I could not resist a #8 at a city-wide flea market several years ago. In 2021 I helped my son build a 12 x 16 shed with a garage-door entrance. I put the #8 in his hand and had him joint the header that we made out of 10-foot 2 x 12’s. Priceless!

An old joiner I knew back in the 1970s had a similar plane but slightly longer. On the sole of the plane it had longitudinal V grooves cut into it's length. This was to reduce the friction of this monster jointing plane. I have to say I was always very jealous of this old boys massive tool chest and the incredible tools kept in it. He was from an era when no power tools existed, he had five different size braces for boring holes and the biggest bit was 3" in diameter and the brace for for this bit was massive. Love the channel, keep on filming and informing. 👍🙂

I'm late to the party, but I really love your excitement over a plane. I also feel that excitement for hand planes. I am also a participant on the CIHI site and love it very much. Enjoy that 8! You'll find excuses to use it. I know you will, even if it's the most expensive paper weight you have every purchased! Thanks for sharing.

It's not getting a lot of use, but it makes me happy when I see it up on the wall, and once in a while I'll pull it down to use even when a 6 or 5 would probably do the trick, just because it looks lonely (or I feel like a little more of an arm workout).

I needed this plane. Well, maybe I didn't NEED it, but it has turned out to be one of my favorite handplanes and I use it all the time. It did an awesome job flattening the top of my Roubo workbench and is a joy to use for face flattening and edge joining along with its smaller team mates.

Just rescued a small herd, a #4 type 11, a#5 1/2 type 11 and a #6 type 4 prelateral. The one I wanted most was the 5 1/2 and another 4 type 11 is nice too. All for eighty bucks, good irons and wood, all complete. But already have a 6 and several 4's. Thing is that old number six is too cool and works good and is lighter than my type 13, number six.was going to sell but now having second thoughts. That's how it goes I guess.

I'm also guilty of buying planes I don't need and will never use because they're a good price. And I have a small collection of them in boxes that I should probably sell.....but who knows? Maybe I like having them around. Maybe shut up and I can do what I want? Hahaha

Just like you, I didn't need one, but I couldn't resist either and I love having it there - just in case!!! No one needs to spend silly money on modern planes when the old ones do the job just as well and will never really wear out. I hope my great grand kids are still using my collection in another hundred years. Great video!!!

There is nothing better that these old Stanley's. The LN are nice, but they are basically overbuilt (unnecessarily) copies of the original. These are far superior when tuned even if they cost the same. I am talking about just the Plain Jane Bailey's - still an unbeatable design marvel.

Wow that's well and truly packed, better than getting smashed to pieces, I had two plane's delivered by Hermes the parcel company there in the UK , very well packed not as good as that , but the Hermes company Throw then in the back of the Van as someone Videoed them doing and very hard like they were having fun playing a game, but the company Hermes is impossible to contact as they don't answer Emails or messages on the Automated answering machine , so the Gentleman that packed yours did it right if you wanted to receive it in one piece that is, it's a long plane and that old would be a crime if it got broken , I have an absolute massive Collection of plane's as I started doing carpentry back in 1965 as a child and loved it all my life , the Stanley No 8 is hard to get hold of now days in good condition specially , that's a absolute beautiful you have there, best wishes from England.

@WoodenThingsAndStuff

It's a bit more of a hassle to use that page if you're in Canada, because lots of sellers say "Continental US only" for shipping, but this one came from Saskatchewan, and I had another come from Wisconsin. All prices are listed in USD, but unless they say they don't ship to Canada, they do. It can be pricey, though, so make sure you ask for a shipping quote before bidding.
