What does that mean? Are you saying that quirks are unbalanced and some will just be more overpowered because they are? Being overpowered in MHA can be dangerous. You manifest your quirk at 4 or 5 and for Chisaki, he could've ended up killing his parents. We never got to see his real parents, I think we know why. Overpowered quirks are never good for the character unless you know before hand, which you don't. For Deku, he got a quirk at 14, but before hand he knew that he had a quirk. Hell even Dekus quirk made him break his bones and almost die multiple times. Explosion was never OP from the start, but Bakugou made it super OP. Theres a reason why he's not dead yet. He's actually smart. i agree that some quirks are way better and complex than other quirks but there are different ways that you can "shoot fire". if your talking about "shooting fire", do you mean contorlling fire? just spewing it out? Can you charge it up? can you expand it or make it smaller? You see???

Jjba: I can shoot fire Also Jjba: Those who commit an act of "Pursuit" against the stand will suffer from "The Flow of Calamity." Anyone affected by the flow of calamity will be subject to a series of incidents with the intent to kill or disable that person. In the case of multiple pursuers, whoever is the most recent or active in pursuing Wonder of U, or Tooru himself, becomes the priority target. After the first person dies from a calamity, the ability moves on to the next target, creating a stacking effect. Only the highest priority target will be affected by the ability at any given time. The range of the ability is unclear, but it appears to be infinite as long as the victim retains the intent to pursue. The stand can also phase through walls and hover in the air. It also seems to be able to teleport at will, as it completely disappeared when being pursued by Rai. Later on, it was able to instantly shift places between TG University Hospital and the Higashikata House. In addition to its ability to teleport directly between locations at a distance, Wonder of U can also move rapidly within a smaller area by gliding along and within flat, reflective surfaces. Though Wonder of U is an automatic stand, Tooru seems to have a limited ability to control Wonder of U directly, effectively allowing him to be in two places at once. When Tooru is actively controlling Wonder of U, his eyes glaze over and have a dull look. When Tooru is back in control of himself, Wonder of U seems to stand facing a wall if it is not actively reacting to a pursuer. If someone observes the stand in this state, they will see Satoru Akefu with his eyes dull and glazed over. While the specific stat rankings for Wonder of U are not known, it has demonstrated proficiency in using its cane as a defensive tool. It has been shown rapidly deflecting a flurry of frozen bubbles as well as deflecting a precision shot from Josuke. Calamity Wonder of U's main ability revolves around the concept of 'Calamity', bringing impending doom to anyone pursuing Tooru or Akefu (the Stand's 'human' form). The pursuit does not have to be in the form of a direct chase, as even the intention, will, or desire to pursue Wonder of U in the future will cause the stand to activate. The intent to pursue seems to need to be more than just coincidental, however, as Akefu had to coax a declaration of intention out of a reporter who threatened to expose him. Only when the reporter's intention was clearly stated to be in pursuit of Akefu and the Rokakaka was Wonder of U able to kill the reporter with a calamity. This is in contrast to the crowd of hundreds of people who came to the hospital with the specific intention of listening to a presentation given by Akefu, none of whom were affected by a calamity. It is also possible to act in a way which would cause Tooru or Wonder of U to pursue the target, instead of the other way around. If this occurs, the stand will not activate its ability. This makes it possible to close the distance with the user or the stand without triggering it. The exact form the calamity takes varies, but always involves redirecting aspects of the nearby environment towards the target in a harmful manner. Upon contact with any object influenced by part of the calamity, the target receives an extremely disproportionate amount of damage, especially from impacts. The damage the object can cause will only affect the target, and not obstacles in the way or bystanders unaffected by the calamity. Objects touched directly by Wonder of U can be "charged" with calamitous energy as well, allowing the stand to create additional area hazards. If the target manages to avoid or survive a calamity, another one will always follow shortly afterwards. Examples of this ability include: During a pursuit of the head doctor, Rai Mamezuku tripped over an umbrella stand hard enough to cause compound fractures in both legs. A bus containing the head doctor kicked up a cigarette butt with enough force to penetrate Josuke's hand. While slicing vegetables, a minor slip of the knife resulted in Mitsuba Higashikata cutting off two of her fingers and triggered a chain reaction of events that nearly led to her being lethally scalded by oil. When Josuke and Rai were caught in a rain storm, the raindrops hit with the force of bullets - penetrating through limbs and doing enough damage to knock Josuke unconscious and require a trip to the hospital. At the hospital, a police officer who Josuke knocked out fell on top of him, breaking two ribs and damaging his left lung in the process. A leaf on the Higashikata estate fell with enough force to slice off Joshu's fingers. The instant Yasuho continued to pursue Tooru at the Higashikata estate, a piece of an airplane 10,000 meters above ground broke off and fell directly towards her. The stand can even influence the Locacaca's 'Equivalent Exchange' - when Josuke tried to drink the serum while still intending to pursue Wonder of U, the exchange happened in a way that threatened to suffocate him. Only when someone else without the intent to pursue administered the serum for him was it able to perform a normal exchange. Wonder of U will apply calamitous effects to any object in the area of the target in an attempt to kill or disable them. When Rai was testing the limits of Wonder of U's ability while in prison, he was attacked by spilling liquid and an exploding light bulb. When those calamities failed to damage him, a normal tray of food suddenly became diseased, and erupted with maggots and a dying rat. In the absence of any objects which can be propelled at the target to create an impact, Wonder of U seems to have the ability to affect nearby people and influence their behavior or actions. This was first seen in the Hospital parking lot when a nearby patient got unusually angry with Josuke and advanced to touch him. When Jousuke prevented contact using his bubbles, the man's neck snapped 90 degrees to the side, killing him instantly. This has also been observed with a prisoner going into a rage and attacking Rai and Joshu going berserk and attacking Yasuho. Dying from a calamity or losing the will to "intend to pursue" either Tooru or Akefu will remove the target from the calamity priority stack. It is revealed in Jojolion chapter 108 that even after Tooru's death, Wonder of U can act due to the fact that it represents, and is made from the idea of the Calamity itself, with Rai even theorizing that it was born from a some type of "calamity energy". This makes it the second stand to be made out of a supernatural force, the first being Ball breaker .

17:01 May I direct you to the literal first line of dialogue in the entire manga: "Not all men are created equal." That's the entire point of the power system, it's meant to reflect the truth of actual reality, if this "flaw" was corrected then arc after arc would have its subtext stripped away and rendered shallow. The victories that people with weak quirks achieve against technically strongers opponents with better quirks are admirable due to the power difference, they won through effort and intelligence rather than relying on the talents they were born with to the point of stagnation.

** MANGA SPOILERS ** I think that having the quirks influence the character themselves is very interesting. Their quirks directly affect the people on a molecular level. And they dont even realize it. Their personalities are built on the quirk they will have. A good example is Toga. Her quirk requires her to drink blood in order to transform. That directly made her interested in blood. As a child who didn't completely understand the meaning of pain and death, she killed small animals. Her interests were predetermined by her quirk that she was born with. it literally determines all of her interests because it affects her on a molecular level. and one day, it lead her to kill her crush. She didn't kill him just because she wanted to, but rather it was like a primal instinct inside her and it was driven by her quirk.

Toga is rather tragic, I have had a running theory for a while that she was probably told in quirk counseling(I think I heard somewhere schools do this) to repress her urges leading to the incident. I want to touch on the Rigid Power Hierarchy. Not everyone is made to be a hero. And someone like la brava wouldn't be a hero with her quirk. They can't control what quirks they get, so they have to just stick with it. La Brava could've become a hero, but she needs someone who she loves to be her partner. Sidekicks are a thing in the hero world. But if you want to be a solo hero, Mineta would be great. he could use his balls and just make a floppy sword or just have a ball blast but instead of just doing it randomly, he can think strategically. Mineta can even use his balls to get past obsticales and use them to jump. Anyways, I do agree, horikoshi is getting way better at more action/combat fights rather than flashbacks and emotional shit. I love it a lot. The endeavor agency arc fight was very short, but it had lots of action. We got to see Deku use his new skills and actually help a lot, we got to see Todoroki and Bakugou improve a lot, character and power, and the tensions are just getting way higher. even in the current arc shigaraki is bodying everyone but it isn't constant flashbacks or conversations, it's just constant action with a little touch of emotion. Wether is be anger, sadness, or even worrieness.
@LordZeebee

Honestly i kinda feel like it's a bit reductive to say "this power is better than that power" for like 99% of all quirks we've seen. Sure, Todoroki has a very good general quirk but even Mineta could conceivably outshine him under certain circumstances. For example, there is no way Todoroki could ever restrain All Might but since Mineta's balls have been implied to not really have an upper limit other than just the time they stay sticky he could potentially do so. Mirio is another example of a quirk that would traditionally be considered "shit-tier", it's even acknowledged in the series. Yet he's found a way to use it to amazing effect. I think in MHA it's way more accurate to say "this person is more powerful" as opposed to " this power is more powerful" and that can lead to some great character exploration.

I really like Stands in Jojo because of how vague yet specific they are. Every stand has it's own specific rules and limitations, but there are no overall rules that apply to every stand. Even the "rules" that Araki created for stands can be broken by certain stands (like how Shigechi won't take damage even if his stand gets hurt)
@JustAlex2000

Actually this was explained in Purple Haze Feedback. The reason why army type stand users don't take damage is because it goes through every single unit of their stand. Afaik Sigechi had like 500 of harvest so if someone stabbed one of them, this stab "Damage" would have to go through 500 of those guys before reaching sigechi, making the stab and most damage, virtually useless.

When a few months after this mineta gets development it kinda blows the quirks are rigidly set in a hierarchy argument out of the water , while they do have a hierarchy a major factor is that aspects of certain quirks are missed or overlooked by their users; like how [Minor Manga Spoilers from here on] Minetas balls repel him. These minor aspects may be easy to overlook and seem unimportant but can entirely change the way the quirk is used, such as changing mineta from a backup fighter to a pseudo power type. This was even very well set up in the early parts of the anime when all might mentions that the exact function of a quirk is often misunderstood or overlooked which means that quirks will frequently need to updated. tl;dr - Developments of powers has more to do with changing how they're used than adding more powers to the existing one, with 'weaker' powers typically having more unique and unusual applications
@slothful2039
4 жыл бұрын
One thing I will say about MHA's power system is that even though there can be great disparities between quirks the fact that there are so many unique abilities that don't so much rely on a homogeneous power system in MHA means that certain abilities that may seem "weaker" than a different ability can actually triumph. This creates a lot of possible counters and even some hard counters more so I'd say than other series. For example overhaul's quirk which allows him to disassemble and reassemble matter at a very impressive scale may be insanely strong, but its strengths which mainly align on the physical side could be easily circumvented by a character like shinso thanks to brainwashing. If overhaul simply answers one of his questions (no matter how trivial of a question) he can force him to answer any of his verbal commands and thus be restrained. There's also the fact that pretty much every quirk has a drawback some of which that can be very unique at times. Bakugou's explosions are sweat based and thus he'd be weaker in colder climates, kaminari's qurik lets him generate electricity but he can't really control the direction and discharging too much at once fry's his brain for a decent amount of time. These drawbacks also bring in another factor in MHA tools and support items. These can help circumvent certain drawbacks and even boost quirks applications tremendously.

It's not supposed to make sense. That's the real beauty of it. It doesn't get bogged down with "how" or "why" and just does. One big issue I have with Marvel is that they try to make all their powers, no matter how fantastical, all make sense scientifically or make it more realistic. The best example of this is the absolute comedy that is the bending over backwards to explain Cyclops's eye-beams. Whereas in MHA, it's just like, "yeah, this dude can shoot lasers, what more do you want", in Marvel, it's like, "Uh... he has like... portals. To another dimension. In his eyes. Likewise, I don't agree that it's okay that certain things don't make sense in this universe. Anime or not, the show should still follow it's own logic and rules set in place to avoid inconsistencies or questionable instances. Not everything needs to be explained in great detail, but the series shouldn't let it's fantastical thematics take away from the fact that it's still attempting to tell a nuanced story about a super hero society and how super powers or rather "quirks" come into play with how heroes and villains operate. Enhancer:Can enhance their own capabilities through their own will such as hardening their skin, adapting to a new environment, augmenting their muscles, lengthening body parts as well as change the properties of a foreign factor such as strengthening another person, causing plants to grow extremely fast and large, making food taste good, passing over your own physical power to another person. For example Bakugou: Emitter Type Elemental. Izuku:Emitter Type Enhancer. Mineta:Mutant Type Manipulator. Tenya:Mutant Type Enhancer. Ochako:Emitter Type Manipulator. I think one of the biggest perils that can happen with soft power systems is that because its so vague and the potential for "anything can happen" can happen, so its very important to not make sure to not just let things happen for plot convince. Especially when its a magic system that follows with a more realism driven tone(? i guess you could call it that). Like how they compare the usage of quirks comparable to the use of a muscle in your body. It can be strengthen and developed but it has its limits. When the show starts saying (like in La Brava's case) that her love is her super power it comes off more like "tv tropes are quirks now". So it easily becomes a slipperly slope for the narrator to navigate, to keep from the audience feeling like the author can pull any manner of bullshit at any given moment because there is so much wiggle room.

In order for her quirk to get stronger she had to form love for someone and build it up to be more powerful. It does develop along similar lines as other quirks. Wherever the source of your power comes from, that's what you need to 'work out' to make it stronger.

🔸Hey Oceaniz, fyi You forgot to include intelligence in the Power System of Life. Example: even if someone has tools, karate, and Superior Body strength and speed. They can still be tricked into doing a karate kick off a bridge or Landing in a manhole lol. Intelligence allows you to set traps, predict your opponents actions ect.
@vanirsama2186
5 жыл бұрын
@Conrad Ferrus errr intellect can be used to trick opponents, smart opponents will use their surroundings to make traps as physical is always not a viable option, this often lead to the physical guy getting overwhelmed or being stubborn and just run straight ahead of the smart guy punching him, if with tools then the smart guy option is to read the guy and predict where and how he/she fight as often people who uses tool are weak in physical or mental strenght, then with techniques they will often uses what they were taught for for example karate guy will use karate attacks, so the smart guy run the f away because he is no match to a guy who knows karate and will kick/punch u to the face ur near and calls for backup or lead him/her to a open area where the smart guy has many opportunities to make a strategy to defeat this guy. Basically it depends on how u act and think, physical guy would often rush after u, tool guy would keep his/her distance, and technique guy would wait for ur attack since most martial arts are defensive rather than offensive.

I disagree with your assessment of quirks as a soft magic system. Yes, quirks can be basically anything, but the actual mechanics of individual quirks are limited and specific (barring a few exceptions, of course) Mineta, for example, cannot suddenly start shooting fire. He creates balls that stick to everything, except himself. That’s it. Yes characters can apply their quirks in interesting and creative ways to get powerful results, but I’d say that’s a defining characteristic of hard magic systems. SPOILERS AHEAD The reason why quirks can come across as softer than they actually are is because a good chunk of the core cast quirk’s operate as soft magic. The specific mechanics of One for All and All for One are partially defined, but still quite vague and are way way softer than every other quirk in the series. The other main quirk that falls in this category is Eri’s time reversal power, since the exact extent of how it operates is unclear. Overhaul said it could turn a person into a monkey, but if all it does is reverse a persons physical status to a previous point in their life, wouldn’t the person become an unfertilized egg and become “unborn”, not actually devolve? But we know it has some level of genetic alteration powers as that’s how it can remove/restore quirks. Yet when Deku fought with Eri, all she does is keep rewinding his body to how it was before he used a 100% attack. If her power really could devolve someone if used carelessly, we surely would’ve seen some sign of it with Deku as he got absolutely drenched in her power before Aizawa shut it off.

@zusfrankenstein8561
4 жыл бұрын
I think that's because Nen in HxH isn't an innate power everyone is born with naturally. I mean, there is that element to it, but its more like magic in a traditional fantasy setting where you learn special techniques or methods of using it, and obviously, someone would want to choose a technique that suited them the best. Whereas in MHA, the characters have grown up all their lives with their power, to the point that it's a core part of their self image. Think about people who are tall or short in real life. Their physical traits may inform a portion of their personality. Same thing for Quirks.
@MrMarinus18
3 жыл бұрын
Indeed because there is a difference in the age of where they get them. In MHA characters get them at a very young age before they're doing anything deliberate. So from their perspective the quirk has always been there. It has been a part of them ever since they can remember and they grew up with it. in HxH powers come much later and so the characters have forged an identity without their powers.

There is one subcategory that Monoma himself points out to in the manga. The static quirks over the quirks that require energy gathering. The later were his duds because he couldn't replicate the energy that was gathered in the first place(he basically copied the quirk at level 0 but he wouldn't have time to develop it). That's one category that kind of mirrors chi or chakra where energies and how you use them play a major roll. They can also be trained and improved on as long as there is an energy reserve. Three characters come to mind: Midorya, Eri and Fat Gum

13:30 not metaphor. a sword that one has become skilled with is a metaphorical extension of ones arm... the fingers on your hand are an actual extension of your hand not metaphorical extensions. Since the quirks are a part of them, a part of their DNA and something they grow up with their entire lives, it is an actual part of their person, and actual extension of their self in the same way as their arms are extensions of their body. with the exception of people who are given or granted quirks like all for one or one for all, in which case the mastery of these non-native quirks could be seen as either a metaphorical extension of their body as it is a fake body part, or an actual extension as it is still a part of their body, biology, and self. 17:15 probably should have picked one of deku and bakugou's classmates that didn't make it into the hero course, since mineta's quirk has been shown to be one of the brute force more powerful quirks on display. while the OVA of him holding down all might with his balls might be just a joke or with all might being severely handicapped by the training braces (like midnight) he wa able to group together dozens of water villians and withstand the force of a full all might smash during the USJ incident. 19:15 but that doesn't make it a negative, more of a grey. look at d&d, clerics and wizards use completely different mechanics, basically every class has mechanics unique to them that do not work with or in conjunction with other classes, but that uniqueness and diversity has never been seen as a downside for the P&P genre. if we look at the hero exam arc or the stain fight the fact that their powers didn't work together and they had to force them to interact in weird ways, like using ice to cool and engine so it can be used again quickly or when intelli devised different puzzles to knock out the quirks of the UA students so she could pick them off, having to adjust her plan and manipulate the different systems in her favor.

I've subbed and have started to devour through your videos! Love your take on analysis! Something I've enjoyed with the MHA power system is how with every quirk there is a negative side, Mineta bleeds if he pulls too many sticky balls, Bakugo can tear his ligaments and muscles by over using his explosions, Momo can exhaust her self by using to much of her energy stores/fat libids. Mirio's negative sides really took the cake which is what makes his (spoilers) fate even more depressing. It's really fun. AND (Spoiler) This entire concept of Quirk singularity thet he's introduced really makes sense, espically when it comes to how he introduced these quirks, how they started off simply and now becoming really overpowering. Eri and Overhaul are prime examples of quirks that are just crazy powerful. And Eri being unable to control her powers really hits that home. My theory is the only way to save the world...is to destroy quirks which subverts the idea of the power of escalation but de-escalation.. Anyway!! Thanks for posting!!

@dapperparraper860
5 жыл бұрын
I mean that's kind of hard because coming up rules for what makes a good power system is not a hard science or set in stone. But here are a few, check sandersons 3 laws of magic. I also learned usually good power systems reflect the themes of the series, ie. bending is in avatar(a show about balance), Alchemy in fullmetal alchemist(science), One for All can be passed down allowing anyone to become a hero etc. I also noticed power systems are based around something like bending is based on the four elements and alchemy is based on... alchemy. They also have simple names like nen, ki, bending and not some ridiculous mouth full like burning spirit of my inner demon. Now these rules are kind of vague and can easily be broken tbh, people like Harry Potter even though it probably has one of the softest magic systems out there so you can make a good soft magic system with few to no rules. Although in theory if your fights, power system or story is good enough it may be able to stand more or less on those specific aspects. Also another small note its usually a good idea to establish the two fighters powers before the battle starts HOWEVER, it is very common to not reveal a persons power till later in order to force the protagonist/character and by extension audience to figure out what the power is or what its weaknesses are. JoJo is a good example of this. The advantage of a soft system is it allows you to do almost anything and come up with really creative fights and powers, but the downside it is REALLY easy to power escalate and the audience may feel frustrated if you keep revealing powers the moment they are needed because even if you planned it before hand done to many times it can feel like an asspull. A hard power system is easier to "keep track of" and once the audience has scene enough powers you rarely have to reexplain how it works again unless some loophole is involved. Also another note figure out how the power system effects the environment around your, environment is an important factor in a fight. For example if you character has fire powers are they weaker in the rain, or do shadow powers get weakened in sunlight. This can force characters to rely on different techniques or applications of their abilities depending on the situation leading to more unique fight scenes. Another problem the taking into account environment handles is that often people will not have a character use a power for no reason, or the power will be REALLY powerful for like one use and become almost useless, or never used after that, and the environment can act as an explanation for that. For example if a character has a ball and chain they can't get off it will limit flight and maneuverability. Even if the powers don't rely on the environment per say there should still be environmental factors to consider that may allow for interesting strategies. For example even if fire isn't put out by water maybe it can be used to turn water to steam as cover/smokescreen. Also if you have multiple types of powers how do the interact with each other could you lets say have two people, or one person, use two powers in tandem to create something new or boost the effects of an existing power, does a certain power have an advantage against another power(if so why). Also if there IS a loophole in a power system its usually best to explain how it happened during a fight or leave the possibility open through word choice before the fight. Of course you could also have it as a mystery like WHAT how did that earthbender move metal that should be impossible, and have the characters figure out what happened etc.. Now like I said you don't have to follow these to a T and you can in theory make good power systems without some/any of these, but these are what I noticed. Most of these suggestions seem to lean to a harder power system, but I believe overall you can still make a soft power system with these suggestions by focusing on individual character abilities or spells etc..

Make a unique and non confusing but at the same time confusing power system, basically a paradox, it will make the reader think that they know what will happened next or how it will it happened yet a paradox happened that will make the readers confuse and when they analyze the scene they now kbow how it went down, dont add pointless exposition whole fighting such as revealing how the power work to make the readers investigate the scene and make them smarter, dont awe or make flashy power as its rlly common on other manga and just look at ur everyday object and get inspiration through that object for that power, it can either be from quotes, items, people, etc. The power system needs to fit the theme of ur story like nen from hunter x hunter, the power system doesnt need to be complicated nor does it need to look simple, it needs to be unique to not be a average manga nor be too complicated to make the readers bored and unrewardingn speaking of rewards the reader needs to feel rewarded and satisfy when they read ur power system or any other scene as it can make them read for more, lastly dont go with the trends but to create an original power system that can be supported with ur theme and make the readers feel smart and rewarded.

Ways horikoshi could improve in fights in MHA 1: have the main cast together learn the basics of fighting/martial arts. Similar to ur example fighting system for us irl. This can apply to any quirk user. This way we can see them applying basic fight mechanics into superpowers. This can avoid the whole " quirk chi" u mentioned 2: get more into choreography later on. I assumed the choreography wasnt present due to the kids being unskilled as they were not trained in martial arts 3(spoiler warning): stop having the main characters beat the boss antagonist in their first combative encounters. It makes all of the villians seem weak and kills the tension. Everytime the stakes are high i know deku or the good guys will inevitably win. Muscular, stain, overhaul, all for one, gentle... all beaten in their first combative encounters. N if they are going to have main antagonist get beat in the same encounter, lengthen them and give them rounds. 4: dont rely on melodrama for everyfight/conflict. I get that mha is more emotion driven and i respect how horikoshi does it but it needs a balance in the type of fights it has because wen every fight is highly melodramatic they all start feeling the same n its going to get boring. Over time the fights arent going to feel special and combined with the fact the mc always wins its going to loose substance. Keep writting emotional fights but add some more meat to them
@awesomesofar5963

i definetly agree about the martial arts part, i never got why isnt it a class in their school instead of PE. if you're going to fight someone you're gonna need to know some martial arts, and if you're clever enough find ways to combine your quirks with them to enhance your fighting style. for example, if kaminari had a weak surge of electricity surge throught his body for long periods, and then fight villans in hand ao hand combat when every hit he makes come's with a shock, he would have an easier way to fight multiple villains.

Unfortunately I have to disagree on some points I do agree working on techniques would be cool to see. But your forgetting the ochako already learned hand to hand combat and used it in battle. And mha is more of a realistic setting the villians are not just gonna be able to "get away and escape with a poof or magic instantly" in those situations their were serious stakes. Life or death. Success or total defeat. Loosing those fights would have changed the story extremely. Horikoshi tried this out with loosing bakugo and the league escaping through the portal quirk. Other than that the league travel in car since the dude with portal quirk has just been captured. I think horikoshi is trying out methods back to back. But with his large cast. And the fact he doesn't reuse that og shonen formula back to back people are upset. I think the mha World is most similar to hxh world in the essence that they both are set in a more modern realistic world. Horikoshi needs to study up on some togashi but 4 the part he's doing good Imo.
@stormintheshell5130

@@anthonyrodriguez351 ik ochako learned martial arts but i think it should just be automatic that everyone learns some kind as standard. If we're going by realism police, military, ect all learn some kind of martial arts /martial training(doesnt need to b flashy). Also i think the point you mentioned that -having characters loose changes the world to much - is the reason why it should be done more. It could just be a matter of taste but i prefer long running stories to not constantly go back to the status quo. To me it takes the significance out of the characters choices. Also im talking straight fights so bakugo getting captured barely counts, we all know that the main big fight of that moment was deku vs muscular. N deku won. If the good guys always win than the villians all look really weak. The villians dont seem threatening. I feel like an action show should make the villians feel like threatening worthy opponents to the protagonist at least for main antagonist. But I dont think that mha fights are awful or that horikoshi doesnt know what hes doing w his story. I really respect his work. But for the last part he actually does use the shonen formula alot actually. The show actually relies/uses more references n formulas than stand alone original ideas/content at least wat ive read so far in the manga.

You made a lot of great points about the strengths and weaknesses of the quirk system, but I think you left out some important stuff (though likely because it’s all pretty spoilery) We have started seeing some evolution in the MHA power system SPOILERS . . . . . . . . The quirk destroying bullets create a threat that is present for even most top tier characters of the world, but their incredible rarity means they don’t break the power system entirely. The existence of the quirk enhancing drug, which plays a much larger role in the spin-off Vigilantes, also creates the possibilities for seemingly useless quirks and characters to become real threats. Support items also provide a great way for characters to evolve their powers. Kaminari’s “shooter” is the best example of this. It eliminates some of the major restrictions that prevented him from participating in most fights as anything but a “megumin” style damage burst. However this new tool also has pretty severe limitations and doesn’t eliminate his limitation in how much he can use his quirk without handicapping his intelligence. Ayoma’s armour that allows him to direct his laser in different directions is another great example of this. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mineta got something like this soon too.

The power system in MHA works for other purposes quite well and adds to the social themes of the story and characterization of ALL members in the society which makes the fights packed with emotional investment but less appealing in a technical way. One Piece kind of has both types of power. You have Haki as the energy inside every living that needs to be awakened and the Devil Fruits that can be acquired in a character's journey. Then there are technological powers(SPOILER: like Pacifista and Raid Suits) and they can be combined with each other in many different ways.

I'd imagine we'll reach that point after graduation though I have no idea what could happen between now and then. Maybe it'll be like Harry Potter and school will get cancelled in their last year so they can go showdown with the villains and then just graduate after they're already basically superheroes.

Your definition of a soft power system does not match the typical definition of a soft system. Normally soft systems refer to the idea that the more mystical something is (think LOTR Ganfalf) and the less defined something is in terms of what you can do with it, the "softer" it is. Conversely, MHA is actually quiet a hard magic system, where the limits and uses of the individual powers is quiet well defined (Bakogo can make explosions, Deku can become stronger, Todoroki can use fire and ice) You also have a strange way of categorizing the quirks into "emitter, transformative, and mutation". It seems like a surface level classification more then anything. Quirks have been well defined to all pretty much work the same way, you have a quirk, you train that quirk, you get better with your quirk (see the training episode).

He means its soft in the way that there are no solid rules to follow. For example in Hunter X Hunter you are either an enhancer, Emitter, Transmuter, Manipulator, Conjurer or Specialist and either fall into one (or two categories with some specialist) or none. There is no in-between. However, in MHA there is no clear rules on how quirks work besides being born with one. You can be born with a countless potential of quirks, and each one has their own unique limitations or strengths with some more than others. Power systems are not s black and white as you make them out to be either, its not whether you system is soft or hard but how hard or soft it is. For example you could make a line graph like display and label various power systems from soft to hard(heres an example Harry Potter's Magic, Quirks, Nen, Bending, Alchemy from full metal alchemist). Another problem is your not viewing the power system as a whole but the individual. For example yeah I guess it would seem like a hard power system if you ONLY viewed deku's quirk and no other(he has super strength and that it) but we are describing quirks as a whole and for the most part quirks as a WHOLE have about two or three universal rules at best. By your logic Harry Potter would be a hard magic system due to the fact that you have to be born a wizard, say spells outload, and we only see certain people use certain spells depending on preference or learning. In fact most power systems will have aspects of both hard and soft magic systems and by trying to define them as soft or hard with no aspect of the other would cause almost nobody to agree on which are hard and soft because nobody would agree due to their focus on certain traits. it would be like saying on a color wheel there can only be red or yellow and nothing in-between, no one would have any idea where to place colors like orange and at the very least it would be debatable for both sides. In short the rules of quirks are pretty vague and soft.

I have to disagree with you on one thing, in particular. Your opinion on rigid hierarchies. For most of society, rigid hierarchies are most definitely a problem. But remember that the story only revolves around the people fortunate enough to get the long end of the stick. At the upper end of the spectrum, quirks don't have the inherently useful or useless traits you might see when looking at quirks as a whole because, obviously, at the upper level, all of the quirks have already been deemed useful in some way. For both heroes and strong villains alike, there is something about all of their quirks that can make them OP in certain situations. After all, they wouldn't be where they were if they didn't draw the perfect hand from birth. They each have very specific advantages and disadvantages that allows for most seemingly weaker quirks to have VERY powerful uses. In fact, it is a very important plot point in the anime that characters have to work with their quirks, train with them, and find those applications that all of them have somewhere within their abilities. This makes for a system that actually has very maneuverable tier systems. All it takes is for a character to either get in the specific circumstance that gives them the advantage or discover new, creative applications of the quirk. Mirio, for example, has a really dicky quirk at first. But now his quirk can be used for glitchy movement options through abusing physics with his intangibility underground. Quirks aren't rigidly ranked when it comes to the upper-echelons of quirk society. Only when looking at quirks as a whole is it applicable.

I would say point 1 of the negatives is a bit overstated. Yes the quirk system as a whole is incredibly vague, but each individual quirk is usually very complex. Having clear limitations usually told to us during the present mic "Quirk: ..." explanations. We usually do know the limitations of the quirk in those situations. I'm not saying the point is entirely invalid, especially in fights between heroes and villains rather than training battles between our heroes but, its definitely not as bad as was said.

Great video. However, there is an element of Quirks you didn't comment on: Quirk evolution. During the Villain arc, it is shown in no uncertain terms that a Quirk's power or efficiency can level up in various ways. Shigaraki is perhaps the biggest example of this, being able to destroy a significant part of a major city with just one touch, because his Decay is able to spread to other objects already being affected by his Decay, making it very much like a contagion. This was not how Decay worked earlier on in the story, so the very rules of how his power functions changed. Toga and Twice have similar Quirk evolutions as well showing that Shigaraki was not unique in this aspect. Then on another level, it is strongly implied that each new generation of Quirks are becoming more potent. For example, a pyromancer in gen 1 can create fire equal to a candle, gen 3 can generate a bonfire, gen 4 is Endeavor's Hellflrame. The implied threat is asking the question of, what will gen 10 be able to do? So in two different ways Quirks can change both in the course of a person's life and additionally society as a whole is also seeing that Quirks are growing, potentially to levels that the individuals will not be able to control.

There's been a bit of a running theme in most shonen power systems that I've noticed and it's that there's always been a trinity of categories that classify abilities in each series. Naruto has Genjutsu, Taijutsu and Ninjutsu. One Piece has Paramecia, Logia and Zoan type Devil Fruits and Observation, Armament and Conqurer's Haki. My Hero Academia has Transformation, Emitter and Mutation types Quirks. JoJo had Ability, Form and Special types Stands and so on.

I think that quirks are a hard magic system. I don’t think your definition is too far off I think you might have just applied it to the wrong aspect of magic systems. Quirks and nen are similar and hard because each ability has specific uses rules and limitations while the limitations of the system itself is kind of vague. Like what can be a quirk or a nen ability is pretty vague but the abilities themselves are very well defined.

I think you could make an entire essay of it's own about the literary theme/ideology of quirks and how it compares to the show. "Not all men are created equal" are some of Deku's first lines in the series, and it reflects both quirks and the philosophy of the show. Not everyone has the same biology, loses weight and gains muscle at the same weight, some of us are even disabled. That can be really disheartening, but the point is that it doesn't matter. Anybody can do anything.

Not sure if you have seen it or not but Hello Future Me has a couple videos going fairly deep into this topic of hard and soft power/magic systems. And I'm going to be blunt here. I feel he did a better job in terms of the descriptionand implementation of hard vs soft powers. Like in a show such as Hero Aca, where the quirk is LITERALLY a trait, how would their system be a soft one? It has become basically a science in terms of their world. Testing limits, determine the likelihood of having one. If you can breed people for quirks, as was done as shown in Shotou. (I probably spelled his name wrong) I'd call that a hard and fast rule. The only soft portion being the possibilities of said quirks. But that's no different than HxH. Emitting chains, channeling lighting, super strength, transforming bodies. (Which leads me to a side note of how powers and techniques developing from personality has POTENTIALLY greater depth than someone's specific powers leading to a personality.)A quirk cannot change aside from the instance and interaction with One for All. While in other shows with the powers as a result of training allows for potentially deeper development as its a sign of their grows from the basics to specialized techniques into signature moves. Compared to MHA which again, their quirk already belongs to them. They can do things specialized things with their quirks. But I feel that if everyone is given the same base tools and then goes out to thousands of different potential paths it's more meaningful. I'm probably going to add more to this later down the line.....

The reason I like fight scenes in MHA more than in Jojo (sorry, those are the only two animes I’ve seen) is because in Jojo, some character is always like “but you didn’t notice that I secretly…” and they explain this intricate plan that would be nearly impossible to execute or even imagine, and I’m just left like ???? I like MHA fights because the best scenes, take Midoriya vs Todoroki, and Deku vs Kacchan part 2, it’s just one guy shooting glaciers and another guy flicking them back, then one guy shooting explosions at the other guy, who kicks him back. The fights are relatively simple physically, but they are made interesting by the complex and intriguing emotions felt by the characters in the fight.

i honestly think these flaws work for the story. for example about the one about using a homogenous playing field. and everyone has to basically work by their quirk's own limitations. It drives home the main plot of BNHA: *Not All Men Are Created Equal.* of course it makes it harder for fights, but it works becsuse the fights aren't the main priority of the show. the main priority of the show is about developing characters and seeing how those characters deal with their lives as heroes.

It's weird that first you say that a quirk manifests between birth and turning 4, but call it an 'inconsistency' when present mic has his quirk from birth? Also, not every character *has* to be equal. The power system isn't flawed because it's realistic and doesn't really harm the story either. Personally I feel like having so many stories that have powersystems based on one core energy has really influenced peoples perception of powersystems but not in a good way. There doesn't need to be a unifying supernatural power to everything to have powers interact with each other. It's about the fact that you are given something, and you gotta do the best and smartest things with it. As I said having shows where powers draw from one thing/energy have truly skewed peoples perception of power systems that do not follow that. Just a side note though, there is a 'underlying quirk power' (not the same as naruto or sumn) but it's the quirk factor, the gene responsible for quirks that is inherently the same to the extent that one quirk can cancel them all. I get that you needed cons for your video but I just think those aren't real cons since you yourself contradict yourself about saying so

Well I would argue that in hunter x hunter there still is a vagueness to nen. For example the specialist category of nen is just any ability that doesn't fit into the other ones, plus Killua has his sister who can somehow break most of the rules of nen and grant wishes due to a strange entity. Now to me the nen system is what a system discovered by humans would probably be like, the person who discovered probably made all the categories, but then realized some abilities don't fit into any category and made specialist. This can be seen in other aspects of the human body such as bones. The types of bones we have are something like Long, Short, Flat, Sutural, Sesamoid and Irregular. Notice how every bone category despite being vague is pretty well defined until you get to the last type of bone in which scientist kind of just shove anything that doesn't fit into the previous categories under.

BL4ZE IT actually your incorrect. What you are thinking of is SPECIFICALLY Kurapika’s specialist ability emporer time. Other Specialist like Chrollo and Neon were stuck with their nen ability and haven’t done much else unless it centers around that ability. So for example all the nen abilities we have seen Chrollo use center around bandits secret ins some way. Chrollo is a special case though because he COPIES other abilities unlike Kurapika who pretty much had to invent his techniques and rely on emporer time to boost them. For example bandits secret is a specialist technique not conjuration. Plus it’s possible for other nen categories to gain techniques that fall under the specialist category, BUT this extremely rare and is most likely to happen with a manipulator or conjured at a measly one percent. While it’s possible for a specialist to use a nen ability that falls under another category so can LITERALLY every other nen category. There’s nothing stopping an enhancer from using a manipulation ability other than the fact that the user actually wants to be better in a fight and doing so would be more of hindrance, but there are characters like Netero and Bisky who can use other nen categories despite not falling under them extremely well so this isn’t and end all be all it is theoretically possible to be an enhancer with an insane manipulation ability but it’s either unlikely or better off used in combination with another category. But, unlike the other nen categories we have never gotten an exact percentage of how we’ll specialist can use other categories. This is probably because they are you know specialist so it’s a case by case based. Also if what you said was true specialist techniques such as Bandits Secret, Doctor Blythe and Neon’s ability would not fall under specialist because like you said they would just be using some other category. So things like Dr Blyther would be idk conjuration or something. We see when Kurapika uses his chains the chains themselves all fall under their respective categories ie enhancer, conjures etc. but the actual emporer time ability itself is specialist. My point is Specialist abilities can literally be anything they are not a specific ability like emporer time.

1. Be more consistent. Seriously, Horikoshi is terrible at this. Midoria blasts off tons and tons of ice instantly with a flick of his finger, but a full blown punch doesn't do shit? IN THE SAME FIGHT?! Stain can somehow survive 5% One for All punch to the face? Midoria and Todoroki, who have some of the most OP quirks out there needs to team up to take down Stain, who's mostly just human? Bakugou can take direct kick from All Might, gets blown up, breaks concrete, and is just fine?(yeah, I know AM was holding back, but he still kicked him so hard he flew off and went through a building. How was he just ok after that?!) 2. More creative fights. This is another thing where Horikoshi fails. Most fights ends with 'Who can punch/blast the hardest?'. Like, here is All for One, having acquired dozens and dozens of versatile quirks, and he fights All MIght with just brute force? 3. Stop writing set-pieces just to fit your narrative, they need to make sense too. How Midoria comes out on top in the first stage of Sports Festival, and how Bakugou wins the second stage is downright nonsensical. 4. No need to be melodramatic every single time. Yeah, it's the bread and butter of MHA, but when every single fight is overdramatic as hell, it starts loosing all meaning. Fights need to stand on their own too.

Neil Solanki I know I’m late but 1. Deku held back to 5% when he punched Todoroki (he specifically talks about the egg in the microwave before that), MHA characters are all superhuman to some degree this is consistent in the series for example: Kirishima can react to a gunshot, Uraraka and Tokoyami can tank explosions, Bakugou and Todoroki can take 5% punches that can break metal so Stain who has trained for a very long time being superhuman makes sense. 2. All For One fought like that because it’s implied he used a lot of weird and hax abilities before and so is doing something different now so All Might can’t counter like he did before. It’s also so he can utterly crush All Might with brute force (AM’s bread and butter) to crush everyone’s hopes and plunge them into despair. 3. Midoriya literally blew himself, Bakugou and Todoroki up to win it makes sense, Bakugou won the 1v1 battles because Todoroki gave up because he was conflicted on whether he was doing the right thing by using his flames (it would’ve made less sense if he instantly got over all his issues then and there) 4. Not very fight is melodramatic. The big ones are since they often mean a lot to the characters involved
