My 11-year-old niece, Makenzie, stayed with us over the 4th-July weekend. It didn't take her long to find her way into the train-room ... and then I couldn't get her to leave (not that I tried very hard - um, at all).
She is seen in this video making bushes and driving trains. Although she did drive more than just the one train, she kept coming back to the new 2-6-0 because of the sound chip. What was a little surprising was that she wanted to do a lot of switching instead of just watching the trains run. Although I had the flap down for the continuous run option, she never made more than one complete circuit at a time.
I was impressed with how quickly she learned the control panel, and her ability to select an appropriate speed. Once, she got too many cars on the train and stalled on the 1.8% main-line grade, so I fired up the other throttle for some helper action.
As the video shows, she did the driving while I uncoupled for her. On the second day, I left her alone to do everything for a while. It was about an hour before she came looking for me (she had derailed the locomotive and couldn't get it back on the track).
We didn't have enough time to do everything we wanted to, but it was a lot of fun. This all goes to show that boys aren't the only kids who appreciate trains.
