Hi Barry. If you haven't looked at yet, take a look at SIS Beta Fuel. This is a level up from their regular fuels and gels. They have them in powder (similar to Maurten powder mixes), gummy (similar to cliff blocks but higher carbs in shorter package) and gels. The gels have 45g carbs and all beta fuel products are optimized for 1:0.8 Glucose:Fructose ratio for better and faster absorption. There is also nootropics version of the gel (two flavors) with 200mg caffeine to consume when things start to get harder (for example around 30km) The packaging might now be to your liking but you can open them and deposit them to your 150ml soft flask so no sticky fingers or mess. Of the Maurten products I am using the Maurten bar right before the race while waiting in the corral. I found a little bit solid feels good.

Great Revirew , just went and ordered two flask and some citris mint (my favorite flavour) , I used precision hydration in New York , may as well support a local company for London, they are only 40 minutes away from me by car . Cheers for bringing them back on my radar (I have used the singles for half's before) .

As a type 1 diabetic, I’ve loved the precision fuel chews. 1 small pack is 30g of carbs and two chews. I dislike the packaging, I find it very hard to open but I use a sandwich bag to store them. What works for me is one gel plus one precision fuel chew every 30 mins. 45g of carbs every 30 mins and it helps me stop my glucose levels from dropping too low, which is always my worry during a long run. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I use the precision fuel gel too as the 30g of carbs works well. I prefer a larger carb quantity gel. The SIS beta works great too as it has 40g of carbs and I generally carry less on me then. In general, my biggest issue as a type 1 diabetic during a long run is just trying to limit having to carry too many carbs. I’m trying to limit the amount that I carry as I find it’s a pain, especially with carrying an insulin pump too.

Great video Barry, there needs to be more like this. I think Maurten is an excellent product but agree with your comments about the taste (or non taste). I can't stand the texture of the drink mix though so changed to Precision Fuel and find that excellent. As for gels, I use Precision Fuel and Mountain Fuel and have just bought some of the Precision Fuel chews to try. I find SIS and High 5 way too sweet. As for waste, the Kendal Mint Cake gel comes as a refillable pack so you just need to take one on your run and then refill after from a bulk pack.

I calculated all sorts of things that didn't make the video. I need a maximum of 240g for a marathon. 60g x 4 hours. I can only get 180g out of two Precision Fuel 90g pouches. So I need three of them. I can get 140g out of one 150ml Hydrapak of Kendal Mint. So I only need two pouches, and I don't have to fully fill them. That is one less pouch to carry. The full pouches weigh 160g for the PF and 196g for the KM. So there is a weight saving and the Hydrapak pouch will slide more easily in and out of the shorts as it has a rounded bottom and tapered length. I think the PF pouch is brilliant if you cycle...and there overall approach and information is impressive

@@OldManRunnerWhat about hydration, Barry? Hydration was a priority for me (it can get warm here in Oct), so I tried to drink as many carbs as possible last time around. From memory, during the mara I had 500ml of 320 maurten, 500ml of 320 caf maurten, 500ml of gatorade = so nutrition & hydration in soft flasks. Plus electrolyte pills and a couple of gels. By my count that's 80g + 80g + 36g + 25g + 25g = 246g ... so close to your total. My motto is, there is no such thing as too many carbs 😂

Precision Fuel I used in my last marathon and they sit well in my stomach and really works for me and a bit cheaper than Maurten. Saying that, I think I might go back to Maurten for Valencia. High 5 I use for training and the Citrus flavour is my favourite, great value for money

Hi Barry. I tried to post a more elaborate message but for some reason but KZitem is automatically removing for some reason. So, I just want to give a heads up on SIS Beta Fuel. It comes in powder mix, gummy and gel configurations. These are higher carbs than regular SIS products. I think you might like them.

@@OldManRunner Hi Barry, I am replying in this old tread to keep it relevant. You are probably getting ready for Boston at the moment, and this is not meant as a recommendation for Boston. I just wanted to give another heads up for a seemingly good product to consider. Recently, I got some "Virtus 02 During" Gels. I think this brand is better known in cycling circles. Each gel has 45g carbs similar to SIS Beta fuel I mentioned above. I am going to try one in tomorrow's 10K race. One plus over SIS is that these have 340mg salt in the gel. So, it knocks two birds at once. Just add water! Best of luck in Boston!

Morning Tolunay. Boston training is complete and I am in the taper. all is well. I am testing a glucose sensor in training and the marathon, for a video post marathon. As far as I can tell it shoes that my glucose was steady, no spikes or crashes, in my last 3 hr long run which I think validates my nutrition strategy. I will be using Kendal mint caffeine and caffeine. It contains electrolytes Will try and find some Virtus when in Boson. I can't see it on the internet. Very best wishes for your 10k. I am sitting here editing video while watching the Paris Marathon, wishing they would focus in more on the shoes!

@@OldManRunner I should have written "Victus 02 During". Here they are available through online store TheFeed. Victus have their own site as well. Today, I ran my 10K race but didn't actually use any gel during the race even though they were with me. I had Maurten 160 powder last night and this morning had another carb rich breakfast drink and an oat meal bar. So, carb stores were full before the race. I have to test the gel in some other event. Running with Glucose meter is very interesting so will be waiting for your video. I always wonder if I am doing enough or too much. Oh, I remember your video about Kendal mint caffeine. Good luck in Boston!

A great review of many nutrition options. Good luck with the KMC - it's not a gel that I've tried. I mainly use Tailwind for my nutrition. Have you used it or considered using it?

I might have tried the gel a long time ago. I don’t use the mix as I want to run without the weight of my hydration. I pick up the water at the aid stations. Tailwind seem to have redesigned the packaging and it looks great. Will give one of the gels a whirl when I see some to buy as it’s available here.

VERY interesting!!! I've gone totally whole food so far, but as I'm getting faster now, and more ambitious, I'm thinking maybe I'll try something to complement my trusty home-made almond-date energy balls, especially something to help for the last 10k or so of a marathon or ultra!! Last weekend I did a 24k trail race and made the mistake of thinking it's short so nothing special needed!!!🤦🏻♀ The almost constant mud, well slipped over by hundreds of feet before me, was sooooo energy draining, I ended up really suffering for the last 8km, definitely needed a little pick-me-up!! I think I'll start by trying a drink mix in one of my soft flasks.
