The story of the Two Alicorn Sisters is for certain the saddest in all the MLP: FIM. Celestia loved her sister tremendously, but she couldn't prevent Luna's jealousy from turning her into Nightmare Moon and was forced to banish her to the moon in order to protect their kingdom. Despite it's not exactly how it happens in the series, this song and video is the perfect illustration of their story. And in fact the animation is really good. I delve a little bit into MLP a couple years ago, and one very important thing of the lore, is that Celestia (the one who sang in Lullaby for a Princess), after banishing her younger sister (Luna) to the moon, was tasked with raising both the Sun and Moon every night for 1,000 years. That means in the series’ canon, every day and every night, for 1,000 years, Celestia was confronted with a cold reminder that she herself sent her sister away, and it’s a spell that can’t be undone until that time limit passes, every time she’d raise or lower the moon and see her sister’s silhouette…The animation even takes this a bit further, because Celestia’s mane was only pink at first, but after banishing Luna, her mane is multicolored, which is another painful reminder every time she looks in a reflective surface, that she did this to her sister. Luna’s duties became her burdens, and while not canon, a song like this could give us a glimpse at the guilt Celestia would feel for doing this. The song’s lyrics are self-reassurance that THIS was the right choice and all that could be done, and honestly if one got into a fight with a sibling that resulted in the latter getting locked up, you could wonder if there was anything you could do to get a different outcome. The vocals are so chilling, and in tandem with the animation, you can tell a lot of love was put into this. Still makes me tear up.

To clarify: *Luna* is the sister in control of the moon (the literal celestial body, yes) and dreams, which she can also manipulate. In her youth she was encapsulated by hatred and jealousy as the majorly agricultural and day-living pony populous spent their time admiring her older sister *Celestia* who is the crowned ruler and controls the beloved day through the sun, and shunning the unwelcoming night. Celestia is too young to comprehend how Luna feels in her shadow, and fails to react to how an evil spirit called "Nightmare Moon" (who needs to be invited into a hosts body like a parasite in order to take over their consciousness) is slowly gaining her vulnerable younger sister's trust. By the time Celestia comes to this realization Luna has already let Nightmare moon in and is no longer truly herself, but a warped consciousness instead. They fight, and because of Nightmare Moon's influence Celestia loses the initial battle. She is seen crashing into a building in which there is a display holding the "Elements of Harmony" crystal artifacts that hold insane levels of energy. Celestia, in distress, accesses their power in order to defeat her sister. (This sudden influx of power even warps the natural state of her body, changing her hair from natural pink-->constantly flowing, almost unaffected by gravity, pastel rainbow). With the help of these artifacts she *seals her sister and the evil spirit within the moon* and it is later clarified that it will take 1000 moons/years for the seal to be broken. Celestia and Luna are alicorns (ponies who have wings and horns) which is considered a royal/powerful class of ponies that are granted immortality or an elongated life span, as well as powers strong enough to move celestial bodies. Therefore, Celestia is left to rule Equestria, the major pony kingdom, alone and shoulders the burden of maintaining the balance between night and day, sun and moon, that she and her sister would've had to. Albeit, it was Celestia's oversight and naiveness that caused this, she had to banish her sister because Luna, warped by the evil within her, would've refused to lower the moon to make way for the sun and willed for the night to last forever. Biology wise (which applies to this fantasy world) this would have caused famine, disease and overall world-wide tragedy. So Celestia did the right thing in regards to her kingdom, but that doesn't erase the guilt. This show was my childhood and it is nice to see it get some more recognition now, too. As much as this was a kids show, the world-building was so good that it got a very creative fandom hooked and many of us may never let it go. This fandom created animations like Lullaby for a Princess and expanded upon an already beautiful narritive so well that it never ceases to amaze those who went into MLP related fan-content expecting a regular kids show :D I agree with a few of the comments that recommended you guys watch *"The Moon Rises"* it is another animation project that shows Luna's perspective before the fight went down. So, in early 2012 Ponyphonic creates and sings the song "The Moon rises". which tells the story of Luna's decent into jealousy and madness due to her sister's popularity over-shadowing hers. Became hugely popular due to his amazing vocals and great lyrics and production. later that year he decides to create a sequel to that, telling the same story, but from Celestia's perspective. he teamed up with Christina Ellis to do the vocals, and they create Lullaby for a princess. it becomes one of the most popular songs in the entire fandom. bit later Warpout decides to create an animated version of Lullaby. takes two to three years to create. it finally does come out and you can see the results. After this animation comes out, Ponyphonic releases a remake of The Moon Rises, this one being an extended version with female vocals by Kristen Calvin. a few years after that DuoCartoonists create an animated version of The Moon Rises using a cover of the extended version done by Elly Monty.

The first episode opens with the main character reading a summary of it in a history book. The song does a pretty good job of explaining the story of the two sisters, but I'll explain in more detail. The Alicorn Sisters Celestia and Luna rule over the kingdom of Equestria and are tasked with raising and setting the sun and moon respectively each day. The sun and moon don't move on their own, they do it manually each day using their magic, which you see Celestia doing in the video. As she presides over the day, Celestia the older sister received all the praise, glory and love from their people. Meanwhile the younger sister of the moon, Luna, only saw how people turned away from her beautiful night, shunning what she has to offer the world by sleeping through it. Over time her hatred and resentment built until she finally reached her breaking point. If the ponies of Equestria would not love her night as they did her sister's day, then the night would reign alone for all eternity. She gave in to the hatred and transformed into Nightmare Moon, attempting to kill her sister and shroud the land in darkness forever. Celestia could not allow this to happen, and with tears in her eyes she used powerful relics called the Elements of Harmony to seal her sister within the moon. From then on, she took over Luna's duty of raising and setting the moon each day. Luna, in the form of Nightmare Moon, was sealed within the moon for 1000 years. The first episode, which is actually 2 episodes, is about her escape from the moon and her second attempt to bring eternal night. The main cast, named the Mane Six, defeat her with the Elements of Harmony and this time they purge the twisted magic that warped her mind so far, freeing Princess Luna to return to her sister and her rightful place at her side.

Nah if they’re reacting to fan works then they need to start to watch the show. Speaking of fan works, there’s so much to go through. From the Anthology series, the PMV’s, the “MLP meets” series, and so much more, it’s a never ending rabbit hole.

For rhe line "with your tired eyes, and my lullabies", i honestly used to think it said " with your tired eyes, and my low goodbyes" but i still like to think thats what dhe said because it brings more impact for me personally.

This beautifully tells the backstory of the show. It's totally fan-made, which tells you how much we fans love the show. I gave this a like because I hope you'll watch it too. One of the earlier song reactions is at 2.9K, I hope it passes 3K soon!

Crazy thing is, the animator who made this short worked on this for YEARS pretty much all by themselves, released this to universal acclaim among the fandom, and then...hasn't done anything since, they just kinda vanished.

The MLP fandom is truly amazing with how much talent and effort and genuine love goes into the various fanworks. Animations, songs, analysis videos, etc. You definitely picked a good one to react to. Celestia and Luna's backstory is so tragic.

This song and ‘The Moon Rises’ both serve as a fanmade backstory/prologue to the first 2 episodes of the FiM series. They are accurate enough to what actually went down to essentially be honorarily considered canon by the fanbase

The fan base of MLP is on another level when it comes to talent. LOTS of highly talented VA's, artists, musicians, singers. DEFINITELY give The Moon Rises a watch after this. Some of the top songs: Discord Rainbow Factory, Pegasus Device, and Awoken (All three of these involve the same topic Anthropology Join the Herd Snowdrop
