Amruta, you are a treasure! I will use this video with our tech comm students for many reasons beyond what you envisioned. For instance, the thread showing feedback on your docs from stakeholders and your responses is critically important. And it’s hard to understand how this plays out before you have experience. Thank you!

So great to hear that! I would to hear your thoughts on the next video in which I discuss how to find and choose open source projects. And if any of your students wants to participate in Google Season of Docs or other open source events, I will be happy to help them brainstorm project proposals :)

Amruta, I'm not sure if you'll respond but what if we don't know how to navigate through github? I've been having a profile on github for a while now, unfortunately I just don't know how to find an open source and when I do, what I should edit? Do I edit only the "READ ME" sections? I'm just so confused.. - sincerely a recent graduate with a portfolio consisting of 2 things, and aspiring technical writer

Hi..GitHub can be intimidating, so it's okay if you struggle with it. Be kind to yourself while you learn. There are several great videos on KZitem that can help you learn GitHub. There are also some SkillShare classes that might be helpful. As for what you should edit -- that depends on what your goal is. If you want to build your portfolio, a README is a good place to start. As you get a hang of GitHub and open source tools in general, you can take on bigger projects.

Hi Amruta, if a student is just starting out. What scope of project would be best to do to start building a portfolio?
@AmrutaRanade
2 жыл бұрын
Start with the smallest project you can find. Contributing to open source involves learning a lot of new things (GitHub, Markdown, working with maintainers, etc.) so make sure the actual project is as simple as possible

Hello mam, I am a 2nd-year undergrad student in computer science at IIIT Gwalior with no experience in technical writing. Can I participate in Gsod or this program is only for experienced technical writers. If I can apply then which courses or resources do you recommend me to go through to gain some experience in technical writing.
@AmrutaRanade
4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Participation in GSoD depends on the organizations I think. If an organization finds you to be a good match for their project, they might be willing to work with a new tech writer. I don't have recommendations for a beginner-friendly tech writing course, unfortunately, which is one of the reasons why I am planning on a series of videos for new tech writers. Stay tuned :)

Thank you for your reply. I am currently working on aerospace technical writing and I would like to change my domain to software writting. Is it possible to change? If yes ..could you please tell me the methods, reading materials and good website to learn it 😊
@AmrutaRanade
3 жыл бұрын
I want to say yes, but I have no experience switching domains, so I can't say for sure. I would suggest writing a couple software-oriented tech writing samples, applying for software tech writing jobs, and evaluating the response to figure out what skills they are looking for and what you need to learn.
