The fuel rail is indeed garbage, but this failure is a very common failure with all modified engines. The fuel rail is a pressurized system so once its pressurized all injectors should see the same fuel and not be starved. What's a bigger concern is heat. Because cylinder 7 is the last cylinder to receive oil,and coolant its the hottest cylinder on the line. The coolant has to flow around all the other cylinders and absorb heat from them so by the time it gets to the back its literally almost boiling... That combined with revs and aggressive tunning causes detonation to become a very high probability on the last cylinder. More than likely he ran hot, detonated and cracked a ring land then broke the piston crown. Pretty common stuff... To fight this issue ford added extra oil and water lines on the rear of the 5.2 aluminator engines. But even regular Coyotes and voodoos blow up like this. Infact pretty much every engine always blows cylinder 7 first not a hell cat specific issue just tge nature of the beast

@Jim Puehl Yes I agree but even the manufacturer of the blower suggested to change the fuel crossover. Without examining the parts it is not easy to see with a camera. The injectors could cause the problem. Anytime that you pull that kind of power out of a small engine things go wrong and break. I was a machinery dealer for years and sold engines to the coal mines in New Mexico, Arizona, Kansas, Missouri and so on. You need to know failure analysis or you go broke.

The fuel rail story is a joke. If it would be a fuel rail issue, cylinder 1 would have been toast along time ago. I agree with Timothy Aldrich, I would punch the tuner in the mouth. So many hacks out there. Instead of properly tuning an engine, they de-sensitize the knock sensor or disable them all together. They push ungodly amount of timing into the engine, and call it good. If tuned correctly, it should have thrown a misfire on that cylinder. Any evidence of what the A/F was during meltdown? I would highly recommend an on demand data logger. It will tell you the true reason an engine grenades. As for what happened..I would highly suspect a failed fuel injector. It only takes one to wipe a 20K engine.

6 decades of racing on a high level I have destroyed my share of race built motors and to this day I have never seen pieces of cylinder #7 end up in cylinder #1as those can not travel upstream in the induction system against high velocity airflow. Second issue is that I routinely push boost above 6 bar and have never seen fuel starvation in the first cylinder one the rail and still have correct burn downstream beyond . You will find an injector issue as the cause of that if I am understanding what he is attempting to explain. Thirdly the weakness of the rubber hose would not restrict flow of fuel nor fuel pressure and on my 2400 HP LS 5.3 we run two sets of injectors at full cycle with one set in the stock location and rail position and the second within the intake with a second set of rails all fed at 50 psi and with a pump and hoses sized to handle the required volume. You may also have failed to properly gap the rings for boost expansion!

Ernest things are just the same as when I started with hot rodding cars nearly 50 years ago. Nearly every engine has some deficient areas along with the fact that none of them are made to run as hard as we do when we race. Just because they can run 5/6/7/8 thousand rpm and put out a lot of power it can't do that as long as we would like. About the first thing any hot rodder or racer learns is that things are going to fail, even the best parts. I agree with you this was likely a barely adequate fuel system. Add mods and racing it produces this kind of thing. Where I get my chuckles and get sad for the stupidity is when these modders do all the power stuff, race them and there goes the trannies and rear ends. That is the real can of worms even over motors. I rarely see any real car experts on you tube. In fact those kind don't and usually don't need to make videos.

Blame the cross over for starving 7, okay if fuel starvation was the issue then holes 1 and 3 which are the furthest from the cross over would be the holes being destroyed not 7 which gets the most fuel on the odd bank being the closest to the crossover. The real issue is not the rails or cross over it's the fact 7 is at the rear of the motor and has lack of coolant flow and oil flow, those holes run hotter but this to me is more of a tunner issue and lack of fuel pump capacity

Yeah being a 40 year NASCAR fan and having a very good extensive knowledge of internal combustion engines , there’s been many races in the past where a car would run out of fuel going around the track and about 50% of the time it’s detrimental and usually burns a piston because of the lean condition at the high ribs and speed it happens instantly, knowing that is high performance as these car engines are people take for granted that all the systems work properly to keep this from happening when you push the limits the percentage of it being possible goes up I would’ve upgraded the rail and pump if necessary to make sure there was a good margin of extra fuel available at any time to make this almost impossible.. at the boost level you are at the margin is very thin for mistakes, as far as the clutch chalk it up to this Dodge makes such a huge horsepower when they built these cars everything on them was built to exceed the margins unlike a Ford.... most of the aftermarket junk out there will not perform as well as the tested engineered parts for dodge..... The added boost increased the cylinder pressure which increased heat in the combustion chamber. The top piston ring expanded because of this increased heat. It expanded to the point that the ends of the ring contacted each other. With no more room, they pressed upwards, breaking the ring land at the top of the piston. Increase boost, increase ring gap. Or it will happen again and again. BTW, when you already have 700hp on tap, you don't need more HP to go faster, you need nothing more than better tires and traction

Even the best race engines fail. Factory new engines sometimes fail. If you go to Cummins or Detroit for 1050 hp you will get a 28 to 38 litter engine that weighs as much as your car, You should have changed the fuel rail. still what fun to drive.

@@SealofPerfection I know very well how engines work, I have been building race engines for more than 15 years. Ring lands are fitted to 2 strokes pistons to stop the rings rotating, 4 stroke pistols do not have them. Google will be your friend here, if you need any more education feel free to ask.

From the piston you showed it looks like you had too much heat going on and the ring gap got closed fairly quickly and had nowhere else to go so it forced its way up. Common for people who dump a lot of boost to an engine without gapping the rings accordingly.

It's weird that the #7 cylinder detonated when it is the cylinder right off the fuel rail pass over. You would think #1 would've been fuel starved first. Sucks either way man, j just had #7 go bad on my R/T. Sounds like Dodger needs a new way of thinking when it comes to fuel delivery.
@curvs4me

Man oh man! You have it open so definitely forged pistons and rods machine the block. Drop the compression to 9:1 and get a comp cam xfi 226/234. Like $1200 and $550 head porting and 5 angle valve job $600-1000. It's not a freebie but the motor will be good for about 1200hp when everything else is ready to take the power. For now you can make 900 with less boost, maybe even pump gas. Cam is 2100-7000 rpm with shift at 7500. With the stronger rotating assembly that new redline is fine. It's probably close to 700hp naturally aspirated with that setup, less the compression ratio. That is definitely what I would do when faced with having to buy the parts anyway less the cam. A used shortblock and running on the edge of failure is not always so good. You aren't going to see any improvement in your times. Beefing it up to make the same HP without breaking a sweat is my vote. When you can beef up the drivetrain you can just add boost back in.

Same thing is happening with Mustang motors. They are boosting these reasonably well designed (for a taxi or a truck) motors to produce lots of power, but they are not using quality components to handle it. I am in Australia. In 2018 manufacturers were required to provide 7 year warranties on new cars. Immediately, Ford stopped selling the Mustany here and then Chysler-Jeep (now Fiat), had spent a lot of money on converting the Charger to RHD, cancelled the model. The most they would warrant them was 3 years. That says everything for their faith in their product.

Think about fuel flow the same way you do air flow and you can see the problem in the rail. There is a boat load of turbulence caused by the 90 degree feed line right at that cross over inlet. And fuel going lean is death for a race motor.
