What people should be doing is creating a community arround your music. Make local playlists, example name it ''boston hip hop'', adding only rappers from boston. That way you'll be able to connect with fans in real life, create buzz where you live selling merchandise and connect with other musicians from your area and get that nice solid music local culture actually helping everyone.

I'd like to add as well, a lot of people have a hard time approaching blogs because they're overambitious, don't have cross support for the release or go to wide. Radio and content creators are desperate for quality content, if your release is genuinely good, someone wants to promote it. But if you're releasing your first ever hip hop single, don't approach guitar player magazine. Find local blogs, regional music critics with active followings, offer them an exchange, say you'll let them release your material (that suits their platform and demographic) exclusively and that as you promote the single across platform for the first day/week you'll share their release article so they get click through the more successful your release. The other thing is cross support. When I was living and working with musicians in Ireland the number one thing that music media loved was that you were Irish (especially if you had roots in traditional irish or folk music) and were ACTIVE on the irish music scene! Easily done right! When you're approaching blogs, have a release venue/plan so that when they are saying you've got this new single out they can also advertise a hot new gig in town in a popular venue. This is harder with Covid, but in Ireland it was a surefire way to tick the boxes with blogs and irish radio on some level. You might think, why would they want to advertise your gig? But if you have planned a good locsl gig, with known local support acts, a few early ticket sales (20 tickets presold for 100capacity venue is a GOOD number! Even if you know it's just your mates) and bit of simple marketing (poster, facebook event, a link to the venue's event callender) it actually makes them look good because they're the blog/radio station with their finger right on the pulse!

That's a problem if a team at Spotify is deciding certain users get priority over others, essentially selecting the "tastemakers." I say this b/c it's often a very limited & not very diverse group of people...... I can see a lot of music getting pushed aside.

Those overnight popstars haven't done their thing overnight, that's quite obvious. There have bin often even several years of hard work and practice. The song-making process usually proceeds in such a way that the song is worked on little by little over time, and the truth is also that the makers of the hit songs also make a lot of really bad songs that are just never ever released. But when you do your thing carefully and properly finished and just know how to do the right moves at the right time and you got lille bit of luck, you of course may become a big name in the business really fast.

Hey man, what I tell artists to do in your situation is to get a MailChimp account and try to get 100 friends, family members, classmates, neighbors, ANYONE, on you email list. You'll have to do this manually. Text them, go door to door, whatever you have to do and PRACTICE communicating and sharing your story in a mass-communication setting. Then you'll have a little fan army to do whatever you need them to do for you :)
@rockonileva

@@IndieMusicAcademy nice.. I started telling people individually about it... creating something expectations about it... But I think this mailing solution is something strange in Brazil. People don't use e-mail like a regular communication tool.. it's something more cooperative or specific (I.e. I buy a flight ticket and get on the e-mail the boarding pass). Instant messaging apps and social media are more common communication tools... I think I can work out something like that on WhatsApp. Thanks for the tip!!

@@IndieMusicAcademyAHH I have a question. I'll release the EP and I'm planning to release a vídeo for each song (It'll be a short film, made with local filmmakers, and divided in 4 sections, one for each song). I was thinking about releasing the album on streaming platforms and at the same time a lyric vídeo of one of the songs (to promote the release), and then, on a weekly (or bi-weekly) basis I'll release the 4 vídeos. (so I'll keep posting things for a month or two after the release). BUT someone asked me: Why not releasing the vídeos before the EP, to build up the momentum for it. It makes sense.. but At the time of the EP full release, people would have already listened the songs. Releasing later, people would have somewhere to go after the vídeo is over. If I release the vídeos later, I can direct people to listen to the álbum, to my spotify, youtube or instagram pages. Which one of those do you think is the best way to go? And You'd prefer to release the vídeos weekly or bi-weekly?

If you only post one song, that's what the results will look like. I posted a song on NCS, it just hit 1 million plays on spotify, however my monthly listeners has steadily declined greatly since I haven't posted since then (7 months maybe). Itll fluctuate but I'm sure if we just keep posting tunes at a much more consistent rate than I have that more people will continue to listen and come back to all of your previous tunes along side your new releases.

Am I missing something here? Not entirely certain that showing the screenshot at 1:25 is doing this point any favours. What good does this kind of release strategy do to a musician's career if it apparently doesn't manage to keep the engagement over time or apparently cannot be used again for newer releases as checked on Artur Nelson's profile in a similar way? (He's got nice music regardless, actually enjoying it right now.) Doesn't really seem like this is useful advice for anyone but those 100% new artists without any knowledge about anything regarding Spotify's algorythm.
@IndieMusicAcademy
4 жыл бұрын
That's a very insightful observation. The answer has to do with the nature of playlist listeners, they are notoriously unengaged (which is why I try to convince artists to build an email list of fans and not to rely on Spotify to store their entire fanbase). The peaks on the chart are when we ran big promos and drove traffic to his music, when the promo ends & the traffic is turned off, the majority of the streams died back down. It's just a testimony to how hard it is to get constant streams, sales, and fans if you're not constantly promoting!
@DraconMusic

Do you recommend playlist push and playlist fever to get on the playlist? I did and my numbers jumped up from like 8 monthly to 6000. It took about a month 1/2.
