Leslie, Please do not feel confused or frustrated about your huge yarn library! I am 82 years young and have a HUGE library and keep buying all the time. I think of myself as a lifelong knitter-since 1954-and yarn buyer. I will never live long enough to knit all my wonderful yarn and I do not feel anything but joy when I look at or buy yarn! YAY! Let your goal go and love and enjoy your YARN-buy if you wish. Love it; enjoy it; be happy and content with it!! I love your podcasts and am sending you hugs from Virginia! ❤

I decided earlier this year that I'm just too old to feel guilty for enjoying things when it's not hurting anyone. I do try to be more intentional with what I buy also: this is a hobby. We all got into this for enjoyment and be happy and de-stress from the pressures of everyday life. I feel like we're constantly pressured to be MORE instead of being here, enjoying the moment, enjoying life, because life is too short and we can't control a lot of awful things that happen to us so why also control the rays of sunshine we get whenever we get them? So I fully agree with your mom and don't feel guilty. You have a beautiful stash that clearly makes you happy, and you make beautiful things with it. And I'll live vicariously through you watching all the beautiful yarn I can't get here lol

I feel like I have been down this road about stash several times. What I have come up with for my mental peace is that these goals are set with the intention of increasing happiness in the long run. Since I don’t have a crystal ball, I trust that my priorities are changing to honor that long term goal of happiness. I hate beating myself up over something that I created with good intent and I am no better for the torture.

I think it's high fiber knits that calls it the "Yarn Pantry"? I love that term because it feels like something you can stock up on as you need. Finding that molasses you bought ages ago for a baked good has the same good feeling as realizing you can instantly start a new project with something you already have. Pantries are also completely different in size too based on budget and space needs!

I am a compulsive buyer of craft materials-and not just yarn. Fortunately for me I am able to rotate between knitting, embroidery, pottery, scrapbooking and card making. I am also aware I don’t need 50 sweaters so I have stopped purchasing tons of yarn and will be doing some charity knitting and giving some of my craft supplies to senior centers. In today’s economic climate we should probably be mindful of unnecessary spending if our resources are tight. Do what gives you joy and share with others your beautiful projects if you feel guilty over too big a stash. You are a lovely young lady and I enjoy your podcast.

At some point I had to come to the realization that I cannot knit all the yarns I have. So I stopped buying yarn without purpose and gifted a lot of yarn. I also started knitting more and I am trying to get knit up a full sock drawer because I really wear only hand knit socks and wear them out fairly fast. I don’t want to stash down completely but have a stash that is not overwhelming and beyond life expectancy. Maybe because I am turning 60 soon, a stash beyond life expectancy is smaller then when I was younger. I like the word yarn library!

Where I’m at right now I don’t have the luxury of a stash (kids, finances, space ugh 😅) - I would say enjoy this moment for what it is. You may come to a place where you knit all of that up and love it! Or you may come to a place where you destash everything and love it! For today, just love the way it looks and the squish of that gorgeous yarn in your hands. You’ll get there, wherever “there” is.

So when I look at my shelves it doesn't have to be filled with omly skeins but also with the joy of the outcome and knitting. And gifting and donating also gives me great joy. Looking forward to hearing more of your journey.

It was honestly so reassuring to watch you have a bit of an existential crisis in real time, because I definitely had a similar moment looking at my own stash last year of, "Wait, I have yarn for HOW many pairs of socks? Who needs that many socks?!" I'm in a similar place of feeling overwhelmed occasionally but then looking through my yarn and being excited to eventually knit everything. So maybe having less will be a slower process than I originally hoped, but I'll enjoy that process and that's what matters!

It’s the same for me! Also yeah I have yarn for many many socks and sweaters and maybe I won’t need that many for myself but my best friends are having babies, also my brother and his wife are maybe trying for a baby soon, and it’s nice sometimes going through my stash and getting inspired to make something for someone else. I think of my big stash as a fountain of endless possibilities waiting for me so instead of being overwhelming it has become inspiring

I can totally identify with your feelings of being overwhelmed. I also have been trying to rename my stash. I have decided to call it my yarn store. I don’t have a very big of a yarn stash/library but I do relate to a lot of what you’re feeling with something I do tend to “overbuy” which is books! What I’ve realized is that because I can only read so quickly, I can get regular enjoyment from buying and curating my library and dreaming of the possibilities of what I may read someday. It’s not as big of a joy as finishing a good book, but it is another way I can enjoy the hobby of reading! I definitely have my moments where I despair at the fact that I won’t be able to read all the books I want to read in my lifetime and it stresses me out, but I try to focus on how awesome it is that there are so many creative people in the world and that I have the resources to have more that I’m excited about than I have time to do! I think with physical stuff like craft supplies it’s associated with a potential project/task and we feel the need to “use it up” on some level but the hand dyed skeins you collect are also their own works of art and color inspirations for you to enjoy separately from that. No shame, just yarn love!

I think this topic is very interesting. I believe as in everything in life, balance is key to finding happiness without feeling guilt and without accumulating stuff just for the sake of it, which ultimately will cause you issues. Of course we are all free to do what we want but there's a very fine line between buying yarn because it gives you joy and buying yarn just to hoard it which can potentially turn into an addictive circle. Personally, I think trying to let go of all of those goals you set at the beginning of the year is quite dangerous. Maybe adjust them a little to your current needs but buying without purpose often leads to hoarding and addictive behaviours that will become difficult to get rid off. Just some food for thought

But I get derailed by so many beautiful patterns and knots other ppl make, and great yarns they use. I just placed an order with purl soho, cannot resist a sale. But I do plan to slow down with acquisitions at least till I complete 2-3 projects.

Oh, my EKF National Parks order looked the same. Same size, and multiple orders because Ali left it open for "so long" LOL It is mostly planned out, though, so I'm perfectly OK with it, even if it was a pretty large order (for me). Let's enjoy the yarn and not fret about the number of skeins, as long as we still find them all super pretty - and if a skein isn't a must have anymore, then let it go, to a home where it will be a must have

I also have a goal of a net negative stash and I’m doing… okay 😂 I doubt I’ll achieve it but it does make me more intentional. And I think it’s fun to track and it’s not stressing me out at this point. For me, the only things that really matter are that I’m not spending beyond my means and that I have the space for it. And I have the money and the space so hooray! I also remind myself that knitting will be something I do for the rest of my life. It’s way past a casual interest at this point so I have many, many years to enjoy this yarn. I think it’s so cool seeing posts on instagram or ravelry of knitters grabbing yarn they’ve had for years to cast on a project after finally finding the perfect pattern. Shopping our yarn libraries/stores/stashes is so cool. And we can get inspiration from seeing all our different yarns and colors together and be creative in really fun ways! I like your moms advice!

If you can’t use it in the next decade/lifetime, it’s a collection. If it’s a usable quantity, then it’s a stash. That’s been my rule of thumb for the discussion about stash. Thank you for the video and the perspective. I personally am still working on my goal, which is to have more yarn out of my stash, then in my stash. I started the year at zero and then I just counted in and out the yarn so my goal is to be in the negatives. I count by grams and only count what I have finished using. My knitting bestie and I are bullet journalling to see how it goes and I’ll be doing a mid year wrap up at the end of the month of June. I am definitely in the positive but all of the items I have been tracking make me feel better knowing that I am using my yarn ( some nights I don’t knit being so burnt out from work) as I was worried, I was buying it for nothing. My goals are helping me they’re not giving me anxiety or anything like that which is why I’m going to keep them. I do worry a little bit at the end of the year as there is a yarn festival as well as I have advent calendars coming in, so they’ll definitely be adding to stash, it has stopped me from purchasing yarn that normally I would’ have. A lot of the yarn that I’ve purchased is for projects that I need right away(gifts) and as long as I can hold out the day of not purchasing something for instant gratification by the next day I’m good. I just need to stop getting sucked into buying more advent calendars. Haha!

I am a newer subscriber to your channel (also in California! 😊). Thank you for your honesty with us - I know that can’t be easy. I personally think that we should do what brings us joy. If that is shopping for yarn then so be it. As long as it doesn’t affect us negatively (like spending outside our ability or if it begins to affect our lives adversely, etc.) and then it’s for you to decide what you need to do for your own well being- not for anyone else to decide for you. I commend you for continuing the journey on self-evaluation. I’ve been trying to do this with myself. I very much enjoy the evolution and the balance it helps me bring to myself. It’s a constant work in progress though. So I do t see it as an end goal - just a tweaking here and there as I need. But I always keep the joy! 😂 Can’t wait to see your next one. 💕

I consider my yarn 'stash' emergency rations. Its for when I want to make something but can't get to a store. Or, I see a fiber/color I love and know I will want to use it in the future. I have a few colors and things I probably should destash, but my color loves go in cycles partly based on fashion trends. I have the space and don't need to destash for financial reasons either. I have been trying to be more intentional in purchases since I am a BIG impulse/emotional shopper. But, I definitely still add orders sometimes because I am upset and want that serotonin boost of buying something just for me. I don't count yarn as out until a project is complete. So I have a LOT of blanket wips and single socks, etc that if I finished them I'd have a big yardage out boost. Its not top of my priority list. Its a hobby, it should be enjoyable. And, I am trying to keep it that way

If you want to stop buying yarn stop looking at the websites. If you keep looking at new yarn just accept that you will be buying more yarn than you will ever use. Maybe you should seriously look at why you are buy the amount of yarn you are if it bothers you. Simply dismissing the buying keeps you from addressing issues that this may be hiding. I think most of us or just me that I have FOMO when indie dyers release preorders. In my head I think “oh if I skip this preorder will they dye this color way in the future?” Or I tell myself to just purchase one color way that I really really love. Then boom another collection comes out and I’m like damn I want that too. I’m not going to lie but I enjoy the packages when they arrive and I get the endorphins of “ yay!! Pretty yarn” but I’m just putting them away until a new pattern is publish or a pattern that suits my style. As I am writing this…EFK next week release 🤔🤔🤔🤔 and I’m trying to see which box do I really really want. 🫣. At the end the day once I hit that buy button…the colors that they dye always bring a warmth to my soul and after 8 hrs of work I’m always excited to just come home and knit on my projects and to see the gradual growth of each knit. Great episode can’t wait for the next.

Good morning, While I started my morning out casting on a sock, I listened to you repeatedly agonize over your burning need to buy yarn. You buy yarn without a plan sometimes. That's a decision but there can be consequences to that, the worst one being you may find a perfect pattern for a certain yarn purchased on a whim without definite plan but your purchase left you short on skeins for that perfect pattern. Then you may have to scour yarn sites looking for that yarn and guess what? The peace of knitting evaporates into anxiety over acquiring more of the same yarn, and a chance its going to be discontinues or...SHRIEK it was discontinued. OUT OF STOCK! SNAP....ok switch gears and lower your expectation for that perfect look and wardrobe addition for the said yarn and find another pattern that will never excite you as much as your 1st choice. Its a conundrum! You will likely shelve the yarn while you go back into decision mode! Or worse, you could discover moths have invaded your stash. Well...that could solve how to get rid of some of your stash! (NOT!) You mentioned you are very analytical. 🤔 That is a great quality if you have a job that requires it but what I see is you really need to be more STRATEGIC!!!!! 🤷 You will knit up sweaters and in your current circumstance of having to work for a living you will never use your stash up due to time constraints. Yes, you mentioned your stash goal is dead so at least you are grounded in reality! But maybe you need to adjust your buying habits, 1st of all remembering that if you pass up what seems like a yarn your heart wants to have, your brain should tell your heart there will be other yarns you like even more!!!!! That couldn't be more true! Another solution is prioritize the yarns you have in your stash as Must knit, Nice to Knit and Will NOT Knit. The NOT Knit pile (and you really need to be honest with your self) needs to be used as perhaps the following categories: Yarn Giveaways on your KZitem, Donate to some worthy cause, or Sell it at a discounted rate so It will move on. Then, here is a new strategy.......any future purchases for sweater quantities must be very high quality yarns 🤗 and varied colorways, not just too many pink to burgundy colorways. The high quality yarns will cost you a lot more but I think the satisfaction of knitting a high quality fiber into a garment that you will wear for years is better than knitting a boatload of low cost yarn garments that stay folded on your closet shelf and will keep you from over-purchasing stuff you can't possibly knit or wear. Also, as time goes by you will discover that yarns you once thought were super-duper turn into white elephants you no longer care to knit. Why not invest your precious time in fewer high quality sweaters? You have the knitting expertise dialed in now with your exceptional knitting quality so your garments will be top notch!. There is more reward in that approach. So hope I gave you some food for thought and you will be more strategic in your choices/decisions. At least you are young and have years ahead to knit. I look forward to seeing what your projects are that you have decided to knit and you share those projects with us out in your virtual audience! Sorry I got on such a long tangent....at least the day is still young. Happy knitting- Carrie from the San Francisco Bay Area. 🥰🌹🐑🍵🧶
