I hit mine this year, and when I realized how expensive mature specimens were, I went nuts buying seed 😅. I haven’t sown the Ariocarpus and Aztekium yet, but I have many others. I’m always squeezing what I can squeeze. It works well. The seedlings are a quiet source of joy each day, though. I’m enjoying my next chapter. Beautiful collection!

WOW, such a fantastic collection of Ariocarpus, Jenny!! The mature ones are awesome, but I also especially love the smaller ones that you have grown from seed, way to go!! And indeed, as you say, these cacti do also really like growing as groups in community pots or trays - I have been having some really quite good experiences with that way of growing my Ariocarpus fissuratus, actually a dozen seed-grown ones (currently down to eleven, as one decided to opt out unfortunately!) Have shared that group in bloom on my channel recently, and really loved and appreciated your comments, thank you once again! Very best wishes to you and Cookie, she is adorable!

Hi Jenny (just discovered Cookie is your cat!) I absolutely love Ariocarpi, they are one of my favourite genera! I think most cacti, or indeed plants, prefer being planted together in larger containers, it's moe like nature. A bit of advice, or a suggestion. It depends on exactly what mix you use, and your conditions of course. But the top dressing basically really, really slows down how fast the soil dries out so can promote root rot. Don't forget, the water is sealed in in those pots, it cannot wick away anywhere. Also, if the sun is on the pots and they have top dressing, water cannot evaporate to cool the pot, and the roots may cook! If you don't have a top dressing, it's also easier to judge if they need watering. I generally water mine just once a month from March/April till October/September.
@cookiescacti

Thanks for the info, Karsten! I live in the Sonoran desert where conditions are extreme in the summer and mild in the winter. Luckily, Ariocarpus do pretty well here and are not nearly as mysterious on care as the south American cactus, well, at least the mature Ariocarpus. Ariocarpus seedlings are still a mystery as they seem to be much less forgiving and die easily. I have my Ariocarpus planted in a super gritty mix and they tend to be on the under potted side. So far they've done quite well. The tubercles being squeezable give me a good indication on when they need water. In the summer they seem to like water every 1-2 weeks and in the winter I let the rains take care of them. They've made it through several growing seasons already and flower nicely in the fall and produce many seed pods in the spring. So far so good!
@cookiescacti

Btw, I started doing what you described on not applying top dressing to the plants that I'm more unsure about. It's exactly as you said, it allows the pots to dry out faster and allows me to visually see the condition of the soil.

Ariocarpus isn't really slow-growing, not when you give them acidic water. What I do is I give them a weak solution of fertilizer (ammonium sulfate & 20-20-20). I have retusus seedlings already flowering at 3 years old! So they aren't rot-prone or slow growing when you know what you're doing. I know you're in Arizona but you can use tap water and add some vinegar or tap water. Here's a good video on what I'm explaining. kzitem.info/news/bejne/o36ZmotssmJmnaQ when you watch the video skip to 8:50 and there's a lot you need to know on how to take care of Ariocarpus.

I just thought: Hmm looks like a tiny aloe type plant but is a cactus? I’m sold haha. I was wondering why it was so much more money than the other plants that I bought, but after I searched for the plant online to see other people talking about caring for them I discovered that I had bought a somewhat rare plant by accident. The nice thing is that lloydii tubercles are squeeze-able so you can have an idea of when it's thirsty.
