Selling my ADS L710's was a mistake, and I regretted it as soon as they left. When I put them on Craigslist with a bunch of other good vintage equipment for a garage sale, I had a guy drive an hour and arrive early to buy them before anyone else showed up. I had them set up to demo with a NAD 7155 when he rolled up. We listened for a nice long time while I brought out and wired up my other sale stuff. His absolute joy helped me get over my melancholy. I still have a great little walnut set of ADS 300's (not the L300) in a near-field setup over my workbench. The clarity and richness of those little boxes have amazed me for decades. And they look just cool.

On the plus side, a/d/s speakers usually used a rubber surround and so they wouldn't rot out like foam surround speakers. On the negative side, as mentioned here, that sticky damping material on the dome mids and tweeters not only tended to collect dust and lint but would over time migrate and settle towards the bottom edge of the surround and I would imagine that this might affect its dispersion or frequency characteristics. Early versions of the Dahlquist DQ10 used an Advent woofer. They could sound good in the right room with the right equipment driving them, but they were inefficient, very fussy to set up and fussy about amplification, and the open metal mesh grill over the back allowed dust, lint and pet hair to settle on the drivers and crossover. PS, its not ADS, its a/d/s. Back in the early 1980s I had their 2001 automobile sound system in my car, consisting of their biamped mini speakers and an added subwoofer box ( Dynaudio 10's) that I built, driven by an Audiomobile preamp EQ and subwoofer amp, and a Nakamichi 250 tape deck.

I still have my pair of AR-3a speakers from 1970. They sold for $250.00 Each at the time or $500.00 a pair. They are a classic speaker. Before AR came out with the AR-LST, one of their "blurbs" was: "This is the best speaker we know how to make". The entire AR line sounded amazingly similar with the trade-offs as you went lower in price was more roleoff at low frequencies and less dispersion of the midrange and high frequencies, but the character of the sound remained the same.

I'm 71 and have tried a lot of low cost "audiophile" speakers. (Acoustat 2+2, Apogee stage, B&W 801,DM6, DCM QED, Cerwin-Vega, Infinity, Magnaplanar, etc.) and the initial focus was bass. However, in my 30's I discovered "imaging" and the race was on. Imaging is everything. When the experience turns into a razor sharp "surround" sound, frequency response, base, etc. become almost unimportant. When you get a better imaging set, it's time to listen to all your records again to heard things you never heard before - it can be quite dramatic. The Champion so far is a set of Phase Research Tower R's - a 6" transmission line 2-way that has so many design tweaks they look experimental. The tweeter was in a tunnel supported by a "fin'. This tunnel was recessed about 2" back from the woofer cabinet. So I thought, Gee that flat surface should be reflecting sound upward and blurring the imaging. So I laid a terry cloth towel on that top edge - and it totally destroyed the imaging! Whoever designed these speakers knew things - I've never seen other speakers employ many of the bizarre things done to these.

@@burlingtonbill1 I think I had the 2's and always wanted the 3's. However the Apogee Stage were like fireworks when listening to brass - you could "hear" the metal of the horns - something you experience live. I can't imagine what the Diva's were like. The 2+2's were a bit of a letdown, but back in the day, they were like ultra futuristic science fiction. Opus One in Pittsburgh was loaded with that stuff including the Advent 7' VideoBeam Projection TV of which I owned about 6 and at one time had 4 in my house.

You may have to use the "WayBack" machine, but it's worth the effort. Years ago, while working at a HiFi shop, we took most of these models in on trade, and 35 years later, I still have my L780 Mark II's, L810's, many of the ADS bookshelf models, and the classic AR's. I loved my L810s so much that when a guy mentioned that a pair of 910s (no "L" designation, since they were originally built as studio mains) had a seller on eBay from my state, I jumped on them. Turned out, I missed that they were selling for $900-each. I immediately messaged back saying I was very sorry but I couldn't afford them, but that I felt they were easily worth it. That was the magical phrase, as the seller had been bombarded with low-ballers and cranks, so he sold the pair to me for $1000, including his time and gas to drive to my place. Two weeks later, the seller drove 2+ hours, each way, to deliver them to my house, as I don't drive and he didn't want the stands or cabinets possibly damaged via shipping. I am eternally grateful to that very generous man! As for how to 910s sound compared to the L810s; instruments come out of the drivers much larger than before. Dual-10.5" bass drivers inside their own enclosures inside the cabinets, and the exact same mid/tweet as the L810s. 28htz-25khtz/93db/4ohm/130lbs-each w/stands. The 910s are my end-gamer loudspeakers.

On floor stands, they're the front speakers in my home theater setup. Running them with an Onkyo TX-RZ50. BTW, in an apartment on the second floor, there must be no sound leakage to the walls or down the floor, or risk evicton. Being acoustic suspension, the sound stays in front and within the room. With Dirac Live room correction and bass driver crossover set at 75 Hz, they sound like I have a subwoofer. There is none.

However having said that, their low end is a misleading and required plenty of practice to prevent ending up with tubby bass during multitracking and/or mixing and mastering. But still wonderful speakers. I really do appreciate the ADS L810’s design. Two drivers that are placed so closely together increases the total SPL output by a factor of four. And is very efficient!

Looking at the "ugly" speakers reminded me of how speaker manufacturing is not glamorous! A college friend from Norwood MA worked at the AR factory as a summer job in high school (70s) - was not a fun job. I looked at working at Beveridge Labs in Santa Barbara around 1979 where they made their electrostatics - kind of scary. Much better to listen to! This is a fun trip down memory lane. I used to have two sets of Electro-Voice bookshelves - very good sound for an inexpensive two-way - the ETR-14s (8" woofer) and ETR-16s (10" woofer) driven by my Harmon-Kardon quad receiver!

The great mystery about the ADS (L710 and) L810 is that even with the original crossover capacitors, they are, as you said, one of the best-sounding speakers available. Yet, there appears to be nothing like them (new) currently on the market. The newer ADS L1090 and L1290 are nice too. Similar, and also nice sounding are the B+O Beovox M75 and M100. If you could ever line up all 6 of them, a comparison would be interesting. My question is whether they sound so good because they have a soft dome mid-range? In the L710 & L810 it only goes from 550 to 4k Hz, however the L1090 & L1290 have a wider range mid-range which goes from 500 to 5k Hz - a whole decade; so they may sound even better. Have you compared the ADS L810 with the B+O BeoVox M100? The B+O has the extra 'Phase-Link' speaker and all the drivers are the same polarity.

I find your review of personal favorite speakers to 100% mirror my own. I feel the ADS line of speakers were possibly the best speaker ever built. I loved every pair I owned. Are they better than some of the speakers that are out there today? No but, they are damn close and do stand toe to toe with speaker 5-7x their price point of around $1000 dollars today and as far as clear balanced sound they will embarrass many though they did demand some power and were not a speaker to have if you wanted glass cracking volume at 89db sensitivity. But balance amazing, clarity amazing. I did notice you said they were 4ohm. I don't know if they had different ohm deliverance packages or if that changed over the years. The Speakers I got in 1982 were rated at 6 ohm. Anyway great review and spot on list of my personal favorites also. The only one I would add or consider is the DBX Soundfield series I loved those as well.

Given the similarities in the cabinet and enclosure I'm curious about the JBL L65 Jubals' brother, the L55 Lancer circa 1973 and later. They also feature a 14" woofer(the LE 14 I believe) with a cone tweet and two way crossover network. Contemporary specs state the L55 can be sufficiently powered by as little as 10 watts/channel into an 8 ohm load. With ideas of refurbishing my Marantz 2215b the novelty of hooking it up with L55s is intriguing albeit maybe a bit impractical, especially given how expen$ive they're getting nowadays yet I wonder...

I’m so mad, I gave away my AR3a’s paired with a marantz 2275 receiver. I’ve never had anything come close to sounding as good as they did.

Great video have you ever heard of a company called Ral 3000? I think they're from the mid-to-late 70s three-way with a front facing Bass port Liquid cool Twitter with a crossover adjustment knob on the front.

I run my systems with the loudness button on and bass & treble max unless im listening higher than 40% volume then i will turn the bass down just enough to cut the distortion.

Could be wrong about all this, and maybe its because 8" depth on the A400's is so much smaller then 41 tall and 21 wide, so it looks worse here than it actually is, but it looks like those drivers might not have any room at all to spare for mounting depth after the baskets and magnets

You should listen to some Diatone speakers. They sound excellent.

I own the ADS 810, 710, and 1290. These are the finest speakers the world has ever known. As good as the 810 sound, the slightly smaller 710 sound even better. Close your eyes and you would swear you’re listen to the actual musical instruments, including the human voice, and not a pair of speakers. The sound experience of the 710 and the larger 1290 is exactly the same, despite the very different enclosure design. The only audible difference is the power handling ability. The early version of the 810 is a bit bass heavy, to the very critical listener (which is shocking for ADS, to color in any way the sound). ADS fixed this issue in the L810, and even apologized in a note to customers, explaining that the crossover values had changed slightly, to accommodate an improved design in the tweeter. Probably the main reason for the phenomenal, “transparent” sound is that, unlike other top speaker companies, they made all of their own drivers, from the ground up. If you find a pair, and they have not been worked on (opened up), then you have reached the top of the mountain.

Early on in the video you mentioned the RTR speakers (pictured were the model 300D). Just curious if you gave them a serious listen. I've had 2 pairs over the last 35 years and am still amazed at their build and quality. RTR produced drivers for many brands (I believe AR was one of them) and their early series were very good sounding.

Not sure which year you had or listened to, but I have owned a pair of A400's for 15 years. They have 6.5" mids and two 8" woofers and the specs are listed at the top of rhe cabinet. 4 ohms, not 8 ohms and a 90 db rating, though it could be that they print the room value for efficiency on the cabinet. Maybe the specs changed from the earlier first year to later years? I will check what year if any is on my speakers.

Interesting you name your channel Skylabs and like ADS speakers. Coincidentally, the founder of ADS, Dr. Godehard Guenther was recruited from Germany to work for NASA's Skylab project.

I loved the ionofanes with ionic tweeter....you cannot listen to a normal mass tweeeter after that ,ithas so much resolution and airiness....only Ess comes close....and todays amt's...my favourit its the beyma tpl150... 100 db/1w efficient ,run it back open in dipole...with a fane studio 8m...or any good sounding mid....ad some 15" or 18" bass , filter simple passif or actif...and you are close to the real dynamics ...
