You could save even more weight with swapping to a rackless luggage system like the Enduristan blizzard or similar. They are also closer to the bike and dont flopp around like the ones on racks. And decating it would also save a bit more.

As a very long term user of LiFePO4 batteries on Motos (over 8 years on my SkyRich Lithium battery) I can thoroughly recommend them. Lots of power. The only problem I've encountered is the cold. Once the temperature is below 3°C starting becomes problematic. The colder it gets, the more problematic it becomes. Minus 5°C and below is a real b#tch. The fix is to turn on the high beam headlight and let the Moto stand for about 2 - 5 minutes (it won't hurt the battery, honest), the colder it is the longer you leave it as the battery has to warm up. Then, try to start the bike (don't over crank it). It may take two or three goes to start. Mine lives in an unheated garage, so most of the time not problem but, parked up outside for the day in winter can be a problem.

I know for purpose video, it is ok, but what you are doing there, is not doing much at all. Taking parts off and cuting 5kg from the bike, doesnt mean much. Imporve your offroad skills, then the weight wont be a problem. Or, get a lighter bike and your problem is solved. Good luck
@AndyManCam
Жыл бұрын
5kg was just what was in the IKEA bag. In total it was over 12kg of weight saving. I can improve my off-road skills until the cows come home, but I’m still going to have to pick up the bike at some point. And 12kg less than stock is definitely enough to notice. Obviously a lighter bike will solve the weight issue, but sadly I’m 6‘4“ and 100kg and I live thousands of miles from the good roads, so I need the comfort and mile munching that only this size of machine can give me.
@Traulus83

@@AndyManCam I was refering only to those. Those you took off but wont help you at anuthing. Cases, exhasut, battery, yes that's an improvement, but platsics and brackets.....wont help you much being taken off. Was a nice video to watch thou, never taught putting a super heavy bike in tough conditions just because of versatility
@AndyManCam
Жыл бұрын
@Traulus83 I’m glad you found the video nice, but i don’t think you fully understand the concept of it. I think you’re being too black and white here. Any weight that is not adding to the function of the bike, that can be removed without performance cost, it’s helping in the right direction. The 5kg in the IKEA bag is ONLY small pieces of plastic and metal that are not needed, and they very quickly added up to a noticeable weight. With your attitude of ‚don’t worry about it, just improve your skills‘ you’ve very quickly got yourself a fully laden 275kg beast that you now need to haul up out of the dirt. Plus i think you’re missing the point somewhat. If my luggage weighs 5kg, but i can balance that weight out so that i can have the luggage and no extra weight on the bike, then that too is a glorious victory. Ultimately, every single little bit helps. And it doesn’t stop with the bolt ons. My panniers were half empty for my trip because anything that didn’t serve a purpose or wasn’t vital to the trip, i left behind. And i can tell you that after having picked up this bike before i did all of this work, and having picked it up (several times) after, Every single piece that i removed helped me a lot.

Not necessarily trying to make anybody look like a +w@+ but IMHO the last thing the BMW GS needs is more cc‘s and more power. Nobody needs more than 100bhp if they’re planning to take the bike off tarmac. It’s all about making people think they’re getting more so that they dig into their pockets and replace the already oversized, overspecced and overengineered bike with one that has even more bells and whistles (and useless, cross-platform pieces of plastic that ultimately could have kept the weight AND the cost of the bike down by just being left on the drawing room floor!) so they feel like they’re winning. Yamaha‘s T7 and Ducati‘s Desert X are the only two bikes recently that make me feel like they ‚get it‘. Now electric SUVs….
