I made a petition to show Paradox that this game has quite a bit of support: chng.it/RbFQX7bfBJ I have made this petition in hopes that Paradox might be swayed to continue development of Imperator: Rome if sufficient support for the game is shown despite their decision to pause and potentially cancel further development. While it is true that Imperator had a rocky start with a less than stellar release my impression is that the game has started to be seen in a more favorable light by the broader community of the Paradox games. The reception of Imperator's 2.0 update, does in fact stand in a stark contrast to the game's initial release and cannot be considered anything else than an incredibly successful update. Anecdotally my grand strategy-invested friends seem to be in agreement that at its core Imperator is a superior Paradox title. This is perhaps made even more tragic by the fact that Imperator's 2.0 release was, to put it lightly, much better received than EU4's new 1.31 update and Leviathan DLC with its 8% positive reviews on Steam, many of which being sarcastic. This means that for the sake of a 7 year old game that developers seem to struggle to release substantial constructive updates for a new and very promising game will likely see its development cancelled. Part of the reason why Imperator has not seen the popularity it deserves is that the modding community as well as somewhat dedicated Twitch and KZitem channels have failed to emerge to the same extent as for other Paradox games. This is likely due to its bad reception on release and the degree to which the game has rapidly changed since. However the time to pull support from the game could not be worse as we for the first time since release have started to see this kind of enthusiasm for the game. Here the "Imperatrix: Victoria", "Late Republic" and "Bronze Age" mods deserve mention. It has also, together with CK3, also seen the emergence of a new kind of facilitating mod that will lead to the development of many more mods further down the line in the "Greater Earth Map" mod. Several KZitemrs, from Zlewikk to FlorryWorry have also recently played the game and unlike at release these videos seem to be very well received by their viewers. Lord Lambert definitely also deserves mention here for the role he has taken on as a champion for the game. Imperator has become the most realistic and potentially deepest game of recent Paradox titles and I am dismayed to see its development formally paused as I have been overjoyed by the direction the game has been taking. I was not a fan of the introduction of EU4's mana system and seeing a more modern Paradox title taking up the torch of a somewhat realistic civilization simulator has been a true joy. I already find Imperator more enjoyable to play than other Paradox titles. While this petition is only asking for the continued development of Imperator, ideally under Arheo's continued lead, I also wish to encourage you to try Imperator if you are a fan of grand strategy games and have not done so yet. If you know you enjoy the game I want to encourage you to purchase the content packs if you have not done so yet as this will let Paradox see that the game can indeed be profitable. Personally I also do not plan on buying any other Paradox games or DLC until we see the continuation of Imperator's development.

I see no need to play ck3 until there's a lot more content for it. I think people had the same issue with imperator. It's the paradox philosophy. Build a base game, then make updates and dlc for it. It can end up with a great game, but it's hard to start over. Paradox had grown in popularity, so they aren't niche anymore. People expect more from a base game. IMO, that's what led to the bad imperator launch. I think ck3 got away with being compared to imperator and looking and being way better, but it's been dry on the updates. I like this format, I sadly just do not have the time or stamina to watch full streams anymore, so posting highlights every now and then is great. I was nodding my head so much during that last segment, I've been involved in behind the scenes testing for strategy games and seen it an awful lot, where a series just goes the direction the testers like, losing sight of the general audience. If Paradox keeps catering to the "has 1000's of hours in the PDX games and nothing else" crowd they are going to continue tanking with the overall strategy playerbase, because what that core likes is thousands of interlocking mechanics and menus when general audiences like a more streamlined approach (I know the word streamlined infuriates some people, but that's just reality, deal with it.) Their update strategy is exactly the same way too: every update adds new frivolous mechanics instead of improving the core gameplay or quality of life. We didn't need three entirely new economic systems for Stellaris! We needed a working engine and netcode, which they still haven't delivered on! We needed LESS micro and better automation, not more tedious micromanagement!

I mean, cities skylines is their best game. You can’t tell me there isn’t a big market for city building games. You can’t tell me there is a large audience for city building games. Look at the cities skylines Reddit and you can’t tell me the community is small. Look at cities skylines. The ceiling of this game is very high. Imagine if they have a multiplayer where you have 4 people playing in 1 map. There’s already videos of that attempt but it’s just them sending their saves to discord but there’s a demand for that. City building games like cities skylines have a higher potential to outdo themselves if they make a 2nd game and just go full commitment on the management aspects of the game. Like what it feels like to be the mayor managing a city and some building zone laws and departments since a Mayor can’t build a city unless he gets permission from various departments. Stuff like this is just the tip of the iceberg of city building/city management. The ceiling is very high for cities skylines. I think the next version of cities skylines will blow up to the point famous Let’s Play KZitemr and other well-known KZitem gamers will play cities skylines 2.0. The community will get bigger and bigger. That’s just my 2 cents.

I’ll give them points for trying to fix the game, but that launch is still inexcusable. They should have abandoned it after launch once they first realized it was a dud but I’m glad they released 2.0. If they come back to it later and update it I’ll come back to it.
@demrasnawla

Paradox set a precedent where they release a barebones foundation and then lay content upon it over the course of a few years. EU4 for example was mediocre at best on launch, same with HOI4 and HOI3. Victoria 2 sucked on launch. CK2 was also very barebones on launch. Since they've dropped Imperator so early, they've now made it uncertain that they'll bring their games up to scratch post-launch. I think this'll make people more hesitant to buy Paradox games on or near release, which unfortunately will then lead into a feedback loop where they get abandoned because of that hesitation.
@arrowknee7356
3 жыл бұрын
The issue is, whilst 2.0 was a huge improvement, I get them deciding not to add more content as it wasn't worth it. But there are some ui issues and bugs that need fixing, so having a small team work on fixing that should be expected. Abandoning it now is basically overhauling many systems and then leaving it when they just need some small tweaks to fix those changes. For example there are some menus where clicking the button doesn't work, you have to click slightly above it etc. I feel fixing that shouldn't be something they abandon, those fixes really need to happen as for me, it makes me want to wait before supporting any of there games to make sure the most basic of issues do get fixed. If they claim they don't have the manpower for such fixes I simply do not believe them. I don't expect new content giving it has such a small playerbase, but I do expect a ui and game that functions properly. So regarding obligation, should they not have an obligation to fix issues such as bugs, especially when it is things like the ui not always working as intended. I think the lad mentioning the car example is perhaps taping into this, it would be like buying a car, they recall it for some problem, whilst they fix this they give you a notable upgrade to the car, but then the car door doesn't shut properly, or maybe the car drifts a little to the left. It is great they fixed there initital mistake and even improved the product you purchased. But in doing so if they cause other issues to exist, they really need to fix them also.

Fair take mate. thanks for sharing. As an enthusiast of the game, I FEEL differently about it, but I don't disagree with your analysis. The only thing I would add is, cutting ties without a courtesy patch feels bad - As stable and nice as I find patch 2.0.3, there are bugs and issues that deserve fixing - that the community ould have helped pinpoint had they know this was the end of the road for now. Finally, the game is arguably the best foundation for mods out of any concurrent PDX game. Modding scenes often bloom after a game ceases active development.

I mean, that’s like saying “these mods should’ve been in the cities skylines game already as a base game” That’s not a good argument that you think developers “a programmer” plays the same amount of hours as a regular gamer. That’s also not a good argument that you think “This mod is so good, why can’t developers think of this before” As if you’re assuming they planned this and they chose to hold back on these features and make ppl pay for it as a “DLC”. If you think so, then I expect you to back it up. I would like to see evidence that they had a conference and they’re like “Let’s hold back on these features and make people pay for it”. But no, that’s just assumptions. Assumptions leads to toxicity as gaming communities are first hand experience of toxicity.

Imperator Rome, it was a disaster at start, I had a long long topic about this on paradox forum. Story short: like Europa Universalis Rome was destined to fail, not because how they worked on the game, but because the competitors offer. WW2 total war could be a disaster turn base game, but Hearts of Iron 4 is a great succes, the complexity of WW2 timeline will have an imposible scenario in total war, but in clausewitz engine is great, even HOI2 is way better than a WW2 total war. About ancient time, generals were like 70-80% the reason a battle was won, you can do it in a total war game, but in a grand strategy will be a disaster. Imagine Alexander with 40 000 soldier agains Darius with 250 000, you can't say Alexander won just because it's Alexander, you have to build an algorithem that will unbalance the game. The only reason CK2 or CK3 is so sucessful is because is a mix with RPG. For me the formula is simple, before 1400 AD it's total war, after 1400 AD, it's paradox. Even Victoria 2 was so succesful because the timeline, and imposible to make the same complexity in a total war.

I am disappointed. It does show how important first impressions are though. I love this time period, and I like the game. I am against hype, but I bought this game on launch, and enjoyed it, even though I knew it needed a lot of work. I am very impressed and appreciative of the work the team put into making things right. The big issues were ironed out in free updates, while the dlc were content like new missions, which I think is the best way to handle dlc. It's a lot like CA's Warhammer 2 dlc record. You can buy the dlc if you like the content, but changes to the whole game are free. I thought there was starting to be positive buzz around imperator with the 2.0 update, but maybe that was wishful thinking. I never checked the stats. It doesn't help that imperator is competing with other paradox games. I try to swap around paradox and total war games. My most played paradox game is CK2, with over 1000 hours. Imperator is second with over 500 hours, and stellaris is third with close to 300 hours. Paradox games are a pain in the ass to learn. Each one is different though similar, and they often have radical changes, and small changes that might have a big impact. I busted my ass trying to succeed as Epirus, and when I finally found a good strategy, I was very proud. I have a lot of good memories, and the game is still playable. I'm just sad that this is a good as it is gonna get, because it has a lot of potential. I will say thank you to the imperator team. It was a crappy launch, but every update made the game better, in my eyes. To me, it was on a good trajectory.
