First of all congratulations for your videos and educational way used. Maybe you can help me. I have a mixer Behringer X2442USB which is connected to my PC. I would like to use it for streaming (Wirecast) but the problem is i'm using videos and sounds from same computer I streaming / record. I plugged headphones and microphone to Behringer, but I listen myself twice with a horrible delay if I use headphone output because mixer get signal from computer through USB. I guess the solution could be setup auxiliary, but how to do it if i'm using only one computer. In the computer I have Wirecast. There I mix cameras, videos and skype from Desktop capture. Would you like to help me? I have been using a direct microphone with poor quality but now I'd like to stream with mixer and a shure microphone, but latency is my problem and I wonder how to listen everything from headphone except myself to solve it out, because I don't like to hear my voice twice. Super helpful video. Thanks for posting! I just got this mixer for my podcast. Have you thought about replacing your PC w/ an iPad app that has a sound effect machine? What app do you currently use for your effects? Cheers

+Chipper Nicodemus Thank you for watching the video and for the suggestion and question. When I first started podcasting my goal was to do it with as little hardware as possible. I wanted to just use a laptop and iPad, that would have worked had I not gone crazy and decided to do other things that required more horse power. Because I use my iMac to record and do the sound effects I use an app called Sound board its not the best but it works. Thanks to having a mixer I can hook almost anything up to it. So I can still use my iPad as a sound board or I can get an actual soundboard the sky is the limit, ok ... also budget lol. If you have any more questions or comments Nicodemus hit me up.

Thanks for this. I've had this mixer for a while and learned some things. It might be more helpful to refer to the audio going to the "auxiliary out" jack rather than the "Skype channel" because it goes to wherever you send that "aux out" cable. And maybe give an explanation of what mix minus is. Anytime you're looking at a news cast and a few seconds into the live on-scene report, and the reporter yanks the earpiece out, it's because the mix-minus wasn't set up correctly and the reporter is hearing him or herself back a second or two later. It couldn't be more distracting. Very nice job, though, and I'm happy I stumbled into this.

Nice tutorial, very helpful. My problem is I only have Macs. Macs only have 1 audio interface, 1/8" in and out. How do I do mix minus with only 1 interface? The skype laptop will input into one of the channels (e.g., 1/8" to 1/4"), then there's no room for the aux back in to the laptop.

Hi Chris. Just have one more question. In the video, you use a 3.5mm to XLR cable for Skype, not a 3.5mm to mono jacks. Could you tell me more about the different between them? Thanks
@Tnerdt1
9 жыл бұрын
Max Zhang No problem, I used this connection type so I could get Skype to come into a mic input that has the built in compression. I had tried using a 3.5mm to 1/4 but the sound was not as good, could have been a cheap cable. Having the cable connected on a channel with compression can help with audio quality, cuts out clipping. As a side note I do use software for the post show to adjust preseved audio levels.

Thank you for the question and watching the video. This mixer is not really meant to use an external gate limiter. The mixer in the video has built in compression knobs. These are not the best in the world but they do an ok job considering the price of this mixer. In order to use an external gate limiter you need a mixer that has line inputs. they are usually 1/4 inputs just under the XLR mic input per channel or they are on the back like on some Mackie mixers.

Greetings, if someone can help me: So I am using Macbook Pro Early 2015, with OS Cataline 10.15.7 - latest at the moment, and I am having trouble getting signal that can be seen inside System preferences -> Sound -> Input, as seen in the video, even when I select that USB port from my XENYX X1204USB. I know that there is signal coming through my XENYX X1204USB mixer, because condenser mic that is connected can be heard through speakers also connected to the mixer, along with fader showing the signal input level, but there is no signal coming to Mac through mixer's USB port. The port is working fine, because I can play music from Mac through mixer, to speakers, just fine. Please help. :) I am trying to get the signal inside Ableton, but there is no signal even coming to Mac that can be seen or heard.

James Day Thank you for watching the video and for the purchase. When using CH 7/8 you could connect a iPad using the proper cables. Not to mention lap top pc or pretty much anything as a input. Just keep in mind CH 7/8 are audio input channels, if you wanted to have another mix minus you would have to use the fx out similar to using the Aux out. There are so many audio options when using a mixer its hard to actually list them all.

Awesome video! Thank you so much! However, i still have this doubt, i hope you can help me: 1. I would like to have Channel 1 for my mic; and then have 2 separate channels to play music (let's call it deck A - that would be assigned to Channel 2 - and deck B - that would be assigned to Channel 3). I don't have any CDJ, so my music is in my laptop, but I don't know if it's possible to assign via software, deck A (in Traktor, for example) to Channel 2 (in the mixer) and deck B (in Traktor too) to Channel 3 (in the mixer). That would allow me to "simulate" live radio, using a channel to control one deck, and the other channel to control the other deck, while loading the music in the software! Is it possible? Thank you!

Hello Finn, If you are going to be solo this should be pretty easy. Hook the mixer up to you main computer. The USB connection will be sending all of your audio from the mixer to the computer. Make sure in your computers sound settings you have the Usb selected for audio in. That will get all audio piped into the mixer to go right to the computer. Next you will want to run what ever live software or website program running on the same machine. The software will be pulling your audio from the Computer to the internet. Thats the solo setup, if you have guests, cohosts and or other audio you want to pipe in through the mixer the setup changes slightly. Example: Your Mic >Mixer > Computer > Software > Internet.

1204 has two independent aux sends/returns, does this mean I can put a compressor in the aux 1 bus and a reverb in aux 2 bus, and choose to send any channel through one or both fx? With an FX send level for 1 and 2?
@morgenkanalen9335

You keep saying that you send a signal OUT of channel 4 to your Skype Machine. That is incorrect. Channel 4 is an INPUT channel. Nothing goes out that way! What you mean is that by turning the aux-knob on the respective channel, you send the signal to the aux SEND, which goes to your Skype Machine.

Hej Chris. I have to interrupt you again. It is now finally succeeded for me to mount my mixer between two PCs, so the sound can come out on the web. Unfortunately, it sounds terrible. What am I doing wrong. I mounted cables as you can see in the picture, and when the sound should be on the net, so it goes via Shoutcast through Vimamp and on the internet via PC 2. From PC 1 goes the sound from either Radio DJ or another player. If I am not using the mixer, and plays the sound using winamp on the net, it sounds fine. It is only when sound going through the mixer it goes wrong. Heeeeeeeeeeeeelp Oh - how do I set up a picture here? All the best Finn

Hi There, i know its an old video but i got a question regarding the Phantom power. If i understood you correctly you used the headphone out of the skype machine (where the audio is comming out) to go into the XLR connector on Port 4. Your microphone is connected to XLR on port on. I would like to copy that set up( got the cord here), but i am stumped right now. My mic needs phantom power. Will the phantom power not "fry" the headphone jack on the laptop - as it is connected to an XLR port. Thanks in advance.

Excellent tutorial! I got the "wanna podcast" last year with my husband. We are working on our own little diddy and I'm learning FROM ZERO about it. I got the Behringer Xenyx 1204 USB and followed the instructions to set up...but your video went over the details so well MUCH better than any other I've seen. Thanks for that. I am stumped on a few parts: I need to connect up my iMac to the mixer. I know you have a split. I don't know what that is or what to call it when I go into Radio Shack and ask for it. I have a second microphone (which my husband and I will speak together on jaw jacking). Where does his headphone plug in? I am using audacity to record. I have Garage Band but don't know anything about it. Have you ever used Audacity? I've only practiced recording (just mic to the computer, no mix board between). Right now I am missing some connection because I cannot hear anything in my headphones despite having the mixer plugged into my computer. Forgive my ignorance - I'm seriously brand new. Like MINUTES new.

Instead of using your phones to an input, why don't you use aux/fx send to return? This would allow you to run send to fx pedals or a compressor if you want and back to return in stereo or mono. Just curious. Send and return is what I like in a mixer and I was looking at this one on reverb for like $150.

Matey i just want to give you a little bit of feedback in regards to your mixer setup, in which everyone has a right to setup there own mixer as they see fit. I think its only fair that I can help you out in just correcting you and , I'm not going to sit here and bag your vids because most of us know how hard it is to do a vids so effort to ya for doing it just want to state out one point you made and that should give you hopefully a reason to go back and read up on it you said in the vid that your mixer is not setup to take in as many inputs but that mixer it is, you said you can only have them on one channel but that mixer has 4 mic/line in channels there alone. its pre mixer that is limiting your setup. One option you have is you could have a look at getting a sound card/ interface that is used for podcasting and phone conf that you can setup each individual guest calling in to be routed on each individual channel its not that the mixer is not setup for your tasks its your pre mixer line outs from the laptop to mixer mic/line in that is limited. You only have one line out from the laptop there are many products out there for podcasting that you could relay five line outs from the interface the route the line outs for each caller to the mixer so if you sorta understand what I'm trying to say in regards to that issue. Do a search online for virtual line outs. VB ban is one off the top of my head but you need to get more outputs from your source before you can make a statement about the mixer and just quickly I personally would not spend any money on a new compressor even though they look and sound awesome I would want to use the ones you have on the mixer first before you purchase another type the compression on these mixers is pretty high quality for what you are paying for i just think that would be the better option but up to you at end of the day you still only be buying a new compressor for the same one line input as to what you are using it with here in built to the mixer , and just quickly the FX programmer is just that its not a special effects producer its for reverb, pitch shift, chorus , delay, echo etc etc. if you do go do online for a look on this topic or even back to the manual and have another look on what the mixer does and how it does or can do for you. Cheers any questions don't hesitate to hit me back up .

You should do a tut on running a G+ , YT or live-stream ,/ hangouts / super-chat…. I see so many ppl having issues w/the audio & the screen sharing…. doing these I just got this one minus the FX's. I have a good interface that has inserts USB I got the mixer to do some looping petals & other instrument into a powered speaker for drums & bass loops on the out put of the Trio petal as well as the sDrum petal w/a guitar amp combo for stringed instruments. As well as a small set up for jams w/other musicians. But this gave me a whole other application for the mixer. Great job. I'd love to see any tuts on running the live streams like a Live Podcast I suppose w/the YT G+ interface it would be well received I believe & much needed. I'm on a mac. I was just thinking it might not be that hard to take that 1/4" input on Chn 1 & make it an insert jack. I have a buddy that is an audio gear guru he'd know if it could be done easily.

I hope this hasn't been asked yet, but I'm desperate. Great video. I have this mixer and have already recorded a couple great quality 3 person podcasts with it, BUT the only way I can monitor levels is by looking at the H4N that I"m outputting to. The levels will be perfect, but the audio meter on the mixer will barely be hitting -20. I have to turn the gain all the way up for it to hit 0 and then it's distorted. But... my recordings are totally fine. I returned my first mixer thinking it was a wiring issue (customer service wasn't helpful and just told me something was probably wrong) but the new one is the exact same. When you show your mixer, your speaking voice is hitting 0. Do you have any clue what's going on? As far as I can tell everything's set properly, I record w/ pretty much all mics and the main volume set to 0 and it sounds perfect on headphones. Just no meters. Thanks either way, this is pretty much the only good video out there.

+Barrett Prime well I have mine hooked up with the USB as and audio input. I then use my 3.5 headphone jack as an audio output that plugs into channels 5and 6 using a cable that 3.5mm to stereo 1/4 jacks. If you need more details you can email me at feedback@tnerdt.com easier that way.

Hello! I have a Monoprice 615810 USB mixer, and am trying to figure out how to connect it to my computer, to hear myself and to be able to send sound through it. I am doing high school basketball broadcasts, and am looking for a way to improve my audio. Would I need an auxiliary out cable, or RCA- to 3.5 mm cables to do this connection, or would I just use a USB B to USB A cable to connect it with the computer? Thank you very much!

You seem to know quite a bit of information on this stuff so, you may be able to help me. I've got dual PCs, one for gaming and the other for streaming. I have the mixer hooked up to the stream PC by USB. I have my mic in channel 1, a set of TRS cables (3.5mm to dual 1/4") plugged into channel 5/6 and into the line out on my gaming PC, and I also have a 3.5mm to 1/4" mono cable plugged into the mic in on my PC to the same spot on my mixer as yours. The problem I am having is, the stream can't hear people in skype but can hear me and the game. I can't hear the game through my headphones nor seem to control the game volume with the mixer, so did I get the wrong cords or plug them in wrong? Also, is it possible to use the mic and be heard on both the gaming and streaming PC because right now I have to unplug my mixer from the streaming PC to the gaming PC just so i can talk on skype.
@Tnerdt1
9 жыл бұрын
Ermita I can definitely help, First- make sure the the streaming PC's audio settings are correct, USB is designated as audio input. Next make sure the 3.5mm headphone jack is your output. Second- machine is for Skype calls? If that is the case then make sure the mix minus is correct. Does that machine have two 3.5mm audio ports? One of the ports ( headphone ) should be the output to the mixer plugged into a mic in. Lets say you are in channel 2, this way you can use the built in compression. Next you will need to connect to the mic in on the Skype pc that will connect to the aux port of the mixer ( top rightish area ). Here is where the mix minus comes to play Trace down channel 1 where your primary mic is and find the red knob titled Aux. you want this knob to be pointed at left at about 6 o'clock. the farther right you turn this knob the more volume will be pushed to Skype machine from mic 1 only. Next if you want the Skype machine to hear the game audio from the streaming pc then do the same thing we just did for the mic on channel 1. here comes the minus part, you don't want the Skype channel to hear them selves. So make sure the Aux knob is turned as far left as it will go. Should have a "00" that way no audio passes back to the Skype machine from its self. I hope this helped if you do need more assistance please email me at Feedback@TNERDT.com please let me know how you make out.

I'm looking to get a mixer. My podcast has anywhere between 3 and 5 guests any given week (this includes myself). I have 4 computers available as separate skype machines plus my main computer that does the actual recording. 1) Can this mixer accommodate this sort of setup, and 2) do I really need 4 separate computers (skype mahcines) in order to keep each person on separate tracks in Logic Pro X?
@Tnerdt1

+Seth Brown This mixer does not have the ability to split more then 2 mix minus setups. Also having each host on there own channel on your recording software requires some special gear. Cost wise its better to have one Skype computer and have all hosts other then you on it. Doing sound checks and getting every one close in level. This way you only need one mix minus. If you want to go deeper into this email me at feedback@tnerdt.com

Hey Chris, Thanks for taking the time to go through your setup. Very resourceful. I'm leaning toward picking up this mixer but without the FX, since as you said, I wouldn't really use it much during my podcast. Rather than using Skye or mix minus, I've been searching for another answer that uses a cell phone instead. I came across this video below and wondered what your thoughts were on it, and if it would work on this mixer by using FX sends or other channels instead of mono. Thoughts? kzitem.info/news/bejne/mKFsuYN5bYtle2U

LundY1123 Yes I have seen this video before, I use the same cable to connect my iPhone to the mixer on the fx send. So I basically set up a second mix minus to the phone similar to the Skype laptop mix minus. Just have to go through and make sure the fx effects are not being used so you don't get some weird sounds going through to the phone or the recording. Funny you asked this question, because I just figured out how to do this a few weeks ago while looking to setup a second mix minus to live stream to Periscope app. Hope this helps, hit me up if you have any more questions.

Total Nerd Takeover Good timing on my part then haha. I guess my only question would be what other cables are needed (aside from the 4-pin to 2x 3-pin) and what channels you would connect them to? I've worked with mixers in college radio, but fortunately for us, all we had to worry about was the faders and not so much on the nuts and bolts. I just want to make sure I have the right cables as well before I get started. I'm excited to see how the ATR2100 sounds with a mixer instead of USB (loved your review on that mic by the way, it was great assurance that I had found a solid mic for podcasting). Basically, I'm fresh out of the box on setting mixers up, but should be fine with the basics. Just wanted to make sure I'm on the right track when trying to setup a way to bring in some live interviews this way.

+Reapster04 Well I can tell you for me at least right now my gain is up pretty high, I use the volume slider for my mic channel to try and level it of. I don't pay much attention to the levels on the mixer these days as long as the levels are lower then 0DB I am happy. That way I have plenty of headroom and I can boost my volume post recording. I would try taking your gain to about 3/4 full, adjust your volume level with the slider record some samples and see where the best levels are. If that does not work hit me up again we can get it figured out.

I didn't really understand what you tried to explain with the skype channel. Why do you even use 2 channels? Is this just because of the fact that you are using a laptop and your mixer is connected with 3.5mm jacks?
@nwawallace

+Fabian It's likely because it's a usb mixer and this means that it can only send and receive tracks summed to stereo. So even though there's 4 xlr pre-amps, the 4 can only be recorded as 2.

Sorry to be a pain again but I just recorded a Skype interview on my Mac without using the AUX send. All I did was run the headphone from my Mac into one of the inputs on the mixer. It recorded the entire interview. It recorded my voice, the guest on Skype and even recorded the sound effects that I have on the same Mac I used for recording. I did all this with just my one Mac. So I am just curious, why do I need the AUX Send if I just recorded everything (Skype guest, me, and sound effects) on one Mac? The Skype guest didn't hear themselves back and even if they did I was able to turn down the volume on the Red AUX volume control knob.

+DJ Takin' It Back I am not sure where we are going with this, if you are not using the Aux send why did you have to turn down the red Aux volume control knob? what is the purpose of the AUX Send if it (AUX Volume) will be turned all the way down. Also I have my MacBook pro for everything, the recording, the sound effect, the recording of the Skype guess all coming out the headphone jack into the mixer. won't that work?
@Tnerdt1
8 жыл бұрын
+DJ Takin' It Back The reason the Aux send is set to -00db on the Skype channel is so the Skype guest won't hear them selfs back. Thats why we create a mix minus. All the audio will be mixed in the mixer and sent to the guests on the Skype laptop minus their own voices. Let me try to explain how this is all set up. I need the mixer to mix all the audio and then have it all go back to my iMac for recording. I need to have to different computers set up. 1 that handles sound effects and recording this goes into the mixer then is mixed so my Skype computer can hear the effects. After that the Skype guests and the sound effects or music can be mixed and hit the recording iMac. This is the only way to mix all the sounds without having a external sound card or using some kind of software that can split all the audio and allow every one to hear it and be remixed back in the recording machine. My recording software does not record what i hear and what I say in my mic without a mixer. This is why I have one in the first place. Makes it easy to mix multiple audio sources without relying on software.
@djtakinitback9717

+Total Nerd Takeover But here is my thing. I have the same mixer you have. I use one Macbook Pro. I set the Macbook Pro with the 1204 USB mixer. So the sound from the headphone jack on my Mac goes into Channel 4 (Skype Channel) on my mixer. My mic that I speak in goes into Channel 1 on my mixer. Then I have Audacity to record everything that goes into my mixer Skype interview and my voice from the mic. I even have sound effects on my mac. So I use one mac to record all of this without using a second computer. When I interview on Skype they sill her me without hearing themselves. So this is why I ask why I need a second computer if Audacity records everything (including the Skype interview) coming out my mac?

Hey can you expand on the Aux Out? I am doing my first Skype interview. I have a laptop and will be setting it up very similar to yours. You mention the Aux Out being important but I seem to be missing where they goes to. Does that go to the Mic plug on the Skype Laptop? Also you mention it being important for the Mix Minus, I understand the Mix Minus but I am missing the connection to the Aux Out. Essentially I am trying to figure out how to plug everything in. I have a Y-adapter on the Phones plug and both my co-host and I (in the same room) plug our headphones into that to monitor ourselves. Adding Skype in the only piece of the puzzle I am not grasping is what connects to the Laptop Mic slot for the Skype guest to hear. Thanks for your video, it has been super helpful not only to setup when I got a mixer but to understand why it works.

Congratulations on doing interviews, very exciting, I need to fix that part of the video with the AUX part. Ok so my aux coming out of the mixer is going into the mic input on my Skype laptop. That way I can channel any audio I want to the Skype laptop using the AUX line out. The headphones port from the same laptop goes back into my mixer as an audio input device. Basically all audio coming from the laptop will be mixed into the mixer and sent where ever you need it. Remember the red AUX knobs on each channel? Every one of those knobs acts like volume control to the aux cable going to the Skype laptop. So every audio source you want the Skype laptop to hear needs to have the aux knob turned up. Do not turn the aux knob on the channel that is coming from the Skype laptop other wise the Skype callers will hear them selfs back. Thats where the phrase mix minus comes in, you have the audio going into the mix minus that audio back to that source. Hope that clears it up, if not hit me back up. Good luck with the interview.

You will be sending the audio out of your PC to the mixer from a speaker out port , that plugs into a audio input on the mixer? like channel 3 for example? You will be pushing your voice from the mixer USB out to the computer USB in? You want to play music on the PC have it go into the mixer so you can hear it through the headphones? This way you can sing the song and have your voice recorded? Do you want the music recorded also?

+Total Nerd Takeover Hi...let me try to answer your queries one at a time... 1. I have 1 laptop and I am using audacity software on it. I have got karaoke mp3 which I can import as track 1 in audacity and 2. I have a headphone connected to mixer so that I can hear the karaoke mp3 which is played on laptop and audio input on the mixer is heard via the headphones connected to mixer (I dont have speakers connected to mixer just have the headphone) 3. I have connected my condenser mic to channel 1 on mixer and yes I want to send my voice from mixer to laptop via USB 4. Yes I want to play music on PC and have it go to mixer so I can hear on headphone so that I can sing and have my vocal recorded. I already have a karaoke mp3 so dont need to record the music. However, once I apply all effects to my vocal track then eventually I would like to mix the music (karaoke) track and my vocal track to have an overall track of my vocal with music. Hope that made sense
