First off thank you, a real review. The shop I am dealing with on the west coast says they carefully inspect and set up their Journey guitars before letting them go. Having said that the minor imperfections, if that's all I have to deal with, shant bother me in the least. it looks like a perfect guitar to take from Canada to Peru! Thanks again!

Thank you , this is really the best review . I've been thinking of buying this for a long time, now that I know there are some manufacturing issue , I think I will reconsider it. Thank you.

You are welcome. If you are somewhere where you can demo it, I'd say it's still worth taking a look at, but there's no denying the manufacturing flaws.

I bought one, the nylon version. I have to say I don't like it, particularly the neck. It's a weird weird shape. I use it to strum flamenco stuff because its carbon fibre and can take the damage. So I have use for it. But my recommendation is to stay away.

Hey, thanks for the review, which closely matches my experience except that nothing was actually broken. I bought my OF660M directly back in 2017 and had it shipped to Germany; love a lot of the features, but the build quality certainly leaves a lot to be desired. One of the piezo elements had come loose in shipping and it took me awhile to realize that I glued it back in the wrong spot (my bad there, fixed that); the paint quality on the neck is horrible (same as yours at 7:50) and when I look from playing position into the soundhole (7:05) I couldn't believe how sloppy it looks! That said, the sound is certainly superior to the Baby Taylor (my 1st travel guitar) and basically all other travel guitars I have owned or played, and the comfort of not having to worry about temperature or humidity meant it stayed. Now I'm looking for a better pickup system (which brought me here)- the passive one is actually pretty good and does much of what I would even expect from an internal mic, but that makes it a bit indirect. The search goes on.... thanks again for your video!

Dave your compromise with this $1800 guitar is a bit too forgiving. You bought quality and you should expect it, so should Journey (Dave Brawner). I was just thinking of buying one of these, but not if their quality standards are less than stellar, regardless of manufacturer in China or US. Journey should have internal quality checks that don't permit these obvious flaws to get to the new owner. It tarnishes their reputation and it places the burden on the customer. If I buy one of these, I will require that they do a proper quality inspection prior to shipping to me. Just ashamed that Journey didn't discount and fix the issues you encountered. I would never permit quality to be an issue in my profession and Journey should have higher standards without any excuses. Just my opinion.

Agreed whole heartedly. I don't associate their brand with quality after my experience, unfortunately. To me they're the "least bad" option for this mind of product. Ya, I can't imagine being comfortable letting products go out the door to customers like their either, but I guess different business owners have different standards.

@@CaptainJackDaniels I own the Journey and a Baby Taylor , and I have played the Klos travel guitar next to them. The Journey sounds far better than the Taylor or Klos, but is much heavier. I am working on making my Journey lighter. I left it behind on my current trip simply because of the weight.

Some of the problems might be better if they QC the instrument before they sent them out such detailing the nut and the string guard. If that string guard is going to be a replacement problem maybe they should get a number of extras and sell it as a kit when they sell the guitar. I would think with a skilled craftsman one could made to replace it. So take as bunch of pictures of it in proper health so that if it breaks they can work off those pictures if necessary. Just suggestions from a guy raised a horseman that had to jury rig all the time. Thanks for the review.

This video deserves much more attention. I've almost bought this guitar for myself and only this video stopped me. Will do it only if I'll be able to try it out at an offline store. Anyway, how is your guitar almost three years after posting the video? Have you tried any other carbon fibre guitars? I really like the idea of having a guitar that I can take anywhere with me, but it's quality is also very important

Thanks Dmytro, I'm glad it helped. It's strange to me that, at the time of writing this, about 7% of viewers dislike this video... it's just information, so I don't know what people could dislike so much. Anyway, I have indeed tried a few other carbon fibre guitars, and generally, the full-sized guitars always sound better. As far as small "travel size" guitars go, I think this one still sounds the best. Three years later with this guitar, it's still my "go-to" guitar for any travel situation, especially if I think I'm going into an environment that would be challenging for my other guitars. For instance, if camping, I know the guitar might get bumped around a bit, and if I'm playing the guitar by a camp fire, it could get dried out. For these applications, this guitar is great! The pick-up still sounds pretty bad, but honestly I haven't performed anywhere with this guitar plugged in, so it hasn't really been an issue. Overall quality-wise, the gutiar is in the exact same condition as the day I got it, so reliability is very good. Much of the time, this guitar lives in the back of my car so I've always got one with me, and it's perfect for that. These COVID days, since I'm not really flying anywhere, I'd likely go with a full-sized guitar that doesn't pack down so small but sounds better, but oh well.

@@davehawley5087 thanks for such a fast and informative answer, I really appreciate it. Let's hope that this guitar will be available somewhere in offline shop in Europe. I already got used to higher price that we have to pay for it, but poor quality control is a deal breaker

Good video Dave. Have you looked at Klos guitars, if so what do you think of them? They are made in Utah. I’m considering the Klos travel guitar and the OF660

Did you end up deciding on Klos or Journey? I’m considering these two as well especially now that Klos offers a full carbon model (as opposed to the hybrid model having wood neck and bridge). So I’m wondering what your thoughts are and what your expletive has been

At those prices it should be perfect. A nice looking and sounding guitar but at over 1100 euros, made in China and bad QC I dont think I´ll be touching them anytime soon. I can get a decent, American made Martin for that price.

Dave - with regard to the Nut fitment on the replacement OF660M that you showed - from the inset picture of the Nut that you showed on the KZitem video, it looks to me like the Nut was fitted UPSIDE DOWN - i.e. the flat part should face out towards the strings and the curved part should fit into the matching curve part of the neck. Does that make sense? I'm thinking of ordering one as I suffered from terrible dry air damage to a Collings D2H I bought in 2000, a Fender 12 string I've had for 45 years and a Suzuki 6 string I've had for about 40 years during a 7-year work assignment in upstate New York. Thankfully, I retired a couple of years ago and moved back to Austin, TX. Nonetheless, I want to avoid any future potential damage from environmental changes, so will be happy to pay the purchase price of a Journet guitar to have "peace of mind" going forward. Anyway, I hope I am right about the Nut on your Journey! Good luck with that!

Thanks for that Dave - I've been doing a lot of web research after your suggestion to read more and have absolutely fallen in love with Emerald guitars! Not sure whether to order an X30 or an X10 with Level 3 pickups, since I found some awesome KZitem reviews of an X10 plus Roland GR55 synth, so I'm going to be forking out quite a bit of cash!

Hi Dave, I was wondering if you could possibly take a look at a song I am trying to learn. I have searched high and low on the internet for the tab and watched the live performances of the band but have only got so far. I was hoping someone with a more experienced musical ear could fill in the blanks for the chords. The song is "Wanting" by Oh Pep! I wouldn't expect a video but maybe just the chord progression. Capo on the fourth.
