If you're running pfSense do it under proxmox, screw ESXi :) Check out opnSense too if you haven't seen it before.
@ChucksBasix

If you want to get anywhere in the enterprise world, you would be better off with VMWare ESXi experience. As for the whole, "if it's PFSense, do it under ProxMox" statement, why? I have had zero issues running 2.3.2_R1 and 2.3.3 on ESXi 5.5, performance is good, no issues with the VM hanging during boot.

proxmox is KVM based so shares resources way better that ESXi especially with running linux VM's.

If your argument is KVM is better for linux guests then that is a moot point since pfSense is FreeBSD based.

Very nice. I would suggest sticking a small fan on the modem. The thermal pads on mine would off-gas when warm causing a BO like smell. From what I've read its not too uncommon either. I rebuilt mine with a bigger heat sink.

It would be worth getting some shelving for those tower servers because if you have a problem you don't want to be moving things around to fix etc. Just a thought, I've got each server on a separate shelf in case anything happens.

Nice Lab/Home Rack. If I could make some suggestions. 1) Re-Thermal Paste the CPU's on server such as this often caked and old cheap mass produced pads and can increase heat exchange efficiency with some AS5 (Less Fan Spin). 2) Noctura makes some great 40/60mm Fans that will fit into cases and switches by Cisco, try this they are about 30% more Quiet at full spin and much better at idle. Thanks for the vid. Subbed.
@AFKTech

Yeah they all have MX-2 on them already, that's the first thing I do when I get used stuff. I'll have to look around for fans. I have noctuas in my workstation but I didn't think the fan in the 3750E was something that noctua has to replace it.

Tekmyster an r610 is overkill for a pfsense box. The r210ii is a perfect pfsense box. The R810 is great for heavier tasks, but an r710 is a better choice unless he needs that expandability.

That Netgear switch would be an awesome addition now that I have started using a pfsense VM for routing. I have resorted to using my old netgear WNDR4300 wifi router as my switch for the rest of my house, not ideal, but it works. Also, this video kinda weirded me out, because in my closet, I too have a TS-140 sitting on top of a computer that uses that same HP case. whoa.

Nice setup. I have a few questions. 1) Why not put esxi on your ts140 and virtualize freenas? All you'd need is a $100 raid card from eBay flashed to be an HBA for pcie passthrough. Then you'd have the recommended ecc memory and it could run all day and not really use any extra power. 2) Why run Blacks in your freenas box? TLER? Did you just have them laying around? 3) 1:00 When did Cisco start writing the code for iPhones? Lol.
@AFKTech
7 жыл бұрын
1.) Well that would be ideal but I technically co-own it with my roommate so it's pretty much strictly used as our plex box. 2.) They were originally just lying around so yeah no TLER unfortunately. 3.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cisco_IOS Unless you're just being funny. It's the operating system on Cisco enterprise devices.

....still waiting for the Enterprise part. 3 PC cases in a small rack, a cisco switch and a ESXi with 2GB of memory doesnt make it Enterprise. Do whatever you want with what you have, but Enterprise it is not. I can't imagine any Enterprise/company running any IT infrastructure off that rack.
@AFKTech
7 жыл бұрын
nutellagnuen You're right, it's not enterprise nor would a company that would have the designation of "enterprise" be using this or anything near it besides the rack itself. I simply was excited about my new setup with getting everything into the rack and actually venturing into rackmount related hardware. I could spend 10k and fill it up with a bunch of R720's with more RAM than I could count, spend enough on power a month to feed a family, and you'd still be here commenting probably. Thanks for view though, maybe make a more constructive comment next time instead of just being down on people who are getting started into homelab.

Hello, I practice home server hosting from ten years now. In the past i have entreprise grade server and i just stop to use them. When you mount a server room at home, you don't realy use them for generate money and a true server room can generate a lot of cost about energy. Except if you mount your home lab for practice hardware maintenance / play with entreprise grade hardware (like myplayhouse), i don't think it's mandatory. Just for the example, i run on an i5 box with 32 gig of ram, this server was started in 2012 and run 24/7 since them without no issue and consume much less than a server grade hardware (i think about some old server hardware, but brand new server hardware is too mutch expensive for an hobyist). But finaly it's depend what you try to achieve (did you need an hardware raid controler ?), what is the prupose of your home servers room (lab, self hosting, ...). @AFK Tech, if you want to have your rack look a little bit more proffessional, i found some great 8U rackmount tower where i put my server and my x86 nas. With that i have the advantage of racmount tower (easy maintenance) with my customer grade hardware. At the end, if you don't think we can run datacenter at more customer hardware, just look who is OVH.com they do that every day with a huge server parc.

@AFKTech
7 жыл бұрын
That's really NOT AT ALL how you're supposed to do it. I just put that there because I got a little patch panel happy and wired everything to it. Regardless, the left port is the line from the modem, then the one it is connected to goes to the WAN port of my PFSense VM. Thanks for the comment!
@SOU6900

AFK Tech Well as long as you know what you are doing is all that matters. The whole networking thing is kinda outside the scope of my knowledge. I do know what things like the patch panel, switch and other things are and what they do but I'm not familiar with the technical working of them. Most of my computer knowledge revolves around building and some repairs which is why I've been wanting to go back to community college to take networking classes to try and get a more in depth knowledge of doing networking setups like yours.
@AFKTech

Roger Roger. Get back there or start learning online. The reason for not doing it that way is you're creating 3 new points of failure, each keystone jack and then the new wire. Thanks for the comment, be sure to sub!

AFK Tech Ok so I thought about it and unless things change personally and with my ISP I doubt I could do this like I want since my Internet access requires a satellite dish in my yard from Dish. Having said that U still want to do something that I've researched and that is taking old computers and making them into a firewall and a nas box. I remember you mentioning in your video something about a virtual machine and was wondering if a VM is necessary for a home data center and am also interested in what you use your data center for. Sorry if I'm being nosy but this is all a big interest to me.

Why is it that 9 is plugged into 10 on their most top unit?
@AFKTech
7 жыл бұрын
I made an amateur move and patched the servers into the patch panel. For that specific case, 9 is the port out of the back of the modem, and 10 goes to the WAN port on the PFsense box, basically just bridging them. Not really a smart thing to do because it introduces 3 new points of connection failure, (2 keystones, and the bridge wire).

Cisco? Eww. NEVER. personally i have dealt with better performance using a gigabit lan un-managed switches from TP Link. I think cisco is a complete waste of money now days. The most expense switches i have are the dell power-edge models. I dont remember off the top of my head. But anyhow, ESXI is not bad software to use if you know what your doing with it. I dont have a whole lot of issues using windows server hyper-v but its not too often i throw into the virtual world. Some of the stuff i do involves dedicated servers. Not virtual.

I'm not asserting that this is a production environment that you will see at a business or an experienced industry professional's setup for that matter, but it's also not a strictly consumer environment. However, you can consider it clickbait if you feel the need to do so. My title is named the way it is because it's a step up from my previous setup as well as introducing more enterprise oriented gear. You're not really providing anything constructive besides saying hey my hardware is enterprise and yours isn't.
