I used to have a collection of penmanship books. My favorite was one that featured a vertical style, I don’t remember what it was called. If I remember correctly the lower case letter p was open a the bottom similar to a letter h . My collection got damaged while in storage. A great loss to me because most from the late 1800s.

Thank you for the book recomandations, in my language we have the letters æ ø å Is there another Spencerian book with examples for the Norwegian alpabeth letters æ ø å 🤷♂️🔎
@adonishtar
3 жыл бұрын
The ø and å shouldn't be too different from the normal 'o' and 'a'. You just add the extra marks, much like the accent marks for French. The tricky one is æ. I'd try to just connect an 'a' and 'e' together. Just my thoughts.

Oh man if you ask 3 people how they should hold the pen you'll get 5 answers.. just hold the pen however is comfortable for you in a way that you can achieve beautiful letters. Good luck!!

I am considering getting the spencerian book with the 5 copybooks, i think copybooks will be a great way to improve. I am exclusively doing this with the intent to do calligraphy. Can I use ink and a dip pen on the copybooks or is it not meant for that? Is there a spencerian book where you you use a dip pen and ink?
@OpenInkStand
3 жыл бұрын
It's a great book, but the paper quality might not be suitable for dip nib and ink. You can buy the book but do your practice on better quality paper.

I own the Specerian books, but I haven't started using them because I'm not sure what kind of pen to use. Should I practice with an extra fine pen, or should I jump straight into learning with an oblique nib? If I start with a regular pen, will I be able to switch to an oblique nib easily? Or would it be best to practice with my intended writing instrument? Thanks for any advice!
@OpenInkStand
4 жыл бұрын
If you are unfamiliar with an oblique penholder, I would recommend starting with a fine pen or pencil. As long as you start your foundation with good letterforms, you should be able to transition to an oblique penholder and nib with less trouble. Doing it the other way round might be too frustrating for a beginner!
