this all makes sense, when you are an individual living by yourself. but when u have a family ( maybe a kid-toddler) and other family affairs, then life becomes much more chaotic. the case u presented about walk the dog, work, walk the dog -- this feels too much of luxury when u have lot of chaos in your life( which to some extent not in your control). Can you shade some light if you have some thoughts on this.?

I don't know if anyone will read this but I'd like to share a part of my story. I was 21, just joined a medical school. That year was my first year. So I was lagging behind by quite a large margin when compared to a most of my colleagues, who generally entered one at the age of 18 here. I was extremely addicted to a few things, it took me three years to come clean. I cleared the entrance exam, scored pretty good, but failed to get a subsidized seat. So I entered an expensive college. Nearly costing me $100k for 5.5 years of school. It was so depressing. I had technically brought my life on track, but I lived in guilt that my parents suffered so much because of me. I tried swinging my arms around to try to earn a few bucks to elevate a bit of pressure off of them. The problem is, the unemployment rate here is so high that trying to get a part time is almost impossible. I started writing stories. I earned a bit through it, just enough to get by in that month. But it all worked out in the end. I'll graduate as an ophthalmologist in a year. I'll be 29 by then. I'm earning quite decent right now. So I would say life has turned out okay. I was a bit late at a lot of things. But it'll turn out fine. All the best to everyone who's struggling with things. It'll all be okay.

"A therapist focuses on the past" is a very inaccurate description of what therapy is. It's very much focused on the present, which sometimes includes people being stuck with their relationship to the past and current anxieties about the future. It's very important not to parrot this misconception that therapy is just people sitting around and rehashing their childhood because these stereotypes prevent people, who very much need therapy, from seeking it.
@teresasparks8348

Yeah from a generally intelligent and kind person this is a very surprising and huge mistake. And said SO casually, as though it is truth. He has no doubt that he is correct, and yet he has fundamentally misunderstood what therapy is.

Also came to say this, I heard what Ali said and did a double take! Hope no one takes this the wrong way, but the main difference between a coach and a therapist is that therapists actually need an education to call themselves that - a degree and a valid license. Anyone can call themselves a coach. No offense.

Mm depends on the therapist. It's true that you need a degree and license to call yourself a therapist but that's not the same as education I've been to multiple therapists at different times in my life and it was never helpful - I would always go and tell said therapist about what was wrong in my life, hoping for strategies on how to fix it (which I feel like is a pretty reasonable request considering this is a paid for "service")? And instead I got "that sounds really hard" like yeah it is but it could not be if you would help me out here Therapy in theory can be quite helpful Therapy in practice is significantly less so because there's so many different ways to practice it - including what he cited

I love how you’ve used the word “nudge.” It provides opportunities to push you in the right direction while leaving room for flexibility & forgiveness and build momentum to keep making that next step. Hard lines on habits can bring up so much shame of failure sometimes but a constant nudge in the right direction seems a lot healthier. Removing shame like you say later in the video sets yourself up for success so much more. Nudges can be used positively too when used to remove friction. Using your Infinite Content Engine provides me an easy nudge to always be thinking through ideas for my channel. Putting a non-fiction book I’m reading always next to my computer helps me read a chapter before I start work. Always having Skyr yogurt and Apples in my fridge nudge me in the direction of always choosing a healthier snack choice. All these nudges in either direction have helped me build so much momentum but I’ve never thought about it in that framework before. Thanks for this video! It gave me a lot to think about.

I have a dog, my very first one, and yes, it's almost a full-time job. However, over the last year, she has given me hope and motivation to improve myself. I love our morning walks in the park: when I see her happy, I’m happy too, and it’s great to start my day knowing I’ve done something to make her feel that way. :) I REALLY liked your graphic about the baseline we consider a good life and how to move above that line and, as a persone who still struggle with depression, I totally agree on what you said, good job!

So true on the small things. I take pride in something small like making my bed every day, knowing that at the end of the day I get to finish my day getting into a neatly made bed, but in taking pride in that one small action it normally leads to doing another small thing and another small thing which compounds throughout the day. Even on my worst days I can still make my bed every morning.

Just because a lot of people mindlessly follow ambition (including me btw) - it doesn't mean it's actually right for you (something I just realized). And when people finally achieve what they want what happens? They feel a short term buzz then start wanting again. We're never satisfied! Jordan Peterson says, "Don't compare yourself to anyone else, compare yourself to you yesterday!" I thought this was a really interesting re-orientation. But you can just focus on trying to find peace and joy in your life Dat to day. I wish you quality of life!

Wow this really resonated with me, especially differentiating between the X and Y advice. I’ve been way too focused on the huge life changes stuff (like wanting a fresh start in another country and/or job) and getting so overwhelmed that I shutdown and become paralysed with indecision. When really, I’m below baseline right now and need to build momentum with small things over time. In the past I have dived head first into big changes/moves and it’s been great, but thinking about doing that now feels way too scary and overwhelming- I needed to hear that that’s not always the best way to tackle things, there are other options. Thanks Ali, this is really helpful❤

Love listening to you Ali and your awesome capacity to structure and define and your journey and podcast are so brilliant ….. …. in this episode I appreciated you clearly saying you are not a therapist and I heard a vibe of slightly dismissing therapy as being just about the past - good therapy is so much more - embodiment, inhabiting more of who we are, digesting undigested pain from the past in the present, deep listening, learning how to relate to oneself with kindness rather than criticism to name a few things. 😊

I agree, that's what therapy ( like cognitive behavioral therapy ) does. I was surprised and worried by the statement he made because he has such a huge platform. And as he says in this video peolpe contact him for advice. Hopefully they will do their research about the benefit of therapy and take his opinion about it with a grain of salt. Aside from that, his video is good, but what he said about therapy stuck with me.

I don't think that a therapist only works on someone's past. They also work on a person's future. And the thing you explained in the "Ideal Day" segment is also done by a therapist, especially when people have dysfunctional thinking patterns. I love your videos and have followed you for a long time, but I thought I'll clarify this as a psychology researcher that your videos mostly cater to the psychologically "normal". People with dysfunctional thinking and behaviour won't understand these concepts so easily. That's where a therapist comes in. I hope you understand :)

Meticulous planning, structuring, and creating expectations on yourself is not a cure but a disease - total freedom lies in giving yourself space, and freedom, and to trust in yourself being able to make the best of it - sometimes you have bad days, sometimes you have good days. I thought I was below baseline because I felt useless. After watching this video, I realized that I am at the baseline i.e. 'My life is reasonably good' because I am doing most of the things I would want to get done in my ideal day which is exercising, eating healthy, taking care of the house, spending quality time with my partner, and studying. As a single mom of 2 dogs, it was nice to see the week/ideal week of another single dog mom haha It does take time in the schedule but it's not that bad. Just see it as opportunities for extra steps/walk for yourself to stay active. I also like that I feel 100% obliged to go walk them, even if I really don't feel like it (eg when you're in a more depressed moment). The fact that you HAVE to take them out is a blessing. I remember having a bad phase and just going outside walking them was making me feel better. But I know people in a bad phase who does not have a dog would just stay inside and it won't be as beneficial.

I had to study and work 10 years to gain my qualifications for my job. I felt behind in my personal life when I did. Truth is everyone feels like they are behind in one aspect or another by comparing with others, our elders, neighbours etc. Truth is be happy with what you do have and live in the moment. Just know someone out there has it worst off than you. Be grateful for what you do have even if you do go through hard times. Know you are not alone. Someone had to go through the same hardships.
