Yeah my biggest issue with these is the toilet channels who intentionally clog toilets in public restrooms with tp tests and just leave, for an employee to eventually have to unclog.. don’t be an ass. I personally think doing any types of tests (ridiculous tp included) should be done at the risk of your own plumbing, home toilets or collection.. but then again to each their own. Also kicking public toilets they dislike as i’ve seen quite a few channels do, like kicking Hard or even worse.. is just childish and could possibly cause cosmetic damage.

This is exactly right. And, the manufacturers don't tend to run their own tests in this manner either. Generally, they're using a few wadded up TP "balls" and then measuring out a specific amount of a "proprietary material" to act like "the usual stuff", and ensuring that the fixture will clear all of the items from the bowl in one flush. The testing has changed over the years, and probably wasn't so specific back in the old days because the fixtures could swallow quite a bit without breaking a sweat. On the upcoming Project Beyond series, any tests that we run will either be closer to what the manufacturers use, and we will probably develop our own testing methodology that can attempt to measure the performance limit of a fixture but not push it to the "actual" limit.

I totally agree with you, OCC Plumbing & Restorations. There are too many variables used in this type of test, each of which you mentioned. Sometimes I flush what I think is a normal amount of paper, and only in my 4 INSTALLED toilets to see if they will take all of the paper without spitting any of it back. The paper I use is Kirkland 2-Ply, since it's a good deal, and it is not like the thin scratchy stuff used in public restrooms and many homes, nor is it too thick like Charmin. Each toilet is using the same water pressure, and the tanks are filled to the correct level. The tests that you do on your uninstalled toilets are consistent, controlled, well thought out, and more accurate. My intentions were to video some of my toilets using microfiber cloths and dirt tests like you've been doing. Unfortunately, too many factors like near constant rain, equipment failures, family issues, and other interruptions have kept that from happening. I agree that intentionally trying to clog someone else's toilet with wads of paper and then bashing the toilet for not being able to do something that it was not designed to do is a bad idea. It also makes our community look bad as well. Keep up your good work, OCC Plumbing & Restorations!! VTVT

I'll admit, the most TP I usually try and test a toilet on is around 25 feet. Sometimes for vintage toilets I do up to 35 ft. The most I've ever done is 50 ft, but that was on a ridiculously poweful 90's 1.6 Madera, and even that I think is really pushing it. It is also a bit of a waste of toilet paper if you're gonna do that much regardless. I usually never do more than 25 ft anyway for toilet paper tests. For all the people who try and flush 50-100 feet down a toilet just for testing it, it ain't exactly the most fair thing for anyone, or for the toilet you are trying to test with this absurd amount. If the toilet clogs on it, don't automatically start hating on it because it couldn't take it down. Also, an absurd amount like 50-100 feet is very wasteful too.

I tend to agree. I'll flush some paper in a video once in a while but I've always intended it as more of an added visual affect and not in any way trying to reach the limits of the toilet. For those of us that have collections and do tests, we come up with our own ways of testing toilets to see how good they are but in my opinion they are all relative. One toilet may make another seem weak by comparison, but in use they may both go without problems for years. If I had the chance to install all of my toilets at some point, that is how I really prefer to know how good they are. I didn't think My Gabrielle would work that great when I tested it in my back yard, but when I used it for 2 weeks, it did a lot better than I thought. Not perfect, but it didn't clog.

Good point as yes the whole system of using TP tests are flawed as it condemns one toilet over another by using paper that is not universal (there are so many different types of TP around - even in the UK). Also I have seen some videos from other channels in the US (not mentioning any names) purposely trying to clog toilets in commercial buildings or any other public building with TP clogging them up to fail them on their ridiculously flawed tests - sometimes to the point of the bowl spilling over leaving them for the employee/cleaner to unclog - also kicking them because it failed the TP test which could result in damage to the fixture. Obviously if one wants to undergo these tests with their own collection at home (preferably outside) or even risk there own fixtures inside not recommended unless it is a small ball of TP as would use under normal usage) then that is okay. Your method of testing (using the cloths/bags/dish towels) in controlled conditions outside is a safe way of undertaking these tests under controlled conditions to test the maximum performance of a particular toilet which I do enjoy watching these (the older and vintage toilets always perform much better than the modern ones - but an average modern toilet would do just fine in normal circumstances of usage except the poorly made chinese examples - the UK washdown chinese copies are very poorly made and prone to clogging under normal usage with very weak flushes - and the Glacier "Trash" Bay from 2022). The UK channels I follow use just simple water tests in commercial settings unless it is their own collection where materials like TP (always the thin cheap stuff) or cloths/dish towels are flushed through. Great informative video on the subject!!!

(And I manage to do it, however its scary when it has a sensor) I kinda estimate how much it is by estimating the length to a ruler lol. This is why I rate toilets based on their flushes nowadays. I always test a toilet around 20-50 (50-75 for powerful toilets) Theres even a reason why I say 25-30ft or 25-30ft, because its between them.

Most have switched to Costco Kirkland 2-ply 🧻. It's realky good stuff. Average use per wipe is 3-4 sheets (informal asking, not scientific). That said, right after Covid-19 lockdown ended, the Kirkland 🧻 got a wee bit thinner, but not enough to change the sheets per wipe consumption. Why don't you do a scientific poll asking your channel 1) what brand 🧻 do you use, and 2) what's the average sheets/wipe consumption...? I thunk any 🧻 test should be based on those figures, if done at all. Gonna be important as water use per flush keeps dwindling.

There's not really any way to tell what brand of toilet paper is being used in a restroom unless you see the package. Most of it is just bulk ordered stuff from Georgia Pacific or Kimberly Clark or other companies like that. Some people also use thicker toilet paper without saying so and that way they can make a toilet look bad and justify their hatred towards it. Toilet paper tests never have and never will be accurate unless they're done at home with all the same kind of toilet paper on a controlled testing site. As for the Costco stuff, That's pretty good and that's what I have at home.
