It must have been so much fun to build. And satisfying, knowing you did it yourself. :) I like to think of building bush camps as cubby houses for grown ups. :) ( I don't mean that in an insulting way) You can build them as basic or as elaborate as you want. They're always a work in progress as you continue refining and improving them. I love that you can contain your dog within the structure and not have the worry about where he is all the time.

+Nick Danger can you tell me more about this national forest? what are the regulations for hunting and camping?
@MultiNickDanger
8 жыл бұрын
+Survival Lilly Uinta National Forest - it's beautiful, high-elevation country (my camp is at 10,000 feet). Pristine coniferous forest with clean, clear lakes, tons of wildlife, wildflowers everywhere in the Spring and early Summer. The hunting is top-notch. I don't hunt personally, I'm a fisherman. But what people hunt for around here are mule deer, elk, cougar, bobcat, black bear, geese, beaver, turkey, scaup (that's a type of duck), and I'm sure I'm forgetting several things. They're very strict about the seasons, but the wildlife is abundant to say the least, and I guess that's how they keep it that way. The fishing is fantastic. What a lot of people don't know is that the state of Utah stocks the lakes and rivers of their national forest land (4.5 million acres), with trout, tigerfish, largemouth bass, and walleye. The Mormons are very proud of their state, they want abundance everywhere. The 7-mile northern stretch of the Green River on the eastern end of the state holds more trout per river-mile than any other place on Earth. The only problem with Uinta, as opposed to the other Utah national forests (Dixie and Fishlake) is the camping limitation - 14 days per month, then you have to leave forest land with all your gear. In Dixie & Fishlake you get 16 days, and you don't have to leave the forest at all, you just have to move your camp - 5 miles in Fishlake, 10 miles in Dixie. Uinta is no place I'd want to be in the winter - even now it gets down well below freezing at night and a long cold snap with heavy snow is definitely still possible. In the winter, it would be full Everest mode around here. Not much internet access around - you have to go to a ranger station to get a wifi signal. They don't mind, but I don't do it very often. You just happened to catch me while I've got a small injury (sliced my hand open pretty badly cleaning a walleye) which is keeping me close to civilization for a few days while it heals. Love your videos, BTW. I was showing a couple of the rangers your shelter video and they all got a nice laugh from your Supergirl routine. "Our kind of woman" is the consensus. You have a lovely sense of humor. Thanks for the reply, Lilly.

@MultiNickDanger

+Survival Lilly I live out here most of the year. I have a house in Tennessee but I'm rarely in it. Usually I come out here planning to spend a month then end up staying for at least 3. I can feed myself out here quite easily, I end up giving a lot of fish away to day-hikers and other short-term visitors. I do have a permanent shelter in Dixie National Forest that no one knows about, built a small cabin out of reclaimed wood in the deep, deep, deep forest. Here in Uinta I just set up a tent, this is not a place I could get away with building a permanent shelter, the rangers do make their rounds, and it's not as big or as wooded as Dixie. This year I am seriously considering staying out for a year. I just got here about 10 days ago. I'm thinking about Uinta for the summer, Fishlake for the early fall, Dixie for the late fall/early winter, then possibly the canyonlands of southeast Utah for the deep winter.. But those are national parks, not national forests, so there are more restrictions, and I hate restrictions. Then, of course, back up here to Uinta in the spring-time before heading home. I haven't decided for certain, I'll see how it goes. Friends of mine keep asking me to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail with them, but that takes 6 months. I haven't been away from this wilderness for that long in several years. I just love it too much.

Also I don't understand how the heat can get through the plastic to get into the shelter, but not get through the plastic to get out.
@mikel9567
8 жыл бұрын
The heat is coming from a source (the fire). Heat is radiation and it will radiate in all directions equally. The heat that enters through the plastic remains inside because of the fact that heat is still coming in. If the fire were to go out then the heat would radiate back out to the environment, albeit slower. It is the same principle that a greenhouse uses. Hope this helped.
@gagewileman9434
8 жыл бұрын
Mike L I think I get it. Like how if an air conditioner is on your house stays cool, but when you shut it off it gets warm.
@limogesfarmer6326
7 жыл бұрын
No: this effect is called radiant heat. You can also see the reverse effect: radiant cooling. The plastic sheet lets radiant heat through it because it is thin (very little mass), and has poor radiation reflection properties. The reason it gets trapped in the shelter is because 1) the sheet reduces the air exchange between the inside and outside, 2) because of the insulting properties if the lean-to's construction, and 3) because of the reflective properties in the tarp. There is a balance between energy into the shelter, and energy out of it, and if there is a large enough fire (not too large: you don;t want to melt the clear tarp or set fire to your shelter), then the temperature will increase inside the shelter to the balance point (energy in = energy out). One trick could be to have a trench fire: the fire isn't very large at any one spot, but it radiates energy over a greater area. This would be good for when it gets very cold.

My first question was why you placed the lean two facing the prevailing wind. Yes the wood wall will break much of the wind but would not it have been better to place the slope of the lean two towards the wind? If we left food about in my neck of the woods like you had those cans on the shelf the bears would have made a mess of things.

I don't think it is so much the smell. Here in north west Wyoming, when a bear raids a camp they bite everything just to see what it is. Sleeping bags, tents, boots, everything. And they do bite through tin cans and lick whatever leaks out, might be a learned habit. We have plenty of tourist in the summer going to Yellowstone for them to practice raiding on.

If you have a dog, it should be one capable of catching its own food. Survival is hard enough just feeding yourself. Terriers are good at catching mice and other small rodents and often kill more than they need, leaving something for you. Hounds are hunters but will often chase off more food than they will kill. Setters, pointers and spaniels are mostly game indicators, needing humans to actually kill the game.

As re-engineering to open outwards poses construction problems, a swivel peg-latch on inside near top would help and should be easy to implement. Even as is, the door might keep out a small deer, but certainly not a bear and probably not a pig.

what in your opinion would be better? also how many permanent shelters have you built by yourself?
@alexandervoncarstein3831
8 жыл бұрын
TheElvenArcher that depends on the envirement thet you are in and there are alot of other factors to consider to sutch as weather positioning the available resources there is a lot to consider when you build a permanent shelter because remember you are going to live in that shelter for a while but my number one ad vice to you ia to make it as strong as posible if you are in an area with predators other than that make sure you have a good roof and something to insolate your shelter and one more crucial detail is a water colecting sisten trust.me that is a must because water is very important
@neonnightfall2437

+TheElvenArcher "How many permanent shelters have you built by yourself..." You're an idiot. Do I need to personally jump off a 160ft cliff with no protection or water to break my fall just to know it's a bad Idea? How about wrestleing with a grizzly bear? Do I need to personally go kick a mother bear's cubs around just to know that's a bad Idea? Let's face it, by your own logic, you are implying that you in fact have to physically do something to determine the effectiveness or legitimacy of a claim. If you are to be assumed a richeous and upstanding person, and not hypocritical, that would lead others to beleive you have built a "permanent survival shelter" by yourself. Which, I'm almost sure you haven't... so please refrain from placing a weight and stigma on other's comments when when the same coukd be said about your comments as well. Furthermore, if you are going to sit here and tell me that you HAVE done these things... good. Please continue to do things yourself in order to determine the outcome. Maybe when you make it to Methamphetamines, you will overdose and rid us of your lacklustre logic.
@TheElvenArcher

so angry. lets all calm down now. and you never answered my first question. yes i do believe you need to go out and try things to know how effective they are. i have personally built a permanent shelter by myself. i didn't insult you in any way why are you blowing up for no reason? this is a great shelter that was built by a very talented and intelligent person she thought of what she needed and then dresses those things. please don't pretend that you can gleam any sort of knowledge from watching someone else make something other than enough to make an opinion.
