Haha!! I had the same thing with the S3 last month, when I took the front O/S wheel to A1 Alloys for machining damage (done by the Mrs - Honest Guv) The dash read one wheel was low. I got myself in a panic that A1 refurb guy didn't put back the pressure sensor. Frantically searching on the Audi forum I found it is measured from the ABS - phew! Then I had to find how to reset the damned thing on the MMi screen I am really not very technical. Glad my other driving toy is simple, just fuel injection, and that's about it

Nope. I hold that award. Changed my Rover 800 for a S Type in 2003. I checked the S type would fit in garage _ a no brainer as S type shorter and narrower. Drove car home. Put in garage and opened door. Jag doors wider and longer. Jag bonnet longer. So door opened onto the one and only column in garage. I could judt get out as my backside just fitted over curved part of jag side......but my wife is 8'' shorter so could only get out via back door. Even with bumper touching wall. Ended up extending garage 8 feet at cost of 10k!

Nothing taking over the driving when a sensor gives a duff reading. My daily has a city braking feature, it slams on up to speeds of 30MPH if it thinks you're going to crash. I've had it activate 4 times now, all 4 needlessly, one almost causing a crash, and another causing a road rage incident. I don't want to buy any cars newer than mine going forward as I don't trust all this pointless technology. My next car will need to have the following: mechanical handbrake, manual gearbox, no collision avoidance crap, no lane departure crap, no TPMS crap, no touchscreen crap, nothing that needs "calibrated" after a simple procedure like changing brake pads or a new windscreen. Give me something simple, it'll be more reliable.

You can also get rebuild kits (new little o-ring gaskets etc..) for the tpms sensors. To avoid having to replace them in case of a leak when the batteries and sensors still worked fine. I've had this on a couple cars due to owners getting new tires. As they hadn't received new valve stems over the years as you normally would before tpms.

not all tyre pressure monitoring works from the wheel, some work from the hub and monitor the travelling radius over 2 points, if the pressure reduces so does the time it takes to travel a revolution which triggers the system - so in a nut shell not all people with a monitoring system have this same issue on swapping wheels.

Most work on sensors in the wheels usually but some cars monitor the tires with the ABS (Mokka’s up a 16 plate has the abs tpms ) - if you have sensors in the wheels, don’t use the gunk in a can (fix a flat) as A. It fouls up the sensor B. It makes a mess for the fitter C. Tire + sensor + clean up fee = a lot of money 💰

Great video, don't feel bad about it. TPMS legislation was introduced for all new vehicles from nov 2014 and you wont be the only one caught out. You mentioned that if you do put aftermarket wheels on to remember to take out the sensors and put them into your new set. Top tip ... get your tyre service provider to make a note of the wheel locations that the original equipment sensors came out of and make sure they are put in the corresponding wheel locations for the new wheel set. For clarity if you took a sensor out of your front left wheel - make sure it is put back into the new front left wheel. This can avoid a diagnostic reset (on certain makes and models of vehicle) as effectively the car is looking for unique sensors specific to that wheel position. If anyone gets stuck, feel free to give us a shout (I-sensor is actually our product) as we provide TPMS support across the UK to professional tyre installers ..... Just like Damion, Chris and the indeed knowledgeable team at Protyre Micheldever station.

Can thoroughly recommend Micheldever Tyre Services. I started using them some 25 years ago when I was a service manager in a franchised dealer in Hertfordshire. My personal car had high performance metric tyres fitted that were very expensive. They managed to supply and fit the tyres for £100 less than my whole saler could supply them directly to me. I moved to France 8 years ago but still use them if a visit to the UK coincides with a tyre change. I didn't realise if the tyre pressure sensor system wasn't working it was an MOT failure.

Getting 45 Pirellis with all weather and wheel rim guards put on tomorrow at Kwik Fit instead of budget / unknown make- 40s, currently on these replacement wheels. I couldn't go to 50's on my 18" wheels as it looked silly and may affect the turning on the inner wing. I will ask them to ensure tyre pressure sensors are on the new tyres and are talking to the car's computer. I didn't want to mess with things but this was due to hitting and denting my 19" wheels and skinny tyres to get out of the way for a racing ambulance - bounced up a kerb to let it through arggh!

Cheers Pete, Just bought new rims for my R50 mini I'm pretty sure the tyre monitor is based on tyre circumstance on the r50 but thanks for the heads up I'll certainly check that is the case and not an in valve sensor now.

The more electronics on cars the more they fail MOTs

Very interesting and a cautionary tale for all. Personally, I rely on the MK10 right foot for tyre pressure sensing on my VW T4. Very few electronic gizmos to worry about.

A well known tyre dealer made a mess of the alignment on my company car, causing a full set to wear out in six months. One trip to Mitcheldever Tyres and I was made aware of Skoda factory bulletin declaring a fault on a batch of UK Octavias. I also had the alignment evidence to present to my fleet manager. I’m still a big fan over fifteen years later.

I changed the wheels on my car for Fox wheels and just asked the guys who did it to swap out the valves from my OEM wheels onto the new wheels. It does mean my second set (which I use as winter wheels) now would be an MOT failure though as they don't have pressure sensors. It didn't ever even occur to me that I couldn't do that lol. Also Micheldever brings back memories I took my first car a 1988 Mini City E there on the way back to my parent's place in Dorset and got a tyre changed!

Sadly the new tyres and wheels were done separately from the car as we didn't event thing about it 😪

@@PetrolPed one of those things! Thanks for the heads up, though my MOT is in Sept so shouldn't be running my winter wheels ever then. So my car must be about the same age as yours as she had her 3rd a few days ago - passed :) only advisory on the back brake pads which need changing soon. So my mods (remap, eibach prokit, wheels and LED DRL's) were all OK :)

The low tyre warning system on MINI does not measure pressure and as such there is no sensor on the wheels or tyre valves, the system uses the ABS speed sensors to measure differences in rotational speeds of the wheels, differences in pressure give differential in rotational speeds. It can be triggered following a change of tyres or wheels and may take some distance to reset once the reset is activated. The system is explained in the owners manual supplied with every MINI and the online version of the owners manual.

I think it's Jay Leno who was the first person that I heard call them all idiot lights. Doesn't take much to look at the tyres and determine whether they're soft or not, or for less than a tenner get a wee pressure monitor to check weekly or whatever at the valve. My Focus has TPMS and I've been in tyre garages as often if not more often because of the valves as/than punctures and tyre changes combined. Thank goodness they separated the valve and TPMS thing inside the wheel. Still £15-18 every time I need to change the valves but at least it isn't the £96 per wheel each time when they were one unit.
@PetrolPed

They main time TPMS is useful is if you get a deflation why driving 👍

Good that you admitted your mistake. But .... you are closer to cars than most of us subscribers. But I have 3 cars and know how much effort it takes to keep them running especially if you're also making improvements as well. Planning my Giulia QV wheel and tyre change took weeks of research. Edit: I left tyre pressure monitors in my old wheels as I was worried about wheel balancing as I wanted to reuse them in the future

Hello Pete, Thank you for sharing this issue and experience. It's not something you think would cause an issue. I too had a similar issue like this a year ago when my sensor came on and it was caused by a faulty sensor, Ford tried to tell me I had aftermarket tyres on the car and this was the cause. (they came with the car from new) so I was lucky never had to pay anything. I think you can buy the sensors cheaper than £75 if you program them yourself. To be honest, I was half expecting you to say the car failed on emissions.
