For all my low budget people out there. I have gone through that entire list on the website she put below the video and these are the shampoos with a good pH level that are not too expensive and don't have any harmful chemicals : - aphogee keratin and green tea shampoo (pH 5.0 - 5.5) - design essentials gentle balance sulfate free nourishing shampoo (pH 4,0 - 5,5) - era organics shampoo and conditioner hair and scalp therapy (pH < 5,5) - Karen moisture natural shampoo (pH 5,4) - motions neutralizing shampoo (pH 4,4 - 5,5) Oh, btw this took me a couple hours, so please appreciate me XD Update: I bought the design essentials gentle balance sulfate free nourishing shampoo and my hair feels a bit better already after one use 😱

Hi there, I'm a hairstylist and curly girl who suffered severe damage from devacurl. Long story short, used devacurl for 7 years with no issues and amazing results. Last summer 2019 the labels on the packaging had changed. Bought new dc shampoo/conditioner and in September 2019 repurchased my usual dc stylers. 1 month later, without any warning my hair started falling out in massive clumps! It was so dry and brittle. I have never experienced anything like that before. I know a lot of people who were using devacurl styling products and having hairloss weren't even using the shampoos so maybe you're on to something with the ph of the products. Usually shampoo will have a higher ph than hair to properly cleanse it and conditioner has a lower ph to bring it back to normal. If all the devacurl products are sitting at a high ph it would make total sense that people's hair was dry and falling out because the cuticle would never close. I saved all my old devacurl products so i think i will test them myself

@@awesomeshapiro1793 I guess it depends on the size of ph change. It looks like it's common for shampoo to be around 5.5 but the matching conditioner is around 3.5 - 5. I don't know if that's still a problem, but likely not as much as using something over 7 then putting something that's around 3 on it. For example bicarbonate of soda is over 8 and undiluted apple cider vinegar is between 2 and 3. Some people do bicarbonate of soda "washes" instead of shampoo and apple cider vinegar (sometimes diluted, sometimes not) instead of conditioner. That's a huge swing in ph.

I have extremely sensitive skin and I cant find a shampoo that doesn't leave my hair dry and more prone to breakage (not falling out though thankfully). I thought my hair changed due to being in my 30's, since my curls became less curly. It seems it's probably because of the health of my hair. Would you have any recommendations for products for sensitive skin that have the correct pH? I feel like these companies are OK at making skincare, but have no idea about what your hair needs, so it may not irritate, but it's not going to be good for your hair either..

You rinse out the shampoo with water, you rinse out the conditioner with water. The water is ph 7 (or more with hard water as you said). So doesn't that mean you are raising the pH of your hair up to the pH of the water anyway repeatedly throughout the shower and at the end of your shower? If that's true then why does it matter the pH of the shampoo, as long as it isn't higher than the pH of the water?

This totally reminds me of a lesson my 7th grade class and I had from a guest teacher in the early 80's (yes, I'm that old...lol). I was kind of bored during the lesson and didn't pay a lot of attention, but I did remember that the PH of hair products mattered, and that you needed to keep the PH balanced. She said if we used a shampoo that had a pH of 5, we should use a conditioner of 5. The funny thing is that there were actually pH listings on some shampoos at that time, but the seemed to disappear within a couple of years after that lesson. 😪 I remember the bottle I was using at my dad's house was listed as.a 7, I think. Yikes! And it was supposedly an expensive, top of the line product. Anyway, great video! Great information! I'm glad you showed where to get pH strips. 🙂

wow I just took a look into the database and was bummed that the fanola shampoo that I bought had not been listed. I took a look at the packaging to google the exact product name and noticed that the ph was literally listed on the front of the bottle 😱 super cool, it has a ph of 5.3-5.7 even though it contains sulfates (my hair is almost straight and doesn't mind them) I wish more companies would do this, a lot of reputable brands already do the same with facial cleansers

I watched a video by BiancaReneeToday talking about DevaCurl and she actually took a deep dive into the ingredients. She had older bottles from years ago and when she compared them to newer bottles, she noticed the ingredients had changed. So she looked up the new ingredients (and I think she also consulted a chemist) and long story short, found out that when that specific combination of new ingredients are mixed together, they create a chemical reaction that results in the production of a relaxer. When the temperature is raised above room temperature (that's 68-72F or 20-22C) even by a few degrees, the reaction is sped up and basically you end up with bottles of relaxer and filler. She then went on to compare the ingredients to popular relaxers and so many of them shared the same combo of ingredients. Makes me wonder if that's how relaxers work. If the relaxer itself is such a high PH that it straightens your hair. It would explain the burning sensation a lot of people get when they use them.

if you walk repetivly ove a section of your yard the grass would stop growing there, could that being another issue with devacurl?, i mean a lot of costumers were obsessed with the brand and some of them even just use that brand and that brand only in several products all at once and in big amount, so could it be acumulative damage, like whats actually happend on those estudies that trigger fear mongering. Besides that at least once in a while according to your lifestyle you need to deep clean your scalp with a anionic surfactant and that's it's a bit damaging but neccesary to clean the scalp and the hair from build up or else can ruin your hair, and deva curl doesn't have that, actually they do have it's just that it's doesn't have those surfactants.

If you google the MSDS sheet for your shampoo it should list the Ph range for the product. Saves you testing a bunch of bottles

I emailed Function of Beauty, and here's what they said about their products: Shampoo: 5.5 - 6.5 Conditioner: 3.5 - 4.5 Leave-in Treatment: 5.0 - 6.0 Hair Mask: 3.0 - 4.0 Serum: has no pH since it is anhydrous

Where were you when I was younger and dumping olive oil on my fine hair?? You’re energy is everything- you’re so positive and just wonderful to watch! And your videos are so high quality, you cite your sources, like YES YES YES! The beauty industry is gonna be scared of you cause you’re exposing their lies. Can’t wait for you to blow up!! Best wishes :)

Is there something wrong with putting olive oil on your hair? Or is it just that it makes fine hair look greasy?

K18's new shampoos both have lower phs. The detox shampoo is 3.8 - 4.2 and their maintenance shampoo is 4.5 - 5.5. The shampoos will be available on their site August 2022. I have already used both (purchased from a salon) and as a coily girl sure enough the detox shampoo is my favorite of the 2 but the maintenance one isn't bad either.

Stupid question: can you add citric acid to your shampoo in order to lower the ph? Or is this a bad idea? Thank you for the info

I'm using nivea ph balanced shampoo and conditioner, and I think it is really good on my hair. My hair barely sheds, I need to wash it just once a week! I recommend it to everyone

I've brought up the pH balance point to a stylist here on KZitem - @TheCurlNinja. She suffers from deva curl damage and is currently searching for an answer(s) for the problem. Anyways, She responded with "We aren't dealing with a raised cuticle that can be lowered back down with acidic ingredients. The hair is a different fabric and it is severely broken down to where it doesn't act like hair anymore. I am not sure the cuticle is even a factor at this point."

I don’t know if you have, but can you talk about in-depth about chlorine in pools or in tap water and what it does to your hair/skin?

Omg Sarah thanks so much for making this video! 💕 I first discovered the importance of pH for hair from Isabella Demarko, and I'm so glad to see you discussing it now! Since you're going to be looking for a new shampoo, let me please recommend you try the OGX (or Organix) brand if you haven't already! Their Coconut Miracle Oil shampoo and conditioner made my hair feel brand new...and now I think I know why! It has a low pH level according to that site you linked 🙂

Can’t you just mix apple cider vinegar to the shampoo? I mean with the ones you already own and use.

It might make the shampoo less effective because it was formulated to work at the ph that it comes as.

If the shampoo says "pH balanced" does that mean it's the correct pH?

It means the pH is balanced for the ingredients to work together. That could mean it has a pH of 7 or a pH of 3, and you would never know.

May I just remind people that products that use “natural ingredients” are not always better. I think it is good to have hair care without harsh chemicals, but people need to realize not all chemicals are bad first of all, and that all natural doesn’t actually have an FDA standard and is normally just something slapped onto a label. Be mindful that natural products may not work and while there are some natural things like oils that are good for your hair, something that is “natural” may be just as bad for your hair and health in general as “chemicals”. Think about it this way. Many radioactive chemicals are naturally formed on earth, but it doesn’t make them any less dangerous. Just make sure you make knowledgeable decisions!

Wow, I'm seeing all the connections now. It makes sense why so many of us tightly curly/coily folks are afraid of shampoo (tangle city + extreme hair fall) and keep experimenting with methods and techniques to maintain our hair to "counteract" its effects. My hair is tightly coiled and fine (strands are skinny) on top of that! Thank you for this content Sarah 💛.

Curly haired ladies can have low porosity (closed cuticle) medium porosity or high porosity (more open). Not all curly haired ladies have open cuticles. So much goes into curly hair, ph doesn’t even scratch the surface. But it is still important.
