HI Dave! I'm sure you have thought of this already, but the Arcturus bag works great to trap and hold some of the lost heat when making a dehydrated food meal such as Mountain house. There's usually a good few minutes needed to fully rehydrate the contents after adding the hot water. Often, by the time it's fully ready, it's only luke warm, particularly when it's cold out. Putting the pouch of food in the Arcturus bag (resealed) can make a big difference in how hot your meal is.

Love your videos and your ingenuity with self made equipment. I’m 71 years old and grew up camping and love the outdoors. After getting out of the service in 1972 I bought a down sleeping bag that I still use. As many outdoors ventures as I’ve participated in the weather conditions have varied widely. The coldest temperature I camped in was -3 degrees. My sleeping gear was an army sleeping bag cover like the old one you showed, the down bag, and a poncho liner. I have always has a problem with my feet getting cold in cold weather so to remedy that I tried wearing clean dry socks while sleeping. They helped somewhat except in freezing temps. The next attempt was to zip my coat up and slide it over the sleeping bag over my feet. That did the trick. Maybe this is too much but there may be some new folks just getting into outdoor adventures. In cold weather camping when getting in that sleeping bag be sure to take off all the clothes worn during the day. If you wear any clothing in the sleeping bag be sure it is dry and do not wear cotton material. It will absorb your escaping body moisture and keep you cold.

I remembered you showing your knives and machets a while back. I do like to buy blanks and put handles on them my self. I go to Ragnarock forge or Mora to get quality blanks but no way can I get a quality hacker by building it my self at my age. So I took your suggestion, and I do mean suggestion and sent off for an ontairo p-53. My daughter and I go camping still so that will come in handy. I remember as a kid I had what seemed like a fifteen pound ww1 trench machete and I remember hacking away bushes and logs it was fun. Long gone though. Learned how not to take off a leg. It was dull from most likly hitting rocks so if it didhit my leg it would hurt but that hurt taught me how not to do it again. Later in life I hand split all the winters wood supply. I loved splitting wood. use to cut and split about five cords .When I lived up Vermont it was fifteen cords but we had wood cook stoves as well. I didn't split those fifteen cords. We bought that wood already split. I like making kindling. Kind of a meditation for me. Well thanks for listening to my ramble. Stay safe. peace

Dave, Thanks for a great video. On the subject of Ray's ax, I would recommend hanging a new handle (custom made if you have a piece of good wood) and maybe inlet a small piece of the old handle to keep a part of it for memory. But the old handle appears to be damaged to the point it could be dangerous. I am not a Safety Sally, just wouldn't like to see anyone get hurt.

Dave, I enjoyed your story about Ray's axe in this video and the other one too. It kind of remindes me of the time I was in a used book store just looking around when I came across a big old family Bible with the name Frizbee emobossed on the cover printed in 1871. The price tag was only 20 bucks so I bought it. I never learned the story behind it but there were some things you could tell from looking at it. It had a section where you could put pictures of family members. The pictures of the people contained therin spanned the time from when it was probably gifted to it's owner all the way up until the 1930s judging from the way the people in them were dressed. It was probably handed down from gerneration to generation. There were other stories it told by small items pressed between the pages. Things like a small lock of baby's hair tied with a little piece of ribbon probably from some little girl who was a member of the Frizbee family. There were little flowers pressed between pages - perhaps a memento from some special occasion. The fact that it was in the used book store to begin with even told a story. Probably the last Frizbee who cared about the book passed on, it then being sold in an estate sale much like Ray's axe. Now I am the care taker and trustee of the Frizbee family Bible and it lives on the shelf in my closet. I always enjoy your videos Dave. Keep 'em coming! Mark

Hello Mark! Im glad you liked it and thats very interesting on that bible! Im sure it hold untold memories and stories. Often times you can find info on families on the Find A Grave website. I looked and theres only the name Frizbee as middle names. Click on this link and read the story then look under the listing for the siblings name Frizbee Davis Jr and tell me what you think www.findagrave.com/memorial/25099948/frisbee-davis

@@Reallybigmonkey1 - wow you really got me wondering so I went in the other room and looked at the book and turns out I had the spelling wrong. It was Frisbie. I did the search for just that and it came up with over 300,000 hits. When I tried adding the initials of the man and woman that it belonged to then I got nothing. Oh well, for me the important part is saving it and preserving it. I don't hang on to many books but I sort of felt some kind of sentimental about this one for some reason

Hey Dave, I have a “sleeping bag, Arctic, outer shell, M-1949” along with a “sleeping bag, mountain, M-1949” and the “case, sleeping bag, M-1945”. They all three will lace together into a “MSS style” system. It’s very heavy compared to the modern style MSS, but extremely warm with the polyester filled mountain bag inside the Arctic outer shell down bag inside the cover! Id recommend a can of scotch guard spray on the outer cover to enhance the “water repellency”
