Good to see you still going and doing well Cody. I remember when you were first starting out and my daughter Shannon, MissCamo/Youth2Wild was trying to give you shoutouts to help you grow. Still putting out good content and I am digging the beard. Keep it going. Sadly Shannon opted out of doing videos when she came to the US and took down most of hers. Well good to see you again.

I'm glad to hear that. I remember a couple years ago I tried searching for her channel to no avail. Glad she and yourself are doing well.

The only thing I could add would be go out and practice starting a fire and building a shelter with the items that will be used. As always this is a great video.

I live in the PNW and usually carry a trash bag in my kit. Useful as an emergency poncho, lean-to roof, or 90% of the time, to pack out rubbish left behind by the morons on my way back.

Thanks, Cody. All of your videos are very informative. Also, the advantage of a saw is that using it (instead of a knife) conserves energy. That’s particularly important when you’re lost and I don’t have much food. Best wishes from the San Francisco Bay Area. Stay well. Stay safe.

I have almost all of these items, except for the canteen and I need to find a good all around fixed blade knife and get a bug-out bag ready. Time for a trip back to Corky's Military Surplus (if they're open). Life-straws are good to have, too. I've been the mountains where I had absolutely no cell phone reception but I could still use the GPS on my phone.

If you need a fixed-blade knife, but you’re on a tight budget, consider a Swedish-made Mora Companion, which costs about $17. If you’re willing to spend $70, the Gerber Strongman is an excellent knife. It’s tough, American-made, and comes with a terrific sheath.

I really like the Sawyer filters - effective and economical even if not the easiest day in day out. One manor drawback: they freeze very easily which destroys their effectiveness, yet there's no practical field test I know of to confirm one way or other. One hour of oversight in dropping temperatures (when exertion makes it seem not so cold) is enough to ruin these filters, and I think it happens more than people know - sad bc otherwise I really like them.

Another good source of cordage is to always wear a elastic belt. The type that is made from hundreds of strands. In a survival situation you can always unravel the belt to get a pretty good length of cordage.

I like using super glue or Krazy glue to even minor or big cuts that gone through my finger I still have a purple scar on my main finger I can see it now as I'm leaving this message. But I prefer that over Band-Aids any day because Band-Aids just you go through many and infection and get wet plus you can feel the pain weeks after the cut with the super glue and Krazy glue or there's this new skin thing it seals off your wound and cuts downinfection you can also put a little bit of antibiotic cream and then layers of super glue and Krazy glue and then reply it over days or hours if needed.

I carry both a folding saw and a lightweight ax (neither one expensive), so I don't often need a dedicated survival knife. I do have two smaller blades (one fixed kitchen type knife I mostly use for food, but can use for defense, and a blade that goes with my folding fork/spoon can opener which I use for small stuff, carving, etc.) I do think that some kind of "heavy" blade is a must. It doesn't have to be a Rambo knife, just something you can use a wood baton on for splitting, and preferably a good carbon steel that holds a good edge. My small Ax qualifies. Another thing I try to always have is a map - this isn't always easy for a long distance hiker as detailed maps have become very expensive for covering hundreds of miles. This is one (of many) reason why most hikers now rely on devices, but such dependence on fragile electronics is an invitation (sooner or later) to great disaster. When I have a map (topographic of course), it is far more useful to me than a compass alone. There are many ways to orient one'self for direction (map alone is one very good way), but basic compass skills are easier to come by than effective map and landnav skills. I've had years and years of experience and I know that folks who are fixated on their electronics tend to grumble at investing even minutes on true skills that require hundreds of hours for serious proficiency.

Re compass: the _vast_ majority of trekkers/hikers who need to be rescued have gone off the trail, been turned around and cannot find their way back to the trail. Had they simply taken a compass bearing where they left the trail, and counted their paces going in, they would have easily been able to return to the trail. There should be a stupidity fine levied on anyone requiring SAR because they didn't carry and use a compass.

One item I would add to that kit is a small ziplock plastic bag containing some Vaseline-soaked cotton balls to aid with fire starting. Nothing better for fire starting in difficult conditions. Weighs nothing and can be compressed.

Why do you dislike aluminium canteens ?
@DavidB-vk8ei

Aluminum is really bad for you. Don't cook with it or store food in it. Stainless steel is best. Plastics not good for you either.
@lyca0n535

@@DavidB-vk8ei Not really chromium in stainless is way worse if consumed enough and aluminium oxide and in its pure form is a inert metal in the human body so would probably just circulate until filtered by the kidneys. If not then can lead to toxicity or acute toxicity but that's rare and both probably above levels consumable from oxidation in a canteen. Besides was asking Cody

I would add Bug Spray (Deet) believe me you will be happy you did. If you have to spend the night in the woods, mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers etc. will eat you alive, and you will have the most miserable night of your life.
IMHO, a cell phone, and battery pack are NOT survival items. Plus, not everyone is gonna be in the woods in a survival situation, ya gotta consider what ya would need in an urban environment.
