The sound rythmic one from the engine is probably from the sifong on the engine. The stuffing box on propshaft, just screw it a little tigther and the leak will be fixed, if notm take out the thread inside and replace it. Head, I saw a handle, red one on the head truhull, look left. The stove is worth fixing. Those diesel stoves are very good and you dont need to build a looker for the gas and draw new lines. My evice! Rip out as little as possible. if stuff had hold up for 50 years, dont exchange it with some cheap stuff that will brake in a couole of years. The boat looks tidy and in good shape, Put your money in good sails!

Well that’s good! Thank you for all of your insight, i am completely new to inboard engines. I’ve also been talking with Electric Yachts to outfit the boat with an electric engine and lithium battery bank, but for heat I know a lot of sailors up north where I am use a diesel heater, so I am now thinking of keeping the stove/oven and having a smaller, auxiliary fuel tank for that. Any thoughts on how big that tank needs to be to run heat and cooking? I am also a big proponent of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”, especially with the build quality of this old boat. The smaller thruhull to feed the head does not have a valve I don’t think, but the big one does. But it doesn’t really matter, I’m replacing them now and filling a few of the ones that are just capped off. Ya, no cheap stuff please, I’ll get really sick of boat repairs abroad if I get don’t rebuild it back strong.

@@sailingsolo5290 Indeed, you'd be looking at 15-20k to go electric on that vessel, the Lithiums alone will cost 5k minimum to get to 600+ amp hour of quality internal BMS units. add the cost of wiring and proper solar array and MPPT gear to keep them topped off, Big $$ to do it right , and then you still need the motor and gearbox and controller. You can buy a new BETA 30hp diesel and be set for 30 years for 10k. Ask Dan/Kika how much their electric setup cost on UMA and you'll run away fast.

I had a 1970 31" Seafarer Yawl. I had it for over 30 years and loved every minute of it. It was a Bill Tripp design and was built in N.Y. at the time Seafarer went belly up. This looks identical to the boat my late father used to keep up at La Conner which the family sold in the early 2000's. Our whole family is tall and the generous headroom was a main feature along with the 'Tiny Tot' wood stove connected to the chimney. He and I took it up to the Queen Charlotte's (now Haida Gwaii) in 1984. With high winds and following seas there was very poor control due to the fact that the rudder was attached to the keel, instead of separately at the very stern for better leverage. Good luck with your adventures.

You have a very fun and accommodating Seafarer now, but looking at the C - Chain Plate and that bulging, I'm afraid to tell you that you are in for a much bigger project than you may know. In Fact, you may find that entire section of hull rotten and too far gone to be fixed correctly to achieve your goal of a Worldly Cruiser. I'm sure it can be patched/glassed up reasonably but you often find one bad spot leads to another and another until you find the money vs. value formula is very far upside down. If you are familiar with Jordan & Desiree in Atticus 1 ,, They rebuilt their Allied Seawind over a stretch only to later find rotten bulkheads as they prepared for a Pacific crossing. I honestly suggest patching up what you can and sailing her locally and having fun, but to invest all you have mentioned, i.e. Windvane and Lithium Batteries and Solar and new boom and replacing windlass system, fixing the wiring and through hull fittings and stove , ect ect , you are already in the 20k plus category. I'm going to venture and guess you paid around 4-5000$ for the boat initially ?? Well for 25k you could buy a turnkey Blue Water cruiser that is truly ready to safely make an ocean passage. Regarding a Wind Vane, aint nobody giving them away under ambassador promos, that I can assure you.... Check out Wave Rover channel, Alan sells plans to build a very affordable and great performing unit for under $500. I just sold a new old stock Sail O Mat 605 for $3000. Wind Vanes are not cheap. If you really hate that Boom furler, I'd but it or trade you for something you need more. I have been looking for that exact boom for a Cutter project i'm building. Lastly ,, keep in mind getting Insurance for your boat. To get legit insurance, you'll need a proper survey, and with those chain plate issues and valveless thru hulls, a survey that is favourable will be very difficult. I wish you luck by all means and speaking from many a year of experience ,, don't open your wallet too wide on that vessel or a refit. Fair Winds Friend.
@projectseawolf
Жыл бұрын
Wow, thank you for all the useful information! Ya, big fixes are new to me but I’m excited to see what I can do and I totally expect that blistering to continue well away from those spots. Paid $25k, Survey value $35k, insured through State Farm with $35k replacement. As soon as I dumped out my wallet to buy the boat someone I know put there Monitor Windvane up for $1.4k but I didn’t have that much left over lol Ya with the wiring we’ll see, as I’m cleaning out the boat I will judge if it really needs to come out. In the same way I’ll start working on the hull repair and if it really is not fixable I’ll have a point where I can start again on another boat before I get too invested. Boom furler jams up too easily and in conditions I do not want it to, so ya that’s going to go but selling it will help me get a new boom. Rotted bulkheads honestly would be an easy fix, just a lot of work so if they were not prepared for that kind of thing then that’s too bad. Over the next few years I will be working on her to see if I can get her up for the task, if not then ya, she’s an overbuilt local cruiser for the Sound.

Hey, I did same, focused on rig, rudder, thruhulls, and blistering. Had so much fun sailing meantime. But I should have taken the rudder/tiller system apart. Replacing a cutlass bearing and a cracked stainless skeg shoe underwater was "interesting." I'm a minimalist on all boat systems cause my focus was sailing, and the only electrics I cared about was the VHF, running and steaming lights, EPIRB. However I would study the weather for several days before going on a coastal cruise, usually 3/4 day trips. Indirectly this forced me to hone sailing skills since we sailed, tacked, jibed into almost every mooring, pier, dock, cove, lagoon, sans engine. Every month or so we'd do an engine trip against tide and swell to blow out the carbon, or so we figured. Love that Yanmar. This was on a fin keel, 3/4 skeg hung rudder so maneuvering was fairly easy, full keels might be a little more demanding in a moorage.

I would not change things that are not broken. Or get rid of stuff you dont have a replacement for yet. 2027 is a long time from now. Maybe the first thing to do it get the boat out of the water and put on new antifouling and check the underside of the ship. That way you know for sure the boat is going to last. Greetings, Jeff

Yup! Just hauled her out and cleared out everything inside. Now I’ve got a clean start to tackle the projects. I’m leaning towards going electric with everything, since that is what I’ve done on past boats. It’ll be more expensive but I won’t have to worry so much about fuel. Just gas for the generator and auxiliary tank for a drip-diesel for overwintering. Working on getting the mast down right now as I’m writing this, that way I can get behind the chainplates and start rebuilding the fiberglass around those and installing beefy external plates. I am usually a “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” guy as well, but I’ll be hauled out for over a year at least and I really want to modernize things that have caused issues for other circumnavigators.

You have water inside your hull near the chain plate
@projectseawolf

Yup! So to repair that, should I grind it out, re-lay fiberglass, fill it all out and re-drill for the chainplates? Or will it be more extensive than that?

If you are going to be in cold climates ( like beliw 50 fahrenheit ) that thick mattress will be a life saver. Amazing how much body heat you can lose from below. Experience! Also, an autopilot with a remote can be used as an inside steering station for bad weather. Enlarge the forward windows in your "pilothouse". Use solar panels to create a bimini top. Especially if going electric. Panels are cheap nowadays. I would keep the davits. You will want more solar than that. For electric inboards go with Elco Marine. You can recharge your batteries from your spinning prop while under sail. Batteries should be LiFePO4 not LiIon. Much longer life, much less fire risk. Sorry I am old and opinionated, but have some actual experience along with those opinions.

Turns out the mattress was pretty nasty, and ya I’ll be looking for a warm replacement because I have lived aboard a smaller boat on anchor in Washington in winter. Most of the time I will be in the tropics, but I plan on doing the inside passage, wintering in Scandinavia and Australia/New Zealand so yes, it will need to be a warm set up, although most of the time I like sleeping midship or sea-berth even in port. That’s an interesting idea, steering from inside sounds excellent for rough cold days. I will definitely set that up now. Yup! I set up solar on my old boat and loved it, totally self sustained me even in the winter while I surveyed marine mammals for my thesis work. Thanks for the battery set up tips, I am looking for a safer way to do lithium. Because I’m single handing I plan on making safety the highest priority since there will be no one to help me out there. I hope you follow along and help me build out the boat, I need all the help I can get!

Will you be filming your trip through the Swinomish? I've always wanted to see the perspective from a sailboat. We typically get to to San Juans via the strait

@@projectseawolf I was thinking about doing similar to my Islander 36. I had toyed with the idea of using fiberglass mat on the lower panel on the outside to smooth it but keep it stained wood inward. Or possibly fitting rubber gaskets on the sides and bottom, adding 4 barrel locks to keep the pressure on when at sea but also still removable at port or anchor.

Well from my first view of this boat it really didn't need to be done, but now that I've been working on it for a year I am defiantly replacing it. @@projectseawolf my sailboats have always seemed to me to be my home my tandem axle cargo trailer has always been a catch all garage. I have never been able to buy a truck large enough to trailer my sailboats and the lake my family live on is too skinny for any of my last sailboats. I demand performance and function as well as the ability to survive anything Mother Nature can throw at it within reason. I avoid hurricanes and try to stay away from the zone during the season. “ I’m just a poor billionaire that barely keeps my family fed.” But all the plans for this sailboat seem excessive just the lithium battery bank surpasses the value of the boat, the drip can be an easy fix just replace the packing. The stove if it can be fixed back to working condition how often do you really use it? Are you located in the north you can heat with diesel unless you want to use the oil filled heater you found behind the cushion, is a good one as long as you have a place to plug in to.

My brudda, did you have the boat surveyed? Have you already bought the boat? I saw what appear to be several large blisters all along the port side hull. Also, that "chain plate" is not original to the boat. It was put there to fix some deficiency that developed with the boat. I see four of what appear to be blisters around it. Blisters means water is penetrating the gel coat and deteriorating the hull.

Looks like I’m going to have a lot of fiberglass work to do and I need to get the mast down asap to start working on the chainplate areas. Any resources on how I can make new bomb-proof chainplates for Dyneema rigging? ⛵️
