Your curls won’t be “poppin’ ” until you cut your damaged straight hair off.. It will be hard to wear out/ care for until the damaged hair is all gone. I transitioned years ago and tbh i just wore braids 24/7 to let my hair grow for 1 year back to the same length but healthier then i big chopped.

It is, you have to take your time and really look after your hair but it is different for everyone. Heat really damage my hair so I dont use hair straighteners at all. What are braid out or twist outs I may try them
@bo2356
4 жыл бұрын
@@sierrawarren843 Braid outs and twist outs are protective styles for natural and transitioning hair. Literally the meaning is in the name. Braids out is when you section your hair and braid each section (like a 3-strands). Twist outs include twisting sections on your hair (2 strands). Before you even do these techniques, it's very important to do the LOC/LCO method while detangling with a wide-tooth comb, denam brush, and etc. LOC stands for Liquid, OIl, and Cream while LCO stands for LIquid, Cream, OIl (I use the LCO because oil is a sealant so its logical why it should be the last step in moistruzing your hair after washing it). By liquid, I mean water simply water. Some people have suggested using diff waters depending on where you live and the temperature there. For Cream, it can include a leave-in conditioner, a cream moisturizer, and etc. For Oil, it means olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, and etc. After you apply all these three for each section, then you can braid or twist it. Then after that you cover your hair with a bonnet or a silk scarf and you can sleep on it overnight (what I do) or some people wait for a few hours and take the down. Twist outs, flat twists, braid outs, and etc are important! My hair gets tangled if just left out like that so its a bonus that I get to do the LCO method and then twist it and keep it protected. Lastly, you can even keep these twists/braids out for a whole week (I've done that) because some people don't like constantly doing this everyday. Sorry one more: Don't forget to re-moisturize your hair after wash day! By that I mean, just because you fully wash your hair on a Sunday doesn't mean wait till next Sunday to get moisture in your hair again. Every 2-3 days, do the LCO/LOC method and re-braid or re-twist then the cycle continues :) Hope this helped xx

Been natural my whole life and it seems like we have similar textured hair so I’ll share what’s working for me in hopes it works for you! Since we’re in quarantine this is the perfect time to heal ur hair. 1. Wash and deep condition 2. Prepare a batch of warm olive oil 3. Prepare a spray bottle of green tea/or matcha 4. Separate hair in sections and apply green tea and warm olive oil and leave in conditioner/moisturizer of choice 5. Braid the hair, wrap it in a silk scarf and leave it alone The best thing for natural hair is good creams, warm oil (or water to open the cuticles) and low manipulation styles!

Getting recommendations is a great start but you will soon learn that some products don’t help hydrate your hair like they do for others or it doesn’t help like it does for others. Your hair could do great with Cantu products but one day it could stop helping as much and that’s because your hair is constantly changing.Test out products here and there and use oils like jojoba, coconut, argon, etc. Testing different products is fun but frustrating lol. Good luck on your hair journey!

I would definitely recommend Shea moisture and Maui moisture products. They are made without all those bad ingredients for your hair. I wouldn’t recommend Cantu just because I find it’s very drying and many many people can agree. It will be a process of trial and error so you just gotta find what works best for you! I’m almost 2 years in and trust me I’ve had many bad hair days💀. I would also recommend trying to avoid color at least until your hair is healthy because color damage is irreversible and ik many you tubers who had to big chop due to color damage. Figuring out your hair porosity will TRULY help you when figuring out how to care for your hair and what products you should use. Just look up curly hair porosity test and try it out. Cut off the damaged ends when you are comfortable and try protective styles. Wishing you good luck on your journey!

I went through this as well and the best thing to do if you want to see your curls pop is to cut the ends and reduce the amount of time that you get you hair blowdried. Blowdrying your hair stretches the curl out causing it to have less ability to shrink and form.

I disagree with many of the comments saying she should cut off her straight ends/do the big chop. Based on what I saw, I can see her dead ends but the line of demarcation still wasn't clear enough. At times, I could barely see curls on her roots. This heavily indicates to WAIT and BE PATIENT. This is why transitioning is an existing process. People only say do the big chop because it bothers them seeing two textures but honestly you need to transition for a few months when the curls are forming more and more clear. Nia, definitely, trim your hair monthly but not the big chop or you might even cut healthy curls in the expense of curiosity and etc. I've been transitioning for 11 months and it has been hard but I've learned even more about hair because of that experience. I ain't gon lie tho I did some chops on certain strands but not all of it xx

Hey Nia! I transitioned to natural hair for about a year and a half before I cut my ends off. Just keep doing braids and it'll fly by. To get your hair to grow quicker during that time look up rice water rinses, MSM powder, stuff like that. Hot oil treatments with castor oil and wild growth oil! Massage that scalp and don't use heat! Your hair will thank you!

Don't worry about the split ends, grow them out and clip them as you go. My tips: 1. Watch other KZitemrs as to how to style your hair in-between your protective styles. 2. Learn about your hair (low or high porosity, 3A-4C type hair, etc.) It'll help with product selection. 3. If you feel the products didn't do your hair justice, do not be afraid to return, exchange, or give them away and try ones that are better. 4. Once you've applied your conditioners and stuff to the section, I've found that it helps with manageability to plat twist it. 5. With products you want to make sure you have at least a shampoo, conditioner, cowash, deep conditioner, and moisturizer/oils. Some products I've used that I found worked: Shampoo>Taliah Waajid Bamboo & Coconut Milk Moisterizing Mint Conditoner>Aussie Triple Moisture CoWash>Shea Moisture High Porosity Deep Conditioner Mask>Shea Moisture High Porosity Moisturizer>Mielle Organic Hair Milk Oils>Caster,Pepperment,Coconut, Jojoba, etc. Hope this helps! And congrats on UCLA!

Hi Nia! I have some tips for you; try putting wigs whenever you wanna go out or do some twists out or braid outs. Try to avoid heat! If you wanna use heat, use a heat protector. Do you know your hair porosity? Your porosity determines how much moisture you need to put on your hair. Continue to deep condition your hair and do the LCO/LCO method. I hope this helped you :)

A bit late to the party, but one thing I’d recommend to help with curl definition is to try a protein treatment. I personally use Shea Moisture’s Protein Power Treatment mask and LOVE it. When I first used it my curls transformed from a 2C pattern to 3A, and its stayed that way. I now use it once per month though you can use it whenever you feel your curls are losing their definition. Just be sure to follow the instructions and don’t leave it in longer than 20-30 minutes because protein overload is a thing. The only other bit of advice I’d recommend is to keep with the curly girl method. The transition phase is rough and (sadly) there will initially be more bad hair days than good. Eventually your curls will figure themselves out though. You’re going to look in the mirror one day and absolutely love your gorgeous natural curls.

Braids are a great protective style, but in order for you to really know how to style and what to do for your natural hair you just have to play around with it. Once you cut those dead ends off it will make everything a lot easier. I was hoping you were going to cut some of them off. You’ve transitioned enough to just cut the ends. You would see such a big difference in your curls once you do. Also.. You purchased a lot of products that you could’ve done without. Try and make your hair routine simple.

haha i've watched so many natural hair journey's as a white female and they are all fascinating. I learned a lot about how hair works and different types too that helped me with my own hair! One thing about the "western/eurocentric beauty standard" is it doesn't even include all western/european people. its like one very very narrow standard. The hairstyles and maintenance are basically only for thin, straight, medium porosity hair. So I am super appreciative of black women for doing the work they've done to teach us about all different hair types.

don't feel bad about putting protective styles in your hair like braids or wigs/weaves. they grow your hair if u keep your scalp & hair moisturized. they won't do any harm unless you neglect your natural hair underneath!

Well heat isn’t inherently bad, curly girls with low porosity like myself can benefit from using heat from steamers or diffusers in order to retain moisture. It’s about frequency, using protective sprays/oils, and knowing how not to overdo it. But every curly hair journey is gonna be different😎🤌🏿

Love the natural curls, but I personally think the straight ends should be cut off. It’ll help your hair grow a lot better and healthier. Plus by the looks of it, the chop won’t be that much anyway. Also lay off the heat👍🏾

Yep! I have been staying away from heat. A lot of damage from over the years.

Unknown Unknown I feel like she should keep the ends grow out her hair until it is as long as she wants than cut it off, not a lot of people like letting go of the length, so I think that would be good for her.
@iiamayaii9946

CaptainTAE but here is the thing though, her ends are really long so if she cut them off it's going to be hard to work with, so she might as well grow it out and cut the ends, it's not like her hair from the roots is going to turn straight because of her ends.

The answer isn’t always cutting. The hair can be repaired and become stronger. Low manipulation, good products, oil, and leaving it alone is the best thing she can do. Cutting is not always the answer ladies!

@@iiamayaii9946 she can cut them off and continue to get braids as her hair grows to not have to deal with the awkward length but it will grow way faster if they are cut. I dealt with the same kind of heat damage and now my hair is super healthy and long.

Hey nia. One thing that might help kind of “hide” your dead ends is twist outs,braid outs, and flexi rod sets. I would recommend you buy hair butters, leave in conditioners, and oil when you try twist outs and braid outs. Carols daughter and mielle organics have great products💕.

Nia! Your hair is beautiful. Cut off the straight ends though so your hair can grow healthy! Then all your curls will come back down through the ends. I recommend trying braid outs and twist outs for protective styling, and try shea butter and see how it works for you! Also, once you start wearing your natural hair out for longer periods of time, deep condition every week! Good luck on your journey sis! :)
