How's the performance? I've been seriously considering this for some time....

There is a slight improvement as against the original system considering my existing rails were still as new with no paint wear. However the big thing is that the HIWIN’s will last and be trouble free for a long time to come without needing any adjustment. That was my main motivation for installing them and I am really pleased I did.

I was thinking of printing U Channel in fdm , do you think it’s strong enough?

Honestly I cant answer that as I have 0 experience with FDM. All I can say if you want to be guaranteed of the best strength then no 3D printed U-Chanel will come close to Extruded Aluminum.

I've given it some thought and I'm finally getting around to installing rails into my Predator, but I figured out what I think is a better way and I thought I would share in case someone else wants to try this or is having trouble finding the right size U channel for a decent price. What I've come up with is the use steel flat bar instead for the rail mount, drill and tap holes into the steel flat bar that matches the hole spacing on the rail, drill holes into the extrusion that matches the hole spacing on the rails, slip the flat bar into the tower extrusions and use the flat bar to clamp the rails to the tower extrusions. For me at least, this will be a lot cheaper, around 25 USD minus the rails and the tools needed. It will have fewer parts, hopefully take less labor, and maybe even be a bit more durable. Granted any added durability vs using U channel is not a huge factor considering how low the forces are, you could probably get away with just drilling and tapping directly into the 2mm thick aluminum tower extrusions, but I'm not into gambling with things like that.

Interesting idea and I can see its potential. For me I would replace the steel with extruded Aluminium of the appropriate dimensions.

I appreciate you sharing, there is one thing that is bugging me though. Where did you get that effector plate? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Unfortunately you wont find it as I made it myself. I have in the works a new video showing how I adapted a clone Mosquito Hotend and the effector plate along with photos and drawings etc. Should be posted in a week or so.

@@hamrx8 Ha, well that explains that. Looks good, very professional. Now I want to get a CNC router then lol. They aren't terribly expensive these days. Probably just end up printing a new effector out of nylon or PC. I'm personally leaning towards getting a dragon high flow hotend myself, though a mosquito clone also looks like an good option.

@@creamofbotulismsoup9900 I am posting a new video soon of how I made an effector to install a clone Mosquito on to my Predator. All drawings and STLs will then be posted on my website. You might find it interesting. I have three upcoming videos two relating to the Predator. Oh btw a CNC is a great addition to a 3D printer as there are things you can only do on a CNC.

Do you think 40x20x2 U-channel extrusion is enough and can build with your instructions? Cant find 3mm thick U-channel in europe.

For the sides 2mm would be ok but for the base that the rails secure to you would have to modify the machining to allow for the nuts that are 2mm thick so they would protrude above the surface. However some spacers could be used to take care of that.

Oh yeah, the back side of the aluminium extrusion needs to be complete flat or at least in same level. Found some of that u-rail from germany, hopefully they will send that to Finland. Thank you for great video. So those M3 T nuts are 2mm thick or less?
