Project Failure
1. What is it?
project that fails to perform a duty or. an expected action, non-occurrence or non-performance”
A project becomes a failure when it does not deliver the agreed upon value on budget and time
70% of all projects fail according to PMI
Organizations that don’t value PM, experience this the most with over 50% of their projects failing
This has an organizational cost associated with it: 9.9% of every dollar is wasted due to poor performance. Worldwide, companies waste $1 million dollars every 10 seconds as a result of ineffective implementation of business strategy
1. Why does it happen?
Project failure can happen in any organization and to any project. There are an infinite number of reasons for failure. Sometimes it’s out of the control of a project manager and/or the team members. Sometimes failure is controllable. Failed projects and people involved with the failure have some things in common. In both cases they are given prescriptions for “quick fixes” which typically prove to be ineffective and can sometimes produce disastrous side effects.
Discenza, R. & Forman, J. B. (2007). Seven causes of project failure: how to recognize them and how to initiate project recovery. Paper presented at PMI® Global Congress 2007-North America, Atlanta, GA. Newtown Square, PA: Project Management Institute.
7 main reasons project fail broken down into 3 broad categories:
1. People -managing & motivating people for optimal performance, provide team members tools & techniques to product consistently success projects
2. Process - establish clear accountability for measured results (project, benefits, criteria), consistent process for managing unambiguous checkpoints, consistent methodology for planning & executing projects)
3. Communications - focus on business value, not technical details (i.e. clear link between the project and the strategic needs), include the customers at the beginning of the project and throughout
Shaker, K. (2010). Why do projects really fail? PM Network, 24(7), 20-21.
1. Poor alignment
2. Bad planning
3. Lack of executive support
4. Incomplete requirements
5. Unclear expectations
6. Scope creep
7. Lack of resources
8. Choice of technology
9. Inexperience
PMI says “lack of clear goals is the most common factor for project failure” at 37%
1. What I’ve learned from my experience/What to do if this happens to you
Don’t take it personally, you alone realistically could not have changed the outcome
Take the time to do a deep dive into the failures, the paper specifies using interviews, surveys to understand from different angles why the project failed
Implement lessons learned into future projects so your organization does not repeat the same failures (that would be the true failure)
Specific to software: there needs to be clear boundaries with what the software is expected to do and if it does not, what’s the plan to fix it, its only reasonsable to expect so many “workarounds” until finally the software just doesn’t work and is bug ridden
If you’re a software PM or going to work in tech, you need to understand the technology of the company you’re going to work for and how mature of a product is it.
