I think your assessment of all breeds has been spot on. I used to be all about Heelers, until I actually needed a dog to work. Once I understood the Border Collie mind, there was no going back. Their intelligence and work ethic are second to none. I move cattle across the high desert of Northern Nevada. After many years now watching dogs work on the open range, I've fallen in love with the Kelpie, and their athletic ability/endurance in our extreme country. I've watched the cowboys out here begin to cross Border Collie and Kelpie, which has produced some amazing stock dogs. I'm keen to your comments in other videos about cross breeding. However, I now have a Border Collie/Kelpie cross that is proving to be one of the best stock dogs I've ever owned. She's a power house with lots of feel. This cross could very well become my preferred "breed". My goal is to make her into a superior range cattle dog, as well as use her on sheep, and trial. Your videos have been very helpful in my training process. I've mostly learned patience watching your videos, and our view points align on topics you cover. Thanks for giving insight and a window to your methods.

You were talking about the strengths and weaknesses of different dogs. As a total novice, all of your dogs look awesome to me, but I was wondering if you could do a video talking about what you think their individual strengths and weaknesses are? Are there ones that you like to use better for penning as opposed to working out in an open field trailering big bulls. Thank you!

I know they are not a herding dog by trade, but have seen many people, especially down in Texas and New Mexico, use Black Mouth Curs on cattle. Have you ever used them or seen them used? If so what is your take on them as cow dogs?

What's your opinion on Australian Shepherds ? I've had five and most have been smarter than some teenagers. My current dog is from a working line and I don't have livestock for him. I had him in a herding clinic for a few weeks. The instructor had covid long term and it was a drive for two hours of work. That ended, and I can't find any livestock for him.

I was curious about what you think about using cur dogs. I think i heard in another vid you say you have used them and other breeds. I see why you use the collies not asking why you don't use curs, just wondering if you liked them or there is something missing with them you want that your border collies have. i know you like a dog that is tough and bites and curs can definitely be rough. I love a good cur dog

LOL Took my older border collie to a herding evaluation when he was younger and he just skipped around the pen looking like he was some performer at a drag show. The yearling I've got now tries to herd everything and is very intentional and disciplined in his actions but in no way a hard enough dog to work cattle temperament wise. Would likely struggle even with sheep who weren't dog broke as well. BC temperaments are just all over the place. Crazy smart trainable breed, super easy to work at distance but often the nerve just isn't quite what's needed for confrontational livestock.

I firmly believe that the Border Collies need to have the natural instincts for herding in the first place. Some have it, and some don't. Next, is the training that's put into them on what you want that dog to do consistently. Out of all the cattle dogs there are, I believe that Border Collies are the quickest thinking and reacting dogs when in a situation that calls for it. We had Border Collies when I was a kid and grew up with them, Dobermans, and Rottweilers. Even in the past Rottweilers were used for herding cattle.

These days there is no such thing as "breeds" as they vary to much within there own breed, and are not bred based on character and abilities that they were produced for and not tested against these attributes. A good dog is a good dog, a dog that works - is a dog that works. That is all that should be of concern
