I picked up rock for a tank from an LFS that’s been closed down for 10 years. I soaked the rock in RO water in a bucket with a powerhead for 2 days. I dumped it out sprayed it off filled a bucket back up with RO let it soak for two more days dumped it sprayed it off soaked it again and after six days total then I added it to my system. Having “clean rock “to start will really help your tank and not hinder it. (Scrubbed the rock with a tooth brush too. I ended up with around 80 ppm for nitrates even after all that once my tank cycled. I ended up doing an 80% water change and I’ve been good ever since. Stay with it! Don’t give up!

🤯 that explains alot. Is there a way to pull the nitrates out of rock without breaking down the tank?

Dear God!!! I got my Saltwater aquarium water tested and it's at 186 ppm nitrates and 3.4 ppm phosphates. It's all my fault as I neglected the tank and used city tap water instead of RO/DI to top off eveporated water, used pellets instead of frozen fish food, and neglected doing water changes. This went on for a couple of years as I was dealing with my mental health not being in a good state. Now I'm working on getting things right now as I've resumed water changes with RODI and cleaning up the sump with Chato. I can't believe this happened but now I'm on the road to getting my saltwater aquarium back on track. Thanks

Hey Travis, just saw your video, what if indeed it is the rock, what is the approach? Slowly change out the rocks or let the leach out continue until it stops? If indeed it is the rock, what is the approach to get the extra stuff out or is it to be considered “bad” forever?

You could try “storming” the tank by taking a small powerhead or turkey baster and try to blow out all of the detritus locked up in the rock as well as the sand. Then do a large water change after this. (At least that’s what I would do)

There was a guy that never changed out his sock since the start. It took 7 months till he asked if that was the problem of his high nutrients.

I've been fighting the Nitrates problem ever since I started this hobby 15 years now and still can't lower my nitrates to 5ppm at all. I do water changes every week and still, have my nitrates around 15 to 25 ppm. I have about 90 lbs of live rock what would I have to do, replace all of it? My tank is a reef and fish 90 gallons.

I want sps so bad but nutrient control is apparently something I can't get right smh half tempted to just have a rockless and fish less frag type tank to have some sps lol maybe I could keep nitrates and phosphate in check that way lmao
