I am participating in Middle Grade March, just as soon as I can finish up an 801 page library book! When one of my granddaughters was a baby, she loved lemons. Whenever we'd eat at restaurant, we'd give her our lemon slices to keep her happy. It was fun to watch the horrified faces on the diners at other tables. She also loved the foam off my cappuccino. It was only because of my great love for her that I sacrificed my foam. Fortunately she's now old enough to order her own cappuccino.

🍋 my recommendation is 'the monster who wasn't'. I read it a few years ago and absolutely loved it. Here's the first bit of the blurb: it's a well-known fact that fairies are born from a baby's first laugh. What is not as well documented is how monsters come into being...

I love when you gush about middle grade. I personally did not get into middle grade as much until I was an adult working as an elementary school librarian last year. In my defense there weren’t as many diverse options as there are nowadays. Now I’m in love with that age group and am always looking for new middle grades to read. Two of my current faves are Tanya Guerrero (How to Make Friends with the Sea and All You Knead is Love) and Kelly Yang (Front Desk). They both have new books, Adrift and New From Here that you should definitely check out!

I’m a little late to the challenge since March is almost over. I have a goal to read at least one middle-grade book each month. Here’s one I recommend: “Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky” by Kwame Mbalia. It’s the first in a series of Tristan Strong books under the Rick Riordan Presents imprint. Riordan’s imprint brings us books of mythology that are based on folklore from other cultures. The Tristan Strong books are all based on African legends and African American folklore. This one was such a delight to read. Tristan, who’s grieving the loss of his best friend, goes to visit his grandparents’ farm in Alabama. The first night there he’s visited by a strange little being (who turns out to be my favorite character in the book) who steals his friend’s journal. Tristan takes off to chase her and accidentally punches a whole in the sky that separates our world from the world of legend and mythical gods. What follows is an exciting adventure that Tristan must undertake in order to return to his world with his friend’s journal in hand.

I just finished Starfish. If you haven’t read it, it’s a good and fast read. Also, The Size of Your Dreams. I can’t emphasize enough the awesomeness of this book. Next for my read is Amari also. Hopefully will be done by the middle of March. 😊

Hi Lexi ! My recommendation for you is - We Dream of Space by Erin Entrada Kelly - It is a Middle Grade and its set in the 1980's and revolves around the lives of 3 siblings and the excitement over the Challenger launching to space and sheds light on the school community after the explosion - its sad but also humbling - it was hands down a 5 star read for me

Hi, Lexi! You should check out Healer of the Water Monster by Brian Young. It was an American Indian Youth Literature Award Winner for Best Middle Grade Book. My son picked it out at the library, and we had a great time reading it. Also, your childhood love of lemons reminds me of a character, Sarah, from one of my favorite cartoons, Sarah and Duck. When I was in Middle School ( we called it "junior high" back then) about a zillion years ago, one of my favorite books was "Alvin's Secret Code" by Clifford B. Hicks.
