to settle before deciding on any further treatment :)

@@besapeposhi3864 I am doing MELISA testing: melisa.org/ I believe you have to have a physician order the test for you, but from what I understand, this test is the most accurate to identify sensitivities or allergies to metal implants!

@@besapeposhi3864 Ha, me either! I'd of course prefer *not* to have more surgery, but will also be willing to do it if it seems like the best option :)
