Hi Joey! Thanks so much for sharing your story. My heart broke when you talked about the EMT saying he wishes he could have seen you sooner. You are so strong - even though this happened to you, you are still thriving in your personal and professional life! Wishing you all the best

I was 22 when I had SSHL. I developed a Staph infection and was given calculated dosages of medication. Unfortunately the after effects were possible hearing loss. I woke up on New Year’s Day with vertigo and a headache. I was given steroid injections and remember crying my eyes out as the ENT specialist told me there was nothing they could do to regain my hearing. It has been quite challenging being in loud places but I look back on how I managed to grow and adapt. It’s comforting hearing your story. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for your story and bravery. My 65 year old wife has SSHL, started 36 days ago. Primary care doc put her on Medrol Dosepack for a believed sinus infection. At two weeks, ENT started her on oral Prednisone 60mg/day for two weeks. At 3.5 weeks, hearing just slightly improved from total loss to severe, (12% word recognition) so ENT suggested injection that day. She wasn't ready for it. Another week later and the audiology exam showed more improvement, to 52% word recognition. Her speech reception threshold dropped to 50db from 80db. ENT said hearing loss now considered moderate to moderately severe, and that a hearing aid might now probably help, and wanted to do the injection again, but wife balked and asked for another week. We know the results vary, but we also know time is of the essence, and she is scheduled for her 1st injection tomorrow, but she's probably not going to do it out of fear that she'll have permanent side effects, like her ear permanently feeling full, or a return of the white noise or tinnitus, or just anything else that would make things worse. Initially the other effects of the hearing loss were very bad (white noise, ear feeling full) and they've eased to the point where she feels she can live with "the devil she knows vs the one she doesn't." I think she should absolutely get the injection(s), but it's not my body and I don't know what she went through for the first month, I only watched her suffer. I know people's success rate varies greatly, but has anyone gotten worse after the injections and/or had permanent side effects from it? Or the opposite? Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

Oh I’m so sorry to hear that’s happened to your wife. The tinnitus remains after the 3 rounds of intratympanic steroid injections that I got. I don’t know anything different at this point since it’s been over 6 years. The tinnitus can be tuned out and at times, I do forget it’s there because I’m so used to it constantly ringing. Hearing aid is also a great option for her. It’ll definitely bring her back up to a more “normal” hearing experience. Technology has really advanced in the hearing aid world. Hope for the best! Time is definitely of the essence when it comes to SSHL

@@joeytaiii Do you just wear a hearing aid in one ear? How do you like it compared to the CROS?
@joeytaiii

@allenklau I wear a CROS in my left ear and a regular hearing aid in my right. You need both for the cros to work - it takes some brain training to get used to but it’s the best option right now

@@joeytaiii thank you for your original reply and for the CROS info. My wife never got the injections (and doesn't regret it) and she estimates that she has about 70% of her hearing back, but she has all this white noise in her ear that really bothers her and "taxes her brain" and causes a chicken/egg thing or catch-22 between her hearing loss and anxiety where each one exacerbates the other. (As well as the anxiety exacerbating her other medical conditions). It happens that this afternoon she's seeing her ENT to follow-up on hearing aids, and I'll mention CROS. Side note: through all of this, I started paying more attention to my own ears - particularly this warbling/pulsating feeling I get in my left ear sometimes. I finally identified a cause - it happens as soon as I turn on my microwave to cook something. Then I realized it happens when a lawn mower is running anywhere within a house or two of mine. Finally I noticed that playing my guitar (or even listening to a guitar video on YT) causes it. I saw my wife's ENT's PA, and they did the audiology exam and I have moderate hearing loss in my left ear! She removed substantial wax from my left ear and suspected it might reduce the pulsating, but it didn't and it only seems to be getting worse, and I've played thousands of hours of guitar and never noticed it before, and it somewhat makes me sick when it's going on. I told her it was getting worse, or at least more noticeable now to me and caused by several specific items, and they want me to come in again -but I have zero faith they have any idea of what it is, or the ability to do anything. It's nothing nearly as serious as what you and my wife are dealing with, but it still sucks - especially the guitar part b/c it's a major part of my life that is being compromised. Such is life I guess. :-( I've yet to hear anyone complain about something similar, but I wonder if one of my medications caused it, but I'll probably never know.

Ahhh those injections are horrific! I would never do them again ever. Your story is so much like mine. I do now finally have a diagnosis of inner ear autoimmune disease. Thank goodness I now know it’s something I could not have prevented. It is soul crushing when you can’t hear. Lip reading is great but I urge you to look at cochlear implants over the CROS hearing aid.

Same thing happened to me but I was able to gain more hearing with time. My tinnitus is a constant static humming sound I hate it especially if am in a quiet room/car with windows up it’s so annoying and get me down all the time so I constantly have sound playing on my phone

Im experiencing the same now. Canadas ER system really sucks. They treated my case as ear infection. So I lost the time to get oral steroid or ear drum steroid. And Im still waiting to see an ENT, which they won't consider my case as urgent. And most hospitals don't have an on call ENT. What a joke. So how r u doing now? Did u get any hearing aids?
