I’ve only tasted the preserved fruits of Bayberries from China in the Philippines when I was in grade school called “Champuy “ . Loved the flavor and texture and still popular and can be bought easily In Manila Chinatown

If you grow them from seed, it's very common for many seedlings to grow for a while and then wilt away. I've read that using a mineral mix with little organic matter helps. I have a few seedlings in a mostly Lechuza PON mix and so far the majority have pulled through. You can also inoculate the roots with Frankia bacteria after they reach a certain size, so they can fix nitrogen. You can find Frankia nodules at the roots of Alnus trees.

Probably would be best to put it in a sheltered location with lots of mulch. May need winter protection as the tree comes from areas that don’t get too cold in winter.

I’ve learned that Bayberries or Myrica Rubra can be grafted to warm growing Myrica Californica or cold growing Myrica Pennsylvanica( zone 2-5).

Hey Ben, Where did you order the young Yangmei tree? I ordered some in China. When they arrived, they dried out and died. Not sure why? Shipping them all way from China, and few leaves, but they dried out.

I stayed in China for a year 2011-2012 and ate gobs of yangmei, especially in the south. I couldn't get enough of them. Though I remember them being bigger than the ones in this video - more like golf ball size.

I went to China and had them over the summer. Most delicious berry I've ever had. And I can attest to them being closer to golf ball sized. Maybe his tree was too small when he first tasted them?

Myrica rubra Growing Condition Regarding soils, they like slightly acid 4 - 5.5pH. They are growing very well on the red earth soil type and are virtually leaping out of the ground. Most coffee varieties are acidic, with an average pH value of 4.85 to 5.10. Light roasted coffee beans; only one per month; place on top of soil at least 1 inch away from tree trunk. Coffee high in nitrogen = plant food = earlier fruit production; more fruit production; larger fruit production; NO coffee taste! Suggest plant entire fruit; fruit acts as embryo for fruit .. providing acidity, moisture, & nutrition for seed down in the soil (think: if no humans existed..). FYI (HOW TO CULTIVATE FRUIT TREES & PLANTS FROM YOUR GROCERY; Amazon books)

I don't know why more people don't grow unusual fruits. I think yours is an alpine fruit, grows at highish elevations, so it never gets too hot. Does get snow. They're all over the place in Longsheng (Guangxi) and up into the mountains of Hunan.
