Hi Ronnie, thank you so much for this video. The guideline is pretty helpful and makes sense! I am an English teacher in China who's trying to solve the same problem with teaching pronunciations. The question I have is about longer words - when longer words come into play, we have to deal with stressed and non-stressed vowels, and even the same vowel in stressed syllables can have totally different pronunciations. I wonder how we can categorise that and make the whole reading system more systematic? Anyways, this is a comment from 5 years later haha. But your video definitely helped me a lot. Maybe I should take pronouncing longer words from pronouncing short ones first. (teach - teacher, the "e" is the same sound though the length changes.) Anyways, thank you again!!

Hello Ronnie! What if a word has more than one vowel? Example: encounter
@elizabethnapier8168
4 жыл бұрын
Read each syllable as it's own word. In your example, encounter, the "en" would be a short vowel, "count" has a dipthong (ou) (pronounced like "ow" when someone pinches you), and "er" is an ending suffix using an r-controlled vowel.
@lekos225
4 жыл бұрын
@@elizabethnapier8168 Wha do you mean with an r-controlled? Is it a short sound? According to Ronnie, "if you have two vowels in the word, for example: "a" and "e", we're going to say the first vowel like it sounds like in the alphabet, so "a". We're going to say: "ba", and we do not say: "bak-e"; we say "bake"(/beɪk/). So, the first vowel is going to sound like the alphabet: "bake". What about this one? We don't say: "fah-me", like "ah"; we say: "fame"(/feɪm/). And, again, we don't say the last vowel in the word. So, this works with two-vowel words. The "a" we pronounce like an "a" /eɪ/, and the "e" or the second vowel is silent". What I want to know is, will a vowel sound like the alphabet in a word with more than one vowel? Example, allophonic

I thought the singular (unpaired) vowel being the short vowel version and the paired (with the silent "e" on the end of the sentence) being the long vowel version was common knowledge. I was taught this "rule" in elementary school. What is new to me is that any paired vowel creates a long vowel. Of course, we know there are more than just 10 vowel sounds in English, so this has limited application.
@magzcan26
2 жыл бұрын
Yes this has limited application. I think it’s easier to say if you have two vowels together it changes the sound. Sometimes it can make the first vowel a long sound but not always. It would be better to teach vowel pairs. Like ai, ei, ie, ea, ou, oi, oa, oo, ou, ee, etc. That’s how we learned it in school. We also learned the long vowel with the silent e in school. And you have y as a vowel sometimes as well.
@jacejensen2541
2 жыл бұрын
@@magzcan26 That is an interesting concept looking at specific vowel pairs. I took the first one you mentioned "ai". I, myself, would have thought it would be pronounced the same as "I" and "eye", as it is in words like "Chai" and "Thai". But it is commonly pronounced with an "eɪ" as in "aid", "aim", "rain", "wait", & "tail'. Or it is reduced to "ɛə" before the letter "r" in words like "fair" and "air". However, there are certain outliers such as "mountain", "bargain" and "said" where it is reduced to an even shorter vowel "ɛ" or even "ə". As for the "hail", "pail", "fail" set, I speak a dialect where we have reduced those words to sounding like "hell", "pell", and "fell". The bottom line is that spelling in English is very complicated.
@MariaSerban-hg9dl
Жыл бұрын
How about the words "come", "done", "some"? While the second vowel in those words is silent, the first vowel ("o") certainly doesn't sound like in the alphabet!, as opposed to the examples you've given. Why is the "o" in the words "come", "done", "some" pronounced differently from the "o" in the alphabet?

As she said at the beginning, there would be “exceptions”, I think at the end of the day you will know how to pronounce it correctly if you practice a lot, I mean, the more you speak, the faster you will increase your vocabulary and pronunciation There is not doubt about the use IPA, but maybe the video is oriented to beginners students before they start to use and learn the IPA.

American and British pronunciation would be like "owt" and "abowt." Ronnie, being Canadian, would pronounce those words as "oat" and "aboat." Not being mean, just pointing out the difference.

The video started all I heard was a strange noise and how fast she said "Hi I'm Ronny" or whatever she said .
