But K Richards said both this album and pepper were crap so I assume that this is abkos doing and not the stones. The real stones reissues were the two stereo box sets one with the black tongue and the othervwith the red tongue

@@TJRtheOriginal I saw that video after I sent my comment. I've been a fan of the album since the early eighties, I avoided it for a while, but besides the cover, it's really nothing like Sgt. Pepper. I really like the weirdness of it, it makes me wish Sgt. Pepper was weirder.

As a kid (with a sound engineer/musician dad) my recollection of buying the Sgt. Pepper's album in Spain (the Spain vs was the UK version) was to stare at it with the cellophane wrap on . The album was a visual feast BEFORE it became an audio revelation. I think it took us 2-3 hours just looking at the cover and identifying the "cast", digesting this new "mustachioed" look and reading the lyrics. It was self imposed torture but Oh what sweet pain. I had heard a few of the songs over UK stations my dad had not. I remember being fascinated by "She's leaving home" and I knew my dad would be BLOWN away and we'd be hearing "She's leaving home" for the next week while my dad was at home. Finally we opened it and the "goodies" came out and I screamed "COJONES" (BALLS!) in utter surprise and delight. I got a look and a wink. and we kept waiting to actually listen to this , this "masterpiece" that just happened to come along with the LP. Then Sgt. Pepper began and my dad immediately stopped and said .. "it has a "TAXMAN" intro.... "Fuck dad let it PLAY! and that was the same for each song. As I knew my dad almost cried on "She's living home" while he analyzed its production ... "This IS a masterpiece and fuck Beethoven and Mozart" and we had THREE weeks of "Oh, wow, MY GOD ... family came over to listen to it. By Dec the LP was pretty much a constant soundtrack at home , and then my dad showed up with "Satanic Majesties" and he declared "This is SHIT!" The pseudo 3D plastic plaque seemed out of place with the rest of the cover. A second thought to which no one gave much thought. Although we were Stones fans . the verdict was brought down . SHAME on these cocksuckers.I "think" I played "Rainbow" a few times and that was it . A poor counterfeit of a master piece. My dad took it personally. "Have they no shame?" Is this a parody? they can NOT be serious !. "Majesties" went into the shelf never to be seen again, until my dad just gave it away. That was how different these two albums were . A Rembrandt vs a drunken "Warhol" "Majesties" was a terrible fuck up that MOST musicians I know despise

The songs on this album are very hit or miss for me. I love songs like Citadel, 2000 Man, 2,000 Light Years From Home, She's A Rainbow, and The Lantern. But I also dont care for songs like Gomper, On With The Show, or Sing This All Together (See What Happens). This album really did showcase Brian Jones and Charlie Watts and how, respetivly, they were a great instrumentalist and drummer. I might purchase this if the price goes down. Thanks for the video TJR, keep 'em coming.

TJR - really nice review. Thank you! Yes, Their Satanic Majesties Request will be in almost nobody's top ten Stones albums. However, it is a singular album by the World's Greatest Rock 'n Roll Band. The Beatles did not have such a one-off album. That's what makes it so interesting, and vital. I have 20+ Stones bootlegs... some are magical, but TSMR trumps (sorry) them all in how unique and special it is. Yeah, you can listen and say, "wow, this is a load of crap," or "holy sh... Donovan meets Hendrix, via Mick and Keith... and Brian." One last thing, we all grew up hating Allen Klein; however, ABKCO has consistently put out better stuff for the Stones' fan than Rolling Stones Records. Whoever the demon ABK left the company to... bless you brotha! Keep it going. Thanks TJR for a sweet review.

I like this album a lot more than most Rolling Stones fans do. The only tracks that I dislike are the last songs on each side of the LP, tracks 5 and 10. While I really like that they reprinted the lenticular cover, it's a shame that there aren't any outtakes or alternate takes included. Not even the songs "We Love You" and "Dandelion", which were released as a standalone single in 1967. I would consider buying just the 2 CD's on their own, but only if it had the lenticular cover. I don't have the album in mono either, so that would add value for me as well. Hopefully they consider releasing big box sets of the "Beggars Banquet" and "Let It Bleed" albums next. There are a lot of unreleased outtakes and alternate takes from the recording sessions for those albums.

I am unsure if I will get this or now, I probably won't preorder it, unless some early reviews come out for it prior to release day. I have it currently on LP, that was released a few years back, it sounds good I think, it's in stereo, I would be interested in hearing it in mono possibly. I also like the idea of having it with the lenticular cover, and also to have it on CD. This album is not bad, but it's not my favorite Stones album, I think my favorite is probably Sticky Fingers, Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, I have not heard Ever Stones album, but once the audio quality reviews for this release come in, it will determine if I buy this one or not.

I have always loved this album, and I wish The Stones took their psychedelia a little more serious because they made some of the best stuff in that genre at this time. However, as excited I am about this edition, I'm upset they didnt release any stuff that didnt make it on the record. I know the Stones have a lot in the vault, and I get frustrated when they have these big box sets and only release a little bit, if at all. But nonetheless - glad this album is getting some kind of treatment.

Actually looking forward to a re-mastered version of this album. I have one of the first CD versions(bought it used, by the way), and it was sonically lacking. Lots of different types of instrumentation, and the early CD releases don't show enough "color" to the sound. Yes, lots of people will bash this album......but I find that some of the later Stones material lacking in "fire" or "creativity". Too much trying hard to plagiarize themselves in things like "She Was Hot", "Saint of Me", etc.....I'd much rather listen to "Majesties" instead. As for the "spacy" moments on "Sing it all Together"(watch what happens).........it truly "holds its own" against some of the Pink Floyd or Beach Boys tracks from the same period of time. The snoring on "In Another Land" is annoying......"2000 Man" should had been done as a straight-on Stones rocker, instead of this acoustic "push-pull" thing. (At least KISS "got it right" when covering it---especially when doing it live). "On With the Show", well, a bit of a comic novelty thing. It does show the musical versatility of Brian Jones. And also a good reference point on how to do(and not to do)certain things, musically. It's not perfect. But a lot of good qualities in there. And certainly better than many current artists' hits.

Would be nice to see a similar treatment for Beggars, Ya Yas and Let It Bleed... my purchasing of music is on pause for the time being so I won't be getting anything by anyone and when I start again "Eight Days A Week" on blue ray will probably come first... I think the ABKCO versions in general have been better... I think are only head to head comparisons are Brown Sugar and Wild Horses which are shared by ABKCO and the band's own label... I have an ABKCO Greatest hits package with those tracks and the Sticky Fingers remaster you mentioned.... It's the one with the bonus disc... When I was a kid Sticky Fingers and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band were my two favorite albums... I do think that people don't appreciate Aftermath and Between The Buttons and other Mid Sixties Stones material enough... although I do agree that the sweet spot is Beggars through Main St. Still I think that High Tides And Green Grass sounds excellent on CD... Extra research had to be done by an archivist since the Stones recorded a lot in the United States for those 60s albums... to make sure they had the 1st generation masters... You mentioned Hendrix... I have mad respect for Eddie Kramer but there's a lot of clipping on the Electric Ladyland CD... the detail is very good but a Strat clipping.. personally I find that hard to listen to.... I think the best remasters ever are the Led Zeppelin discs that Page remastered... No giving into the modern loudness temptations... Led Zeppelin III is amazing 😉 and the first ones he did were great for the time... The only one I didn't get in CD or High Resolution download was CODA which I hope to get at some point... I mixed it up on the bonus material... I'm mostly interested in the original releases... though I actually like the extras on "On The Threshold Of A Dream" by The Moody Blues which is one of my favorite albums.... One recent one I didn't like the sound quality at all was a repackaging of A Salty Dog by Procol Harum... The bonus disc sounded good but the original was not first generation and they leaned way too hard into it in terms of loudness/compression... that one I hope to get on one of the Japanese versions which I've heard great things about...

Why Sgt. Pepper was released almost globally with the same track listings was contractual, as the nine year contract they signed early in 1967, stopped Capitol slicing and dicing the UK Albums, and once The Beatles got control with they released, then other artists got their way as well, and in this case includes The Rolling Stones.

#101 - Aug 2, 2018- about a year since your review, which I enjoyed, and I have been enjoying SMR quite a bit lately. I don't know much about all the different releases, or potential releases, but I still find most of this album pretty easy to listen to. That is, there is more to it, than most give credit for. Considering the history of that year for the Stones, it is a wonder that they even were able to produce a record at all. But I love the message of the album-"Sing this Song all together"- which was the same or similar message of several groups at that stage of 'Flower-Power' psychelia. Anyone remember the Peace Movement/ Anti-Vietnam War Movement- I didn't think so. Maybe Man is not capable of singing any tune 'all-together'.

I have some Steve Wilson remixes of classic albums. Some get it great, others I prefer the original for some reason. Wilson did not remix sgtpepper., but now, after a while with both my old swedish pressing and the New niles martn mix, i prefer the old one. it simply is warmer in sound. This satanic release I would love to get, but do not know/think i will pay for. I have ordered the 2lp hysteria coloured vinyl for a lot of money, Still waiting for it. Stinks that it is only remastered, not remixed. Mutt lange would have to do that, maybe they asked? Remastered albums seldom sound different if the initial release was good. I do not know satanic album well, so i would ot notice anything at all if i were to get it. RemASTER is a sales tool, remix is when it gets interesting.

I agree that ABKCO should have started a 50th Anniversary release with earlier Stones albums such as Aftermath, however, from what I hear they will be doing one on Beggars Banquet for next years 50th Anniversary. Maybe even a Let It Bleed in two years. I would also like to add that you mention at 1:17 "It shouldn't be a surprise that hot off the heels of the Beatles 50th anniversary edition of Sgt Pepper comes a 50th anniversary edition of Their Satanic." Your'e making it sound like that the idea was taken from the Beatles. You don't put together a set like this in three months. I'm in touch with ABKCO Records who is releasing this box set, and I can tell you first hand that when they put something out it has probably been in the works for 12 to 24 months before it's release. And this was not put out by The Rolling Stones, it was put out by ABKCO Records.

I love the album. Definitely my favourite by The Rolling Stones. But I'm not gonna pay 100 dollars for this box set. I don't have a record player, so the vinyl is useless for me. And I really don't wanna pay $30 for the vinyl, $60 for the packaging and $10 for the CDs. The mono versions of half of the songs were released on some singles compilation in 1989, so I'd rather just get that for 1/10 the price of this box set. I mean, this is a joke. For 50th anniversary they could have added some outtakes and demos. I've heard some of them and they are interesting. Also, I wouldn't mind a stereo remix, because having all of the vocals in the left channel is just stupid. I don't know if it was supposed to sound more psychedelic that way, but it sounds like crap. Overall, this seems to me like a box set for people, who aren't really Stones fans. Because the fans already have the album and some of them have the mono versions. I don't see a reason to buy this. It would be just a waste of money.

TJR-It seems weird after so many, many years of collecting "Stones" albums, "Their Satanic...." was my first "Stones' album!! I got it with the original cover of course and I got it at my next door neighbor's yard sale when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade way back in good 'ol 1974. Up until that time I only collected mostly 45rpm records. I didn't quite understand the "LP" just yet. Anyway, I always liked the album. It was different. It surely wasn't "It's Only Rock And Roll" to say the least, but I did like it! (Pun Intended!!) Over the years I lost that copy and bought the Mobile Fidelity Box Set of The Rolling Stones. Boy what a jump in sound improvement!! As far as some of the songs on "Their Satanic...." goes, I always loved "2000 Light Years From Home" and "She's A Rainbow". There were a lot of special artists that joined the Stones on the album. On Bill Wyman's "In Another Land', we hear "Steve Marriot" of "Humble Pie" singing the lead vocal. On "Why Don't We Sing This All Together (See What Happens)" we get to hear Beatles and The Who and others helping out the Stones! AND, who can forget the Stones' tribute to Beatles-"Lucy In The Sky...." on the great "2000 Man'!! Ace Frehley of KISS recorded a fantastic version of that on the extremely underrated "KISS-Dynasty" album in 1979!!! ( I love THAT version!!)...OK, back to the Stones. Over the years I had to part with my Mobile Fidelity "Stones" Box Set, (believe me it broke my heart to do it) BUT in recent years I bought some of the "Abcko" reissues on clear vinyl and one of them was "Their Satanic...." It by far blew away even the MoFi versions!! I'm not sure if Bob Ludwig mastered the recent single clear vinyl releases but who ever did, they sound "F@#KING GREAT!! As much as I love the "Stones" and I will say as much as I love "Their Satanic...", at this point, I can't see my way to purchasing this release. I also have the recent remastered version on CD and I just don't see me getting it.........(Here's a little "clue" for You or perhaps those that don't know, but, If anyone does by this new release with the reproduction cover, take a good look at it and try to find the BEATLES on the cover with them!! They are individually spread out here and there around the Stones and You can only see the Beatles" faces but they are there!!!)

You Can't help but to compare the Stones releases to the Beatles. Like the Beatles, Decca Turned down the Stones. If it wasn't for George Harrison talking to Mike Smith, the Stones would not be given a second chance. I am thankful that Decca did turned down the Beatles. Revolver would probably be the Beatles first stereo album. Can you imagine the white album having only 9 songs with "Hey Jude" on it and the songs still unreleased to this day? For "Satanic" it would be nice that an extra disc of unreleased stuff be made available. "English Summer" was to be released as a single in 1967, but was replaced with "We Love You". Other tracks unreleased - You Can't always get what you want (22 Feb 67), Blow Me Mama (10 Mar 67), Surprise Me (3 Oct 67), She's Doing Her Thing (3 Oct 67), Fly High As A Kite (16-23 Oct 67). Remember, no Anthology set, no BBC set, no "Hey Crawdaddy" from France, etcetra. I wish EMI or HMV (RCA) had signed the Stones.

The Lines between Sonic improvement ,collectors edition and over all money grab all seam to be blurred. If these have not been remastered ,instead the stereo reissues from 2002 and mono from 2016 then its a money grab, if its your chance to own a flicker cover and have a nice booklet then its your nickel do as you wish. TJR,Save your money. Our Stones history tells us that this album, yes it was an album was ,to be kind an artistic embarrassment to Jagger for a long time. He thought the stereo mix was unlistenable, but i still love,Citadel,2000 man,and She a rainbow, their is still a mix of Nicky Hopkins and Brian that still gives it a bit of that old Stone album feel. i am totally sure that the Stones had absolutely no input on this project. I believe Alan Klines family controls the London catalog and that can do what they wish. With the success of Pepper reissue, its money making time.

DAVID KORNBLATT when I was a kid growing up I loved Sgt Pepper. But over the years it's kind of lost it's luster for me .

TJR I know it's weird I'm even hesitant to get the remix in Cd. I admit it sounds great but I feel happy with the 2009 remaster. With the Beatles my tastes change Now it's the White album and Abbey Road.

I can't think of a 50th anniversary release that could possibly interest me less than the release of this mediocre Stones' album. And when I say mediocre, I'm being extremely kind. Needless to say, I'll take a pass on this one.

Keith Richards: The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's' Was 'Rubbish'- Rolling Stone Where is your quote, David, about TSMR? Keith also said: Rap Is for 'Tone-Deaf People' - Rolling Stone. We can agree about that. :)

@@jlabsy9699 Remember - The Beatles were ultimate songwriters - they weren't into just making the album a 40 minute 'freakout.' The Beatles have a little more lyrical thought and complexity to their style. The Stones made TSMR more of a freakout affair. Loose jams that would evolve into Gong and Krautrock. Good/Great stuff but a different dimension than what The Beatles were striving for. Beatles tunes have a little more Dylan in them. The Stones have a little less Dylan and more lyrical posturing in them. I give The Stones credit - they pull it off. I give The Beatles a bit more credit because their songs hit my head and heart. So in a sense it is sad that TSMR was panned - but it's also The Stones fault - they never stood up for this album. They themselves panned two albums in a row. I totally agree with their dismissive attitude towards Between the Buttons - a bigger load of rubbish I've never heard.
