Im Hmong and honestly I never seen someone put cilantro in papaya. Us Hmong people usually make it Thai or Vietnamese style where sometimes the color would have brown or is clear. We would almost any vegetable in it but I just never thought cilantro. That looks so good tho, and I would definitely make this. ❤

In Thai, a normal Somtam dish doesn’t have shrimp paste in it. If we add shrimp paste in Somtam, we call it Somtam Luang Prabang (ส้มตำหลวงพระบาง) which is influenced from Laung Prabang, Laos. Normal Somtam, Somtam Thai (ส่มตำไทย) This is a common one: No Fermented fish, No shrimp paste, Have peanuts, have dry small shrimp(กุ้งแห้ง) Somtam Plara(ส้มตำปลาร้า), Somtam Laos(ส้มตำลาว) This is also a common one: Have fermented fish, No shrimp paste Somtam Laung Prabang(ส้มตำหลวงพระบาง)This is not a common one: Have fermented fish, have shrimp paste
