You’re killing it man! I’ve noticed after 20+ years of teaching guitar that one thing that seems to be subconsciously difficult for people is moving two fingers, especially middle and ring, in opposite directions at the same time. This is what’s happening with your Em to D, and it’s going to happen with G to D and G to C. There are specific exercises, but it’s probably just as helpful to simply remain aware of this when slowly practicing the changes. With C to D, however, you’re letting your middle and ring separate during the change and they go down one at a time, but if you look at the configuration it’s the same for both chords, just two different pairs of strings. Think of C to D (and D to C) as changing only TWO fingers: middle and ring are one big unit that simply hops over a few strings, and the index finger simply moves one fret/string diagonally. These are nice nitpicky things to think about and practice, but really, just strumming tunes and trying to change chords in rhythm will take care of many difficulties. Keep it up!!
@NewLifeWithGuitar
Жыл бұрын
Ah thanks so much Ben! I'm glad to hear it's a really common thing with the two fingers... well, glad that I'm not alone with it.. not glad that many of us struggle with it haha. I also think you're right in that it should hopefully iron itself out with time and practice... so will not dwell on it too much or make fixing that a main priority of my time.. not unless it's still an issue in 2 or 3 years anyway haha! Thanks for the encouragement & wise words of advice - I appreciate it!

'Space Age Jim' just checking in again, you are doing great. I always say that if you can get in 100 hours of concentrated practice and practice the correct things you WILL be better than 95% of all guitarists in the world, you are proving me right. I like to relax my strumming hand and often practice going strumming softly 'ppp' to 'fff' like a crescendo over about 6 measures. If I am strumming forte the whole song then when a phrase needs to build power and energy, you have no place to go as I am already playing loudly. Also on upstrokes you rarely hit more than strings 1-3 as hitting all of the strings sounds rakish. I also like to slightly 'Palm Mute' single notes like on ''Come as you Are' try it out by resting the flesh of your palm lightly, it sounds totally cool. And if you want a truly evil and risk calling out demon sound then rest the flesh of your forearm on the strings, but that may be a bit TOO evil. haha You can actually get close to 'Evil 'Breaking Bad' slide guitar sound at the start of every show. Be back in a few weeks, keep it up my friend.

Thanks Space Age Jim... sound advice & great words of encouragement as always! You're spot on with your points regarding strumming & using different degrees of power & energy etc... will help add some extra personality & emotion to the playing I am sure... I believe this is something I'll be taking a closer look at very soon... I am trying my best to keep it in mind for sure while practicing but soon it'll become even more of a focus for a time. I'm struggling along with strumming to 6:8 time signatures this week rather than the standard 4:4 I've been used to up till now... I notice your new video on the C chord as well... I'll check it out! My C chord still needs plenty of extra attention.

Soundin' good! 7 Nation Army, that's the riff that just popped in to my head last night while watching hockey & noodling on the guitar. I just kept playing it with slides & bends and had no idea what song it was. A good song for G, C, D, and Em if you like Pearl Jam is "Last Kiss". Old faithful strumming pattern. It's my go to warm up with a metronome song to play :) Hey, one thing I noticed with this video, and it could be camera angle, is your fretting hand looks a little bent at the wrist. I think I was like that at first but I knew it to be a "bad habit" from other teachers on KZitem so I worked on keeping my fingers curled and my wrist straight. Something to look at early on maybe. A metronome tip & strumming that I use when warming up...I set it between 40 & 60 BPM (start slow), then I strum whole notes for 12 bars, then half notes for 12, then quarter, then eighth, then triplets, and finish with 16th's. I mute the strings with my fretting handing and just strum, no pattern, but it helps me lock in on the beat. You're killing it man, keep it up, great progress for 10 weeks!
@NewLifeWithGuitar

I shall take a look at that song as soon as I'm G chord song searching! I'm still not super comfy with D & C in songs... so don't want to hit panic mode when a G is in there as well hahah.. so I may wait a week & just practice changes before I then practice G chord songs... at 10 bpm to start.. 😂 Yeah I think you're likely right about the wrist... it probably is bent too much at times so I will start paying attention to that if I can... I think it relates to me wanting to make sure my thumb remains at the back of the neck. I'll have to have a little play around & figure things out... definitely worth being addressed now early on rather than after it's a bad habit! I like the sound of that strumming exercise you do as well... I haven't yet looked too much into quarters, eights, triplets & all that.. all sounds good though!

@@NewLifeWithGuitaryeah, I was dead on the same way in regards to my wrist at your stage, however I probably went almost 2 years before I started working on because my barre chords were absolute trash and that's the reason. Once I got my wrist straight, like Justin's looks like, boom they barres were good. It also helped me with my A chord as I do the 3 fingers (3 fat, hot dog looking fingers) crammed in a triangle like Justin showed. G chord will be stupid simple, however....There are 3 main ways to play the G chord. It looks like Justin teaches 2 ways & 1 of the main ways. The 2 finger version he shows I usually play with ring & pinky and only use it when I am doing fast C chord to G chord changes. 99% of the time, I use what he used to call the "BIG G CHORD" where you use pinky, ring, and middle, and could use index as well.

@@guitarwhirlwind Yeah that's the thing isn't it... too easy to avoid songs just because they have chords we don't like trying to play... I've been looking for a song that only uses the Em & nothing else but there aren't many around... If it's just an Em I know I can nail it 😂😂

I have actually started some very simple fingerstyle stuff this week... very, very basic stuff... I think I will no doubt focus on fingerstyle a lot more in the near future!

Old hat here. Commit to the metronome early. I’m still overcoming the bad habits I developed by not using one on a regular basis. Do it now so you don’t have to someday in the future! Lol

Haha thanks Nick! Yeah I do use the metronome a lot... though I'm sure I could still use it more!! Just about finding the right balance I guess between using it correctly to make practice more effective but to also make sure I at least enjoy the majority of the practice as well haha..! I mostly enjoy using the metronome to practice switching between chords at slower/faster tempos... or to practice some muted strumming.

@@NewLifeWithGuitar smart point though you have to have some fun while you’re learning or you won’t wanna keep going! Practice can be exhausting but if you’re putting in an actual hour of focused practice a day, you’ll get there sooner than you know it. Keep up the great work!

Kudos for sticking with guitar. Electric guitar is a bit easier to play. Think about it. Big like and sub❤

That's true, but that doesn't really do him any good. I lost a lot of time with that strategy. If you want to play acoustic, you also have to learn acoustic. These are still 2 different instruments.

To be fair I'm loving acoustic at the moment and for some reason don't have a strong desire to try an electric yet.. despite being a fan of most rock style music... maybe in time it'll be inevitable that I'll want to give electric a go! Thanks for the like & the sub... I appreciate that & also appreciate your input!!
