The lead vocal had inflections reminiscent of Stevie Wonder, so much so that when I was young and heard this, I thought it was actually a Stevie song. But turns out the artist was Fat Larry James and the lead vocalist, Freddie Campbell, both now passed. RIP and thanks for that memorable chorus. It's one I'll never forget

"Fat" Larry James (drummer, vocalist) was born in Philadelphia & formed "Fat Larry's Band" in 1976. They released nine albums & over a dozen singles but never had a charted Hot 100 single. "Fat Larry" died in 1987, the band folded. "Zoom" was released in 1982 on Philly's WMOT Records & received massive local airplay but could do no better than a peak of #89 on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart. The song was recorded at Alpha International in Philadelphia & produced by "Fat Larry." It was written by Philly's Len Barry & Bobby Eli. Barry was Hy Lit's brother-in-law & was the lead singer of The Dovells & had a solo smash I-2-3 in 1965. Eli was a founding member of MFSB & wrote "Love Won't Let Me Wait" & "Sideshow." The stardom that eluded "Fat Larry's Band" in the U.S.was found in the UK where "Zoom" peaked at #2 & spent 5 weeks in their Top 10. It is ranked at #29 in the UK for 1982. "Center City" their first single had a #31 peak in the UK. Their single "Act Like You Know" appeared on the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Soundtrack, WMOT (We Men Of Talent) Records was an independent label that produced songs in the "Philadelphia sound" soul tradition. Some of the labels biggest hits were "Love Won't Let Me Wait" by Major Harris (#1 R&B, #5 pop 1975) and "Sideshow" by Blue Magic (#1 R&B, #8 pop) in 1974. Their biggest hit was the 2 million selling "Double Dutch Bus" by Frankie Smith. I posted this video because it's the longer version & includes the killer chorus at 1:24. There's a shorter live version posted below from their appearance on the UK's "Top of the Pops."

Great track. My brother bought the 7" single when it was released. I couldnt stop playing it for a little while, i also liked the flip side track "house party". Was into hip hop in the 80s 90s and learned that the backing de la soul used for one of their hit songs was a fat larry band track from the same album zoom was from called " act like you know". Thanks fir the reaction.

Beautiful song ... but 2 observations. One, could this song be about heroin? "Bang, just one touch (plunge) and church bells rang .... Oh zoom (black tar) you chased the day away". These guys seem so earnest, but sometimes sunny melodies mask dark realities. Two, lead vocal sounds as if Kanye West could've been singing it.
