I love Hamburg. It’s so open to everyone and it always makes me smile. It’s so green and the buildings are not the ugly sky scrapers that make you feel so small. There’s water and bridges everywhere. The people are nice and friendly even if they appear to be rough. The people in Hamburg take the German bluntness to the next level… but in a friendly and not mean way. Very straight forward. If you’re prepared for it you’ll understand what I mean and even might love it.

I hate Hamburg. Arrogant people. They identify as Hamburgers first and Germans second. No amazing skyscrapers, cold, utilitarian, ugly, boring architecture. A city stuck in it's forgotten glory of the past. Hamburg is a disgrace and it would be no loss if it would separate from the German mainland and sink into the north sea, never to be seen again. Hamburg is in the same league of shamefulness as Bavaria. I am sure everyone can imagine what a pain and embarrassment it is to admit that Hamburg and Bavaria are still part of Germany.

Two things everyone visiting (or of course living) in Hamburg should know. One: It never rains in Hamburg, there is just sometimes a bit of wet air around. And Two: It's never cold. It's just maybe the wrong clothing you are wearing. With that in mind, Hamburg is and will always be the most beautiful city in Germany.

I guess that's because Hamburg has so many beautiful spots that you can see plenty and still miss many! I've been living here for nearly 50 years now and am still constantly discovering beautiful spots all over the place! There is a regional TV show here where they have a weekly segment called "I've never been to..." and then one of the 100+ Hamburg districts is shown to that person who has never been to ... by another person who lives in ... ! It's amazing what parts of Hamburg have not been seen by people who have been living here for decades or even are natives. That said, you are asking a lot from an in Schwäbisch Hall living American who is here for a few days... 😉

I'm born and raised in (near) Hamburg and this city is by far my favourite in Germany. Since the last Hamburg-video i was pretty sure, Nalf should be drowned in the Hamburg harbour. But miracles happen and Nalf finally did my hometown right. And at the end of the video, still unsure "drown him or not?" he said goodbye in one of two possible proper ways in Hamburg. One is "Tschüß" may be nothing for american tongues, the other is "Moin". Not "Moin, Moin" which is unnecessary gossiping 😉 Nalf earned my pardon and if we ever should meet i invite you eating a "Fischbrötchen" or "Original Labskaus" with me Hummel, Hummel!

Alex Restaurant is a good place to eat, but it is very busy. Hamburger Meile is cool, and Landungsbrücken too. (Which he went to) The Speicherstadt is where the Miniatur Wunderland is located. There, you can view the world on miniature, from Brazil to Italy. The Elbphilarmonie and Hagenbects Tierpark are also pretty cool. The AEZ in Poppenbüttel is also very nice. Sometimes, the Hamburger Dom (Amusment Park) is open and it is also very cool.

At least out of the bigger cities. Some smaller ones are beautiful too, but don't have that much to offer. I would say it is in the top 5 of europe. And the weather really is the most annoying part. Sweet video! Very nice! In the old times, I believe that the Hamburg area was in the Saxon part. Southern Jutland in Denmark (and northernmost Germany) was in the Anglian area (a big Danish tribe). Both tribes went to England (together with the Jutes in northernmost Jutland (Denmark) to conquer that country. The Jutes took Kent, and the areas in England ending in -ex was taken by the Saxons. The Anglian Danes took much of the rest (except Wales and Scotland). We talk about around 400 to 600 AD. Then the Vikings came to England from Norway/Denmark in 792 AD... and took it once more...

Well, I'm glad you came around on Hamburg, my hometown (even though I now live in the US). One slight correction, though. Hamburg was not founded in 1189, it's several hundred years older. In 1189, Hamburg got its free port charta from Emperor Barbarossa. At least that's the legend, but it might be a few years off. A free port is crucial, as it allows imports to be split up, repackaged etc. without any taxes or duties as long as those wares then get exported again and never leave the free port area ('Freihafen'). So without that charta, Hamburg would never have become such an important and wealthy trading center. So, yes, 1189 is probably more important than whatever year the town was founded in. And it is the date that gets celebrated annually in the 'Hafengeburtstag' festival.

Just wait, now that you're warmed up with Hamburg, you are going to fall in love the next time you visit. Hamburg does that to people. It doesn't welcome anyone with open arms, it doesn't have the picturesque charme of Munich or the wild anarchy of Berlin, but it sneaks into your heart and bones once you open your eyes to it's own beauty. The water, the many parks, the culture and history and - not the least - the people... I still miss Hamburg after 20 years in exile, to me it will always be "die schönste Stadt der Welt".

hey Nalf, the JvM (THE LÄND) Ciro here. finally you changed your opinion about germanys most beautiful city. i have lived here for many years and i have to tell you that the weather here is better than its reputation. half my family lives in the south and i have a direct comparison. it's usually nicer here in the north:)

That's right. I also lived in Munich for a few years and it was super rainy, while in Hamburg the weather was fine.

So funny. Hamburg is also THE cursed city for me. In 6 visits I had problems with the hotel reservation 4 times, 3 train cancellations, I lost my keys, a taxi driver tried to scam me and except for one stay it was rainy every time. Hamburg hates me T_T

As a former 14-year-long resident of Hamburg I feel happy that this beautiful city has redeemed itself in your eyes. This might invite some discussion, but many who have travelled Germany consider Hamburg one of the two most desirable metropolises in the country, next to Munich. If I might be so bold, feel free to show off your German language skills while speaking to Laura. ;-)

6:30 ff - actually i can read it fluently, its english backwards. When i was a teenager, i liked to speak backwards a lot (in german, of course, but it also gives a good training).

I'm from Bavaria, but studied in Kiel and I love the North! Would like to live there again.
