You came up with a pretty good solution to a common problem with that rack. I even called Yakima before seeing this video, and they didn't have an answer to solve it. Thanks for posting this!

I'm thinking of getting this rack for my jk. Here's a thought. Why not drill all the way through and just put a quick release pin through it.

That's a good idea. Great for people who don't carry a tool kit with them like I do. I just used parts I had on hand. Thanks for watching.

Great video and review. I have been contemplating getting this spare rack after returning the Thule rack. That rack wasn't stable and constantly made ratlling noise when I commuted without a bike on it. Can you tell me if the Yakima Sparetime also rattles with vibrating noise? Thanks

GREAT mod to fix, how is it holding up? fix the problem completely? did you ever think about one screw through instead of two? or is that a problem with the red knob?

+Branden Brooks The problem was the red knob coming loose. I thought about the "thru bolt" method but didn't do it simply because I had the screws in my stash of hardware. The thru method would be better overall, but would require a little more removal and set up of the components. I always carry a tool kit in my jeep so the nut driver made sense to me. For "tube carry" rack it's a great rack all in all. Until they make a spare tire mounted rack that holds the bike via the wheels in lieu of the tube, this will be my favorite rack.

great! glad to hear, I love Yakima racks and had a hitch rack for my JK but couldn't access back so it was useless basically. definitely will be investing in this rack and immediately doing the mod you did. Thanks!

so, when you get a flat tire and don't have a drill to remove those screws, how do you remove the rack to get the spare tire off.....?
@DominicWilbrink

+Jake Lehner Easy... I always keep a tool kit in my jeep. Mostly because I like to take off the doors and top and you need a tool kit to put on the temporary mirrors. Thanks for watching, keep the rubber side down.

you could just use a through pin and split pin to lock it on similar to a tow hitch t that way its tool less removal and it will stop it from falling off over time

It looks like someone can simply remove the spare tire lugnuts and steal the whole rack and spare tire?

I didn't see the lockonut that will help, otherwise it seems like they can just remove the wheel with a socket and take the whole thing.

Yeah, the locknut is what locks it in place. At the end of the day, I think that if someone’s going to steal it they’re going to steal it. This will just them slow them down. No matter what rack you use that’s always a risk you take when taking your bike out in public. Thanks for watching dude!

What model is this rack?

It's a SpareTime rack. Yakima has replaced it with the SpareRide rack. It still has the same method of connecting to the spare tire, but an updated design for mounting the bikes. Overall it's still functionally the same. Than6 for watching.
