I'm shocked to hear how you started as a pre-pharm major in your freshman year because that is where I am this year and now I'm starting to feel like it isn't right for me and now thinking of switching to Psychology online for uofa but not sure :(

I totally know that feeling. The best advice I can give is to trust your gut instinct! If you feel like it may not be a good fit, your feelings are probably right. Although I will say that freshman year tends to be a bit rough no matter what major you are in. Another helpful tool is talking with professionals who are already in both fields! I found that incredibly helpful, asking them about their satisfaction in the job, likes and dislikes, if they would do anything differently, etc. I've heard really positive things about the online Psychology program as well. Best of luck!!

Hi Darrian! I am a perspective student trying to apply for a masters degree in the field of clinical mental health counseling. I was wondering to what degree does extracurriculars and leadership matters in the process of admission? I know that internship and research opportunities in the related field are really crucial, but what about clubs or volunteer activities? I'd appreciate any kind of advice and thank you in advance!

Arielle Yang Hi Arielle! To be honest, anything helps. Submitting a current resume of yours is part of the application for many programs, so you can list any extracurriculars on that. Leadership experience can be especially beneficial to show that you would be capable of leading something like group counseling in the future, for example. However, I'd say it's not necessarily a requirement. If you have psych-related work, internship, and/or research assistant experience, not having been in any clubs throughout undergrad won't typically ruin your chances of admission. But it can also be a nice addition to your application regardless! For example, if you're involved in a club that helps fight the stigma surrounding mental health struggles or something like that, that can of course be related to psych and be viewed favorably by the admissions team/make you stand out in comparison to those who might not have that experience. Good luck with applying!!
