@Smithers322

We have 4 confirmed DLCs, as MoaRider said. That's more than they've done for previous games. As a player of those previous games I will say this: every one of them will be meaty and game changing on several levels. It's just how Triumph has done things in the past. There will be new cultures, tomes, units, (and because of those new units and spells), but also new structures, events, standalone units, races, whole new game systems, biome changes. And with each new DLC, Triumph spends time with bug fixes and balancing. This next year and a half is going to see the game change in major ways. And that's all vanilla, developer changes. The mod community is gonna go nuts as well.

@MDC so I've been playing it, and I'm only a few hours in, but it has *at least* as many systems as Civ if not more. Sure you don't have to move citezens around tiles or build improvements, but there are separate currencies for unit production and upkeep is in 3 different currencies. The second tech tree uses 6+1 pseudo currencies plus the currency used to unlock things. That's not even getting into the 6 different kinds of spells or the tactical combat where the units have AP and different abilities. I'm not saying it won't work fine on consoles, but it being released there really isn't a tool to measure complexity.

I felt Planetfall was OK. It has 3 DLC, but none of them were "neccessary" to play the game. They added more races, secret tech, some stuff like adventure sites, new campaigns. More or less in style of AoW 3, not Paradox "let's gut half of mechanics from the game and introduce them in DLC"-style. But Paradox helped a lot with marketing, especially since theirplayer bases are similiar, lot of Stellaris players were interested in Planetfall, etc. They organised these mini-promotions with youtubers too, I think.

Grew up playing AoW 1. was horrible at it but I was enchanted by the games style and fantasy. Then we got AoW2: Shadow Magic. I spent MANY afternoons in my childhood, sometimes even entire days playing AoW2. Then I found modding for AoW2 and played it through highschool. Then AoW3 came out, it felt like too much of a departure from what I loved, but I still spent probably 400 hours in it. Now THIS comes out, and it's EVERYTHING I could ever want in an AoW or 4x strategy RPG (its more than that but that's what I want) I just CANNOT wait to play this. And yeah, this games modding support will do it wonders for longevity. I'm very excited. This seems like Triumph Studio's true vision of what they wanted Age of Wonders to be. After the expansions and love and care patches/updates over time, I think this will be GOAT for me. Unless they make a 5th and beat this one too.

There I went just to lose most of my army to a few "very low risk" encounters. No matter what I do, on their turn the enemy would focus their fire on one of my units and reliably destroy it. Then in my turn I can do the same and destroy one of their units. Whoever has more units wins, but loses as many units as the enemy had. I fail to see the point.

Don't you find it uncomfortable and very noticeable when playing the game? Going from AoW3 to Planetfall felt like a bit of a disappointment because while Planetfall's economy system was more polished, it just didn't have the same high degree of unit variety and strategic depth in combat as AoW3. I walked away from Planetfall thinking to myself "man if they make a game with Planetfall's economy system and AoW3's unit roster and customization options you'd have like...the perfect game. And they not only did that, but also EXPANDED that customization. God I'm so excited for this game

I like it so far, only problem is that if you dont have a manual save then you might lose your game. Youll have a game with only auto and quick saves and itll crash no matter what you do if you exit and try to load it up. Hope they fix it.

I have many issues with the game. However it is a paradox game so I'm sure that most of the things will improve over time. It is even the best vanilla version of a paradox game I've played so far. And I've played over a thousand hours on EUIV and Stellaris and more than 100 hours on several of their other games. So I'm pretty sure that I will enjoy the game for many years to come.

Ah man. I just look at the Expansion Pass DLC titles. And none of them sound like they would include any Kirko like Insect race to play as. Bummer.

As some one whose tried for years to get into Age of Wonders 3, but found the game wholly unapproachable (I've probably started and given up on 8 different attempts now), how does Age of Wonders 4 compare to AoW3 in approcahabilty? I LOVE 3x games, Terraformers, Slipways, etc. but just can't ever seem to break into the 4x genre, too much analysis paralysis, too many choices I don't understand, and too many decisions for which a mistake in the first 30 minutes when I don't understand what I'm doing will haunt me on hour 20. Once I start to get comfortable with 3x games they're a blast even if they're complex, but its that need for short, limited decision making/things to consider, initial levels that allow me to experiment and make mistakes with out fear of paying for it later because later I'll be starting a new map and better understand what I'm doing, rather then still being in this one.

As for AoW3, just chill and play the campaigns to ease into it and get a sense of the world and story, before taking on custom maps and random maps. Or do it the other way around, play some small random map and do all the her building mistakes there before heading into the campaigns. Pro-tip, take passive hero abilites over abilities that need to be activated, because there's a cap on how many abilities and item options you can have in combat. My main gripe with AoW4 is the lack of campaign, for me it means less immersion.

Runs great on Steam deck :) What makes this game so addictive that every ones game is different. And as you fail or get defeated your learn from your mistakes. This is not a game where you need to win to enjoy the ride. must play.....

One thing, that so far, every review skipps, for some odd reason, is: HOW does this compare to AoW3? No one was mentioned, that this uses regions, as Planetfall, which is a huge difference and something that might put some people off like me. Is there a scenarion choice, or are all maps generated? Because so far, generated maps have been looking super weird and ugly, and that also seems to apply here, from what I have been seeing. And in the same vein: is there a scenario editor? Also: as being published by Paradox, everyone should remember Imperator Rome. I don't count on them adding for fixing stuff if this doesn't sell enough. Most games published by them have been a bug-fest, not speaking of new DLC or patches causing more issues.

I think a better comparison for combat is Advanced wars. Though that's a deeper cut.
