The Secret History is so fab, I loved it. I read it for a book club where everyone else really hated it, but the more they talked about the things they didn't enjoy about it, the more I was like OMG I LOVED THAT BIT. Came out with it firmly entrenched as a five star read, and everyone else united in hating it. 😂

The Argos catalogue spring 2014 is a particular big book favourite of mine, and I know most folks will tell you summer 2012 is the stand out of the series, but the way that the vacuum cleaners flow effortlessly into the food mixers in 2014 is a dance of sucking and blending that defines the genre.

Such an amazing list! Sadly, even though I was so excited to read it, Secret History just ended up being one of those books that was not for me and I had trouble not feeling guilty because everyone else seems to love it. I do have Italian Folktales, the Iliad, Daughter of the Forest, several Robin Hobb books, and Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle on my TBR shelves and your praise has made me even more excited to get to them (definitely going to pick up the last of those first because I have been meaning to read it since it came out in November). Great video as always 😄

Oooh maybe I should take the Calvino folk tales to Italy with me next week? I’ve still not read Alias Grace, I must head to it as it sounds like all the things I love... in a bloody Atwood book. I thought The Secret History was pretty ace, weirdly I’ve not read her others and not been tempted, not sure why.

Ugh yes take Calvino to Italy! He belongs there and you'll love him. And I'm the same aha I've never been drawn to Donna Tartt's other books.

A few 500+ books come to mind, excluding anthologies and taking into consideration that page count varies by edition: "The Iliad," "Don Quixote," "The Canterbury Tales," "The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass," "The Class Struggle In The Ancient Greek World," "Debt: The First 5,000 Years."

I love The Secret History! I didn't like the Iliad that much though. Personally I really love The Count of Monte Cristo! Also apparently The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue is over 500 pages, and that's a really fun book too (also highly recommend it's sequel, which I liked even more).

I loved the Seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle but totally understand those that didn't. Alias Grace is also a fave. Been meaning to get to the Secret History for a long time now. I have been reading Dan Simmons intro to his Tome Carrion Comfort today and he was speaking of how difficult it is to get a Tome like that printed. It makes you wonder how many longer books never get published!!!

I also adored Alias Grace (and disliked Cat's Eye, heh) - it never felt like a "big" book to me because I was so engrossed in the story. A few of my 500+ favorite novels are Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, and The Hummingbird's Daughter by Luis Alberto Urrea.

I adore The Secret History - It’s currently sitting on my desk queued up for my third read-through. I’m definitely interested in The Seven (and a Half) Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, as I believe it’s called in America. Hopefully sometime this summer I’ll get around to it! I think I started Eragon far too young - age seven or so - and it scared me very badly. I remember reading about a pile of corpses with a dead baby impaled on spear on top, and then deciding no more Eragon for me, thanks. I’d be curious to see how I’d feel reading it now, though.

Totally thought you were gonna pull out the Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle(which is on my tbr for this year)... I mean it was right behind you. I started The Secret History but the use of the word "Fag" really got to me so I didn't continue. Brief History by Marlon James sounds intriguing. I read Daughter of the Forest on your recommendation last year. The Lies of Locke Lamora is a book you might enjoy and its over 500 pages(currently has three books out in the series),and it also jumps back in time to give us more about the characters.

I'm definitely always a little scared of big books because of how much time I need to commit to reading them. With a 300 page book, if I give it three stars, I'm pretty happy because I read a book I enjoyed and it didn't take that long. If the book is 800 pages, however, that 3 star book is now disappointing to me because I committed so much time to reading a book that I only thought was okay.

I've been interested in reading Alias Grace for some time, it sounds so amazing to me! I'm slowly making my way through Robin Hobb's books :) The Secret History is one my favorite book ever 😍 I'm thiking of rereading again this year :p I thought A Brief History of Seven Killings was great but it was not an easy read for me, both because of the writing and of things that happened in it as you mentioned, definitely worth a read though! Some big books I loved are 11/22/63, Cloud Atlas, The Sympathizer, anything by Robin Hobb, all the books in the Passage trilogy (though the first one is a bit slow in the middle) and The Goldfinch 😊

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (didn't it used to be 7 1/2?) is a great audiobook if you choose to do a re-read. It has a great narrator who does the different voices so well. And I think hearing the book, particularly the way it opens, where the character immediately has no idea what's going on, is really effective. Also can't wait to read The Secret History. I DNF'd Eragon a couple of years ago but I think I should go back and give it a second chance.

... i read Daughter of the Forest in 2009. I loved it, but remember feeling like the ending was disappointing - like the story was not over! And when I looked it up online, I learned that the next book in the series was about another character, and just gave up. Flashforward to now, when I'm frowning while watching your video because my copy of Daughter of the Forest is barely 350 pages long. Another internet seach later... Turns out that, in my country, they divided the book in two!! So I've only ever read the first half of the story!! That explains so much, but also it's so so frustrating!! I love big books, why would they choose to publish it in this way?? >< Now I have to buy the second book / the second half of the first book...

This is a GREAT list!!!!! I’m going to buy Robin Hobb when I come to London next month. I’m also currently reading The Secret History and omg is brilliant. I adore Evelyn Hardcastle. I still need to read Juliet Marrilier and Margaret Atwood. I was never interested in The Handmaid’s Tale, so I may try Alias Grace. Also thank you for the recommendation to read Italo Calvino. I’ve been eyeing it for years but wasn’t sure if it was good. Do you prefer The Iliad over The Odyssey? Again, great list!!! 😊😊

I've read and loved Daughter of the Forest! I had already started it but was thinking about getting rid of it because I really struggled with the first 100 pages or so, but when you started posting videos raving about the book and the author I decided to give it another shot and I'm so glad I did! I've only read two of her books so far but I'm absolutely desperate for more! Also, I've read The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle and while on the one hand I get the hype on the other I was extremely put off by the fat shaming in the book. The descriptions and dialogue of the overweight character Ravencourt were really hard for me to get through because they were disgusting and stereotypical and I really, really hated it. I know the book is good otherwise, but I'm honestly really shocked I don't ever hear people talking about it.
