For me, May was slow (especially the later half, due to work related traveling) but very good. First book I read in May was Empire of the Damned by Jay Kristoff and I loved it. 5 stars for me, exactly what I expected from the sequel. I love the vampire lore in those books. Then I read Skin Game by Jim Butcher as a sort of palette cleanser. Really liked it, one of the better Dresden books. 4 out of 5 easily. Next up was The Traitor by Anthony Ryan. And while the first 2 books in that series were just about average for me, the last one really hit everything I would want from a conclusion and was excellent. 4.5 out of 5 and now I am actually looking forward to his next series set in the same world. Besides those three books, I also read 3 volumes of manga (Jujutsu Kaisen 5 and Chainsaw Man 1, 2) and one novella (The Fall by Ryan Cahill) which were all really good.

This seems to be common this year, amongst booktubers and viewers alike. I was just listening to a livestream where 4 of the 5 people mentioned feeling that they were having an off year and hadn’t really read many books that truly moved them. I feel that way personally this year. I have read many books this year that I will recognize are technically very good and even interesting but didn’t have that special feeling that I experienced with many books last year. The exceptions have been All the Pretty Horses and The Old Capital. Well, once more into the breach! Happy (future) Reading!

I think a lot of Blacktongue Thief fans will be likewise disappointed by The Daughters War because it is such a different and more serious book. It is not as overtly entertaining (though there is still some humor and fun). But as a war story and a story about a very different (and more serious) character, Galva, I think it is appropriate. For me, it’s more deeply moving than the Blacktongue Thief, though. I love it for what it is.

May for me was a great month!! My favorite book so far this year (Spin of fate by AA Vora) was phenomenal for me in terms of world and magic and themes. Easily one of the most unique fantasies I’ve read especially in YA since I’ve gotten so tired of YA since then cuz it’s so predictable and tropey Then I read The Last Unicorn by Peter S Beagle, which was just so charming and classic in its storytelling and prose and funny but in a touching way? Both of those two were Daniel Greene recommendations and he never misses. I started Name of the Wind which is mind blowing and I’m really taking my time with it because I want to soak it all in and enjoy. But it’ll probably be my top reads of… ever. lol. Just majestic. So I could binge it but I’m choosing to stretch it. I started a light novel called Apothecary Diaries which is fun! I’m not usually into manga and anime but I don’t mind light novels. I’m also startig Discworld which is great but I’ve never read parody fantasy so idk how to feel about it… yet… God and the Gumiho was another really fun Korean inspired fantasy with a swoony romance though maybe that’s not your thing. And finally Dragonfruit that’s a really special YA fantasy and one of my favorite prose styles. Idk if you read YA but it’s low on romance and has Pacific Islander inspired world that’s super nice and it’s not a debut so you can really tell the author has perfected her craft. I had some not so good reads to but not gonna post those here cuz I don’t wanna spread any hate! lol

@@PetrikLeo omg you replied! Yes I’m kinda in love with Kvothe, and he’s in my top 10 book crushes of all time! Which is weird cuz he’s a teenager in the flashbacks and that’s when I start to like him. My excuse is even when he’s 15 he reads like he is 25 lol. And I’m so excited you will consider to read Spin of Fate cuz it’s not getting any hype compared to other YA fantasy releases despite in my opinion being much better and way more unique. I guess it’s cuz most YA readers need romance and “likeable” characters they can relate to , and find the pacing really boring as it’s a bit slow. But I read more adult and YA mix so I can appreciate it and maybe you will too! Though I must warn you I did find the characters acted young and immature at times. So I dunno how it’ll compare to most of the books you normally read. I think it’s kinda realistic though, compared to like… Kvothe at 15 lol being amazing at everything and a smooth talker. But these characters definitely act like traumatized teenagers lol and not as perfect as Kvothe. Coming back to Kingkiller (sorry im obsessed) I’m going to read book 2 soon. I’ll check out to see if you have a review of it though because I’ve heard it doesn’t measure up to book 2 so I’m wondering if I should end it with book 1 and leave with a good taste in my mouth. UNTIL book 3 comes out. But idk if I got that kinda self control lol

May was a pretty good month for me: 4 anthologies (all from David Weber's "Worlds of Honor" series) & 16 books. Four 4.5 or 5-star books and only one 1-star book. The anthologies all had at least one excellent novella by Weber, though the other stories were a mixed bag. Favorite read of the month was "Working Class", book 2 of Nathan Lowell's SC Marva Collins series in his "Golden Age of the Solar Clipper" world. Lowell has become one of my favorite authors, but he writes for an audience that likes lower stakes books that are more about character and world building than action and suspense. (The reviews on Goodreads are interestingly bimodal.) If detailed descriptions of economics and day-to-day life aboard a starship sound fascinating, you're his audience.

I read a bit of a crap book, wasn't DNF worthy but it wasn't great, called Enemy of the World. I bought it ages ago just because it's read by Nick Podehl, I think it's a Korean novel translated to English, it's like if someone made an MMORPG out of a book like Sufficiently Advanced Magic and then someone else wrote a story about their character they made doing a DLC after they got really stupidly overpowered. It was alright but there was never any suspense or peril because the main character would always just beat everything with no effort. I felt the same as you before May. Where were all the amazing books? But in May everything changed for me. I think that was thanks to starting strong with "Kavithri" by Aman J. Bedi, my favorite debut of 2024 so far. So I read 12 books in May. Not counting the fact that I re-read one of the best Fantasy books of all times, "Black Sun" and its sequel in just 3 days ( felt better about "Fevered Star" on re-read), my book of the month and my favorite book of the year so far was "A Master of Djinn" by P. Djèlí Clark. That book was written for me. Murder Mystery, Steampunk and Fantasy inspired by "1001 Arabian Nights", everything I could ask in a book. I also read "Deathless". I think the fact that I knew most of the resolution from "Herald" soured my reading experience. You already know I decided to read each trilogy individualy in chronological order. I've always hated prequels, especially considering that a lot of them are just stories that we already know, just with more details. I just don't care you know. Now if we're talking about a totally different time, a story that's filled with mystery etc. I'll be happy to indulge, but otherwise I tend to just avoid them. They are rarely satisfying.

I totally get where you're coming from. Most prequels that worked for me seems to take place hundreds of years or more before the events of the main books.

@@PetrikLeo Yeah, if it happens in the same world or talks about fascinating events I'm in. What Michael J Sullivan did is cool, a completely different age and story, so i can get behind that. It doesn't help me that they have been quite popular lately.

Ome question. I read from some people that the Edan trilogy is very one sided and always presents religion as somenthing for extremists or power hungry people. Is that the case? Or is the book much more level headed than I heard? Great vid btw. Sorry to hear about the reading month btw aha

Thank you! I can see what you mean, and you're certainly not wrong to think that way. I think there's more to it, but admittedly, it appeared in the third book. :)

@@PetrikLeo I have been lucky, I started Sun Eater this year and am living for it! Moving on to book 5 this month. But I will add that I am also in the middle of the Rain Wild Chronicles for the first time and I hate them. I’m truly shocked at how much I dislike them. I can’t wait for those to be over so I can get back to Fitz.
