Hi Lara I'm new to all this saving and frugal living. In 2020 I managed to pay off my credit cards now im hoping to finish paying for my car by March this year. I've never thought about investing money in stocks and shares. I've no idea what to do here any advice to get me started will be great?

@Lalate Beautifully said, I tell my folks these words everyday. It's good to save money but most people don't understand the market moves and tend to be misled in facts like this and always depend on money in the bank.

Very well presented - clear and carefully explained! I follow another British KZitemr who unfortunately posted a video today mentioning that her next video will be about cryptocurrency investing and how great it had been - the last TWO months - and encouraging viewers to watch to learn how they, too, can afford to buy their next luxury handbag. I told her it is irresponsible to suggest that her experience is a normal experience. Crypto is unregulated, highly volatile, tied to trafficking and other crimes and has a very short performance history vs. traditional investing like you describe here. It is very disappointing how many KZitemrs are encouraging young and neophyte investors to try something so risky when, as you point out, they could put that same amount of money into traditional markets and watch it grow slowly and compound. But we’re a society that wants immediate returns and something for nothing.

Some great points you spoke about here - as investing & personal finance is my passion project too, completely agree with investing in the stock market BUT also yourself & your own business too if you can. The goal is not to simply stack up as much money as you can but to live a life that has balance and joy - and loved that you said consistency is key too. Time IN the market rather than TIMING the market is key for investments in the stock market. Here's to a great 2021 ahead for you!

I’m sure you’d be more successful if you took all the money you wanted to invest and put it into your vanguard account, forget about trading 212 etc. Even Warren Buffett doesn’t pick individual shares to invest in, ETF’s are the way to go.

Definitely good advice not to panic and pull out. My vanguard ISA dropped to - 40% in March/April. It’s now up to 30.45% which is the highest it has been since I opened my account in august 2019. I’m in my 30s, as I get older I will transfer to lower risk investments, as I will use it as part of my retirement

@@LaraJoannaJarvis no that was in the US but interest rates along the western world generally follow the same trend. When banks are paying high rates, they are also charging high rates. Housing market rates follow suit. When rates are hig, house prices experience slower growth. When rates are low, housing prices increase. I believe in the EU they have experimented with negative interest rates and the results have not been good. Because they really do not end up,paying people to borrow because they charge higher fees. But it really hurts savers.

Great video, thank you! I started this year too, during the first lockdown. I started with an invest account on 212 but have moved it into an isa after learning about capital gains tax and having to do tax returns when it’s not protected in an isa! I pay into Vanguard accounts for our children but would love to open one for myself at some point too, although currently our spare money is being thrown at our mortgage, we’re overpaying by 100% every month to chip away at it before we move. I love that 212 is on my phone so I can always check on it, this also makes it hard not to put more money into it all the time though!

What you said is partially true. Money could grow if we were not in a zero rate interest world. Right now a savings account is basically just a holding tank. In the 70s and 80s, interest rates were much higher and banks were paying 8-12 percent interest on savings account. Of course they were paying 12-15% on mortgages. Banks will never pay for as high as stock investments but it is a balance of risk. Low risk, low return. High risks and high return. One other thing is that if we reach a negative interest rate policy, then it will actually cost you money to leave it in a bank. Bad situation. Several EU countries are there already.
@LaraJoannaJarvis

Yes, you’re totally right! It feels like it’s been so long that we’ve been getting such low interest rates in the bank it didn’t seem relevant when talking about putting money in the bank at the moment. Yes, shocking to think your money will soon lose money in the bank, although of course with inflation it already is over time! C

I know the market is up insanely. I wonder when it will crash again. 8 have been investing for 25 years now and have seen a lot of ups and downs in the market. I do dollar cost averaging and it has served me well. I love passive investments. It will put my kids through college, pay for my retirement and leave a legacy for my kids and grandkids

I want to know what dollar cost averaging and passive investment mean. Thank you
@princesskaitlinhazelwood4703
3 жыл бұрын
Dollar cost averaging is investing the same dollar amount regardless of the current performance of the investment. For example of every month you bought $50 worth of shares for a certain mutual fund X. So one month the price per share may be $2. So if you invested $50, you could buy 25 shares. Say another month the share price of X mutual fund is $4 share. Then you can only buy 12.5 share. But then there is a market crash in another month and the share price goes down to $1 share. Then your same $50 investment, now buys 50 shares. You are purchasing more shares when stock prices decline but gain from the overall long ga,e that stock prices in general gain over time. Over a long period of time, say 30 years, the stock market return 7% per year. So by dollar cost averaging you gain on each individual share 7% per year. It is about not timing the market. Essentially that is what Lara does as well. She just did not use the term
@princesskaitlinhazelwood4703
3 жыл бұрын
Ok your second question was about passive investment. That means invest,ent that does not require work to earn a profit. Stocks, bonds, and other financial products because you don’t actively work to gain profit or make money. Your money is made by holding the stock and the share price increasing over time. Active investment is the opposite. Think if it as your job or rental income. If you work for living you actively work to are money. If your a land,ore, you are still working to manage accounts, fix repairs , find tenants etc. this would be an active investment. Does that make sense?
