Autistic people see, hear and feel the world differently to other people. Often people feel being autistic is a fundamental aspect of their identity. Autism is a spectrum condition. All autistic people share certain difficulties but being autistic will affect them in different ways. Some autistic people also have learning disabilities, mental health issues or other conditions, meaning people need different levels of support. Experiencing a mental health problem is often upsetting, confusing and frightening, particularly at first if you don’t know what’s going on. If you become unwell, you may feel that it’s a sign of weakness or that you are ‘losing your mind’. Mental health problems are a common human experience. Most people know someone who has experienced a mental health problem. They affect around one in four people in any given year and can happen to all kinds of people from all walks of life. It’s likely that, when you find a combination of self-care, treatment and support that works for you, you will get better. So please don’t suffer in silence, speak up and talk to someone about it.
