First off this was a CHEAP and quick solution for MY needs. I know PEX and wire ties degrade, so will the Intex pool I am using. As far as all the numbers and technical data, when the video was posted it was just setup so no data was available. I did use a pool cover with this setup. I live in Northern Illinois, all I am trying to do is get the pool to warm quicker in the season and stay warmer then it would get normally. Now with a low end solar cover this added a average of 5 to 10 degrees to the water temp. and this is good for the most part but when it got around 90 degrees (air temp) for most of the summer of 2013 it made the pool run around 98 to 104, which really sucked when you get off work and want to cool off in the pool. To date the only problem I've had is last winter I forgot to drain the panel and add anti-freeze, this made the pex freeze and push out the bottom of the panel and the loops sag at the top. Also I have been using a ! inch clear water pump from Harbor Freight set to cycle for 15 minutes every 45 minutes. Again this was MY CHEAP solution to heating a pool. I have learned from this design and am hopeing to build a better version that uses better materials so I can have supplemental heat for my house some day. PS the music is from the pickin on series and if you don't like it oh well you have mute options. I'm a Phanovphloyd and to quote Tom Moon "The more you love music the more music you love" so keep an open mind people and thanks for taking an interest in renewable energy.

That isn't bad, hundreds of gallons of open water (releasing heat into the air) got a 5-10 degree F rise? Seems like this design would at least create a much larger rise if used to preheat water before it came into the house. (I imagine like a 55 gallon barrel with a lot of the 500 ft under the pool instead wound up inside it and heating the exchange liquid like some of the other videos here on youtube)

i would be worried about swimming in that water but you could make a spiral at the bottom of the pool to work as a heat exchanger (youd have to make sure nobdy could get tangled in it) or just paint the bottom of the pool black and do away with the panels. maybe with some lighter dots or stripes for visibility it would look alright. maybe you could get some dark sand or pebbles. that would probably be pretty good eco way to do it. I think pebbles would be good. then you could take them out easy in the summer time if water is too hot and they might look quite good and natural. probably last forever and you could always collect the pebbles up and sell them or otherwise move them to a different pool or application.

Pex won't breakdown meaningfully at least 100 years I bet assuming it doesn't reach over 160-180f consistently. While copper transfers heat way more, plastic is usually quite thin, I saw a study where it makes virtually no difference, plus copper is 10-20x in price. Say you use less pipe and you'll have less heat.

I don't mean to rain on your Parade, but using Galvanized Fittings is the worst thing you can do for this water heater. Those fittings will fail and the few cents you saved will cost you dearly when you have to replace them; especially when you mix them with Brass Fittings almost instant Oxidation. Cooper or Brass Fittings ONLY, don't cheap out and introduce contaminates to your water system. Great project over all, but Galvanized Fittings are an accident just waiting to happen... Cheers....

This system collects over 3kw of sunlight, but the PEX is layed out like a Reverse-Flow Heat-Exchanger, but keeps the heat trapped in the center of the panel. I suggest that you allow the water to only flow clockwise, then draw the hot water from the center of the PEX coil, eliminating the Reverse-Flow heat-loss to the cooler incoming fluid.

Rotating on its intake you loos about 10 to 15 degrees. It has to be a one direction wind because the cold water is cooling your hot water. I had 4 200 feet black hose. My first run the temp in was 40~50. The temp exiting was 200~250. Then increasing pump speed dropped the temp to 150 however the pool temp was a steady 75 degrees all year round. On any long tube collector, there is a point at which the fluid gets as hot as the tube. Any tubing beyond this point is wasted because the heat it gathers has no place to go. Take one of those laser thermometers and measure the temp. starting at the input (cold) end. The tube temp. will start off near the incoming water temp. Shortly after the point where the temp. stops rising is where the extra tubing is just wasted because the water has taken all the heat it can carry. This distance will vary based on flow rate and conductivity of the tube. These spiral collectors need multiple lengths of tubing and manifolds.
@captainchaos3053
6 жыл бұрын
kkarllwt Much as that is correct but the length of tube after the point the temperature becomes constant is most definitely not wasted. The water, air, ground and coil temperature are all variables therfore the length of tubing before the pipe and the fluid inside becomes variable. Any excess pipe after that point will not become any cooler. The more pipe there is the greater stored heat therfore the better the end result. Think of it like a battery. 12v 1ah can sustain 1 amp for 1hour or 10 amps for about 6mins so 12v 10ah can sustain 10 amps for 1 hour or 1amp for 10 hours.
@brianob1
21 күн бұрын
@@captainchaos3053it would be wasted though,you aren't adding any heat capacity as you can't get more heat from it, unless you were storing heat. Additional heat trying to be added is lost back into the environment. I'm not sure of the physics, but it seems about 50-100 ft is good per loop, unless a really high gpm above 3-5.
@captainchaos3053
21 күн бұрын
@brianob1 The idea here is that the water heated by the collector is going to transfer that heat to a large body of colder water with an open surface. Only after the large body of water becomes the same temperature as the surface of the coil will the system stop being able to add heat.
@brianob1
21 күн бұрын
@@captainchaos3053 yeah, it is a little more capacity, but if its that hot it's pretty inefficient. You'd get a lot more total heat if you ran a couple degrees over to the desired temp, say 60 pool and 80 solar vs 150+ if it were no longer gaining temp, probably 200+ and destroy it. I think even a very long pipe of 500' would still be gaining temperature.

Nice video filled with good tips & trix. I'm setting up a solar powered pool heater right now and my goal is 30°C / 86°F in the pool. I'm starting with 250 meters / 820 feet of 20 mm / ¾ inch PEM hose in a flat rooftop setup. A 20V rainwater barrel pump (2,000 liters - 528 gallons / hour) will be connected directly to a solar panel, so it's a completely automatic system controlled and powered by the sun. No sun = no pump = no heating. Since I'm located at 60° latitude in the northern hemisphere, I'll guess it'll be some problems and math to solve along the way, but it'll be fun. I've spent 250 USD for the hose, 50 USD for the pump and 50 USD for the solar panel. If it works, I'll have a pool heater for 350 USD that doesn't require any manuel labour and it'll run for free. You can follow this project and more on my new channel. Keep up your good work

I may go with 3/4 inch black rubber hose sold in 100 feet sections made by Craftsman (Sears) which has a lifetime warranty instead of pex. I know that adds a lot to the initial cost, but it will be lifetime. It will also add weight and I will probably only get 300 feet (maybe 400) in there compared to your 500 feet.

I hope the lifetime warranty is insurance underwritten lol

@@johnbull5394 Garden hose is not for drinking water and the lining may leach chemicals into the water. My non-Craftsman hose turns the water yellow.

@@ddd228 Do Americans drink the water in their swimming pools? This issue of hoses for drinking water keeps coming up, but the video was about a swimming pool! Have I missed something?
