My 1975 p bass and my 1968 tele bass have plenty of sustain with their original bridges. I use Labella flats which have a higher tension than round wound strings. For me, rounds are floppy, and my flats are tight.

A lot of wisdom here! If it works for you that is what matters. I have 4 basses, an American STD P, a Classic 70s Jazz (MIM), a German Warwick fretless Corvette, and a G&L M-2500. None of them are for sale and the thing that made the differences in these basses is I made them my own. The P and M-2500 are totally stock and are setup (by me) just the way I want them. The Corvette and Jazz have various changes I have done. They all have the original bridge and all sound and play amazing. Your sound is more about your hands and the matter between your ears than anything else. Work on you first and your bass second. You will be amazed at what you bring to the party.

Don’t forget the Hipshot A @ B style bridges 😁 .....also very cool. Their A style is available in different spacing, and available in Brass or (the lighter wt. ) aluminum! Another thing to remember is that bridges with thicker bottom plates like the Badass can raise the “lowest” possible height of your string action. I’ve heard stories about players being unable to set their action low enough for their preference after installing a high mass bridge.

If the ground plate of the bridge is too thick this may be a problem. Just add a shim into the neck pocket, at the front end in this case, to change the neck angle a bit, this will fix this problem. A thin piece of veneer will do the trick. I can asure you that a shim in the neck pocket is nothing bad, nor is it a poor fix. Lots of high priced instruments come with a factory installed shim. Second but not reversal fix: take a metal file and file down the grooves in the saddles. But I think this is the less elegant fix. On some bridges you are able to disassemble the single saddles. Take a belt sander and sand down the saddles as far as you need it. Be carefull not to destroy the holes for the tiny adjustment screws in the saddles. This solution is a bit more elegant than filing down the saddle grooves, but I still would recommend the shim. This one is complete reversable, no modified saddles or bridge, just a small piece of veneer.

The Hipshot B bridges are available in brass and aluminum (my preference) and different spacings too! My only gripe with the nice B style is the tiny Allen wrenches they use.

The two bridges are almost the same but I can say that Leo Quan's son sold the patent rights to Fender and Fender now calls it the High Mass bridge, as featured on the newer Geddy Lee and Steve Harris basses. I don't know if Omega obtained any rights to making a Badass II clone but it's pretty much a copy. I think there's a size difference that keeps it from violating infringement.

I bought a Precision recently. She has an Omega bridge (came without grooved saddles) and a Creamery pickups. Previous owner fitted them. They're sweet. Got a Sire Jazz V7 this year too, that bridge has a traditional bent steel base plate but the saddles are Badass/Omega style. This Sire/Marcus Miller Jazz is beautiful sounding. And such a low price !!! I turned around and realised I was feeling the draught of not having Fender tones on my rack. ;^)

I believe in changing strings, strap locks, and electronics like capacitors as well as linear potentiometers from the (logarithmic) audio taper. Then the preamps etc. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Changing the bridge and so on change responsiveness of the guitar in regards to bass to mids as well as treble. Then the preamp may not sound quite the same after you boosted the lows as well as the highs because you mechanically cut the mids. Reverend Long is in the preaching from the pit in this one. You and I are just alike on that things. 👏🏼

This is the most honest review of bass bridges I've ever seen and imho I've seen them all. It's nice to see someone give the pros and cons of most of the ones currently available on the market and not bash one against the other. As for me? I've been a Babicz guy for years but have to admit the Omega or Hipshot Kickass bridges are a viable alternative to a Babicz for a lot less money. Thanks for the video from a new subscriber.

Most likely, either the patent rights were sold or were allowed to expire, which allowed for the original Bad Ass design to be copied and/or manufactured under another name. Fender also has their own version of this bridge on some of their basses, like the Dimension and MIA Geddy Lee. The older Geddy’s and Marcus basses had BadAss bridges.

Babicz, which is way too ugly, or the KSM, which is way too spendy new. Aluminum transfers resonant frequencies faster than any of the other bridge metals, brass, steel, or zinc. They also don't weigh 3/4s of a pound....

Shore u right Mr Johnny! Plus which, who knew you was bilingual? As far as the resale value of a vintage bass well, original everything trumps any modifications added to an instrument. That’s what the collector looks for, Just like with a car or a bike. Player’s ain’t always mindful of that so think twice, then think again. It could change the value of a bass by several hundred of dollars if you ever decide to sell or trade up. So Don’t second guess Leo. he knew what he was doing better than you and me!

Hi Johnny, great video....I like to keep my basses as stock as possible, I had a BADASS II bridge put on one of my basses and it seemed to make the bass a little sterile, took away the warmth and personality of the bass. I like the cheap very thin stock bridge, that comes on the MIM Fender basses !!!!! I also like a heavy bass, heavier the better!!!!!

It makes no sense - but it happens all the time. If you swapp bridges on a (lets say) older bass, just make sure that it is a fit and there has to be no woodwork done like drilling new holes, and keep the old bridge, for heavens sake! Later you sure will regrett the bridge swapp, and you'll be thankfull still to have the old bridge. Believe me, been there, done that.
