Capcom vs snk 2 and street fighter 3 were a tad bit better on PlayStation 2 other than That Dreamcast had the better ports usually for 2d fighters. I think in terms of capcom fighters Dreamcast had a ton. If we’re talking in general ps2 has much more fighters. The only ps2 fighters for capcom that was on ps2 and not on Dreamcast were capcom fighting evolution which was just decent. And then street fighter ex3 which I never played yet and I think that was about it 😂 I play cvs2 and sf3 on ps2 but those are on Dreamcast as well so there not unique to ps2. But snk, Namco, midway and other companies were killing it. King of fighters series for me was at its prime on ps2, tekken series, soul calibur series, guilty gear x2 and accent core, bloody roar 3 and 4, virtual fighter 4 evolution, mortal kombat series. Dragon ball z fighting games were in there prime. But for some reason capcom abandon fighter after capcom fighting evolution. Now capcom was killing it with adventure games but they abondend fighters but then returned with sf4

100% agree, the music in Marvel Vs Capcom 2 has no place in a fighting game. Also, the sound effects I think were mono. And yes, Soulcalibur on Dreamcast was phenomenal. (and yes that's a friend cosplaying as Taki in my KZitem avatar) Anyway, its a shame both series have strayed so very far from what made them so great in the first place. Although they screwed it up royally, Namco at least tried to get back to basics with the story in SCVI. Sadly the gameplay also failed to recapture the magic that made this series so great.

The stages transition to new areas seamlessly, as do the next matches. It's just all so slick, it looks like it is running on the Dreamcast effortlessly. The DC is just console perfection - it literally covers every genre that was popular at the time. I absolutely knew SC would be number one - when you talk about what a "next gen" experience actually is, then flash back to 1999 when you would see SC running on a kiosk. There is absolutely NO WAY you were not blown away by the visuals. It was eons ahead of the arcade version, and as you said, still blows away in 2020. In fact, I dare say the DC era is the last console era that "wowed" me. That true next-gen advancement has never been so powerfully obvious in any subsequent console release since.

Outside of the top 10, there are some really fun games as well that I still play a lot despite their flaws -- most notably Tech Romancer/Kikaioh, and Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram. Fun video and good to hear your thoughts. Also, it's an interesting exercise in pitting the two machines. There's a solid case for either one depending on your criteria. Dreamcast has lots of RAM so there are fewer compromises to make. But I'd pick the Saturn because I preferred the fighting games from the period the machine was out over the Dreamcast and later fighting games. For example, I didn't like the direction Capcom took with later games. I was not fond of their art direction starting with Alpha, some of their music choices, their 3D backgrounds, and even the announcer in Alpha 3. That's all a matter of taste, and it just didn't suit mine. I saw King of Fighters '97 in a shop -- it was next to a Street Fighter 3 cabinet, which is what I went to see -- and it immediately renewed my enthusiasm for 2D fighters. I loved so much about KOF. That continued to the Dreamcast, and KOF '98/Dream Match '99 would be my favorite fighting game for the system. But I was more into the fighting genre during the Saturn era and tried more things then. I think I'll find your Saturn list even more interesting and I look forward to it.

Would love to see you do a video on the Top 10 Sega games to not be released on a Sega console. I say this as someone who grew up on Sega consoles (Master System and Mega Drive) but didn't own any other console between the Mega Drive and PS3. Some games I made sure to hunt down when I got my PS3 included Virtua Fighter 5, Virtua Tennis 3 and Daytona USA.

VF3tb was the fighting game of choice for us back in the day (since we had played the hell out of VF2 on Saturn), all the way until VF4 arrived on PS2. I still think AM2 should have kept the uneven terrain in some stages of 4 and 5, as I simply loved the concept. I had played VF3 in the arcade shortly before, and the port was pretty close for a launch game IMO. Visually, I think DOA2 easily takes the crown on Dreamcast, with Soul Calibur being a close second. And KoF Dream Match 99 is absolutely gorgeous in its own right. I've never seen more subtle polygon backgrounds with "hand-drawn" textures on them ever again.

I love the dreamcast as the next guy, but people need to get a bit educated... The Dreamcast only had 2 arcade perfect ports, those being Cvs2 and mvc2 since they're based on the Naomi board. The rest like 3s,garou,etc etc are inferior to their ps2 counterparts. Alfa3 is way better on the saturn btw.

I felt the Saturn had better original 2d/3d fighters. And the Dreamcast just improved them. There vs. series started there, Virtua fighter was better there, street fighter alpha 3 was better there, and original fighters like fighters megamix was there. Don't get me wrong though, power stone and soul caliber was amazing even to this day. But in my opinion, the original version of some of these fighters on the Saturn set the stage for the Dreamcast classics we love today. That's why the Saturn fighters are better.

So many great games, most of my Dreamcast favourites are fighters! VF3tb was a release titel here in Europe, so it had a honeymoon with my console. I soon moved on to SC, DOA2 and the rest. I love Street Fighter 3 Third Strike. It’s head to head with Soul Calibur and MvsC2 for me. But there are so many greats to choose from, Power Stone is great, and JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure is super cool. I’m very interested in Hyper SF2 for matching services, but don’t have a way to play Japanese games. I’ve heard good things about Garou: MotW too.

Great list! Strong support for VF3tb. Would've even put it higher on the list, as I'm not huge on Guilty Gear (though it's gorgeous). VF3 seemed perfect for the DC controller. Loved it in the arcade, loved it on the DC. Also second the motion for Plasma Sword. It is seriously way up there for me, top 5 easily. For the humor as well as the action and weirdness. Definitely would've included Power Stone 1 if the list were mine, as well as likely Ready 2 Rumble because I'm insane. But really, R2R looks REALLY great on DC even now.

OMG SLX!!!! I cannot tell you how grateful and excited I am that you made this video. I’ve been patiently waiting for this one. Sega Dreamcast was a fighting game players DREAM, no pun intended. The DC had a MASSIVE influx of fighting games. Thank you, and be blessed my brother. Top 10 fighting games are...... 10. Virtua Fighter 3tb 9. DOA2 8. Soul Calibur 7. Virtual On Orotario Tangram 6. Power Stone 5. Project Justice 4. King of fighters Dream Match 3. Fatal Fury Mark of the Wolves 2. Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike 1. Capcom VS SNK 2 (import) I was 16 years old back in the year 2000 when the original CVS dropped, and just when I saw Capcom and SNK get together to make a crossover game, my teenage mind was system overload BLOWN to see the two mecha giants for 2-D fighting games crossover. I also agree that you’re right we need a 3rd entry already. Thank you SLX.

Awesome vid SLX. Never had a Dreamcast but I ALWAYS knew it was a beast of a console. I was a PS2 person and although it had it's share of fighting games, the DC had amazing fighters that you could only get there. Cannot wait for your Saturn Fighting Top 10 vid. Great content as always.

Street Fighter Zero 3 is amazing. It has so much content. 3rd Strike is excellent also when you input the 240p code. I have some complaints about Capcom's decisions with some of these games: Street Fighter III 3rd Strike needed a code to be in 240p (Why?). Zero 3 didn't have RGB/240P support (Why?). Strangely, the PAL release did. And Super Street Fighter IIX For Matching Service didn't have RGB/240P support either (Why?).

Soul Calibur, what an introduction to this glorious system. To see Namco deliver this masterpiece on it's long time rivals system was truly the stuff of dreams and made for an unforgettable introduction to this generation.

This is a very elite top 10 to crack. Honorable mentions: Marvel vs Capcom 1 Street Fighter 3: Double Impact Street Fighter 3: Third Strike Power Stone Power Stone 2 Mortal Kombat Gold Psychic Force Virtual On Tangram Ontario (sp?) Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves Sega always had an arcade mentality. Sega always seemed to ignore the "made for home" market compared to Nintendo and Sony. Most of Nintendo's exclusive hits were "made for the home" and would stink as arcade games. But Sega owned the Arcade-Style market.

The fact that stuff like Mark of the Wolves, Last Blade 2, Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, Power Stone 1 or 2, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure aren't on this list show's how deep the list of excellent fighters are on the Dreamcast. And I'm sure it'll be the same when the Saturn list comes out too.

I find making a Top 10 so much more difficult than making Top 20's or more. You really need to hunker down and discriminate everything to do a top 10. You just can't throw every decent game in it and be done. In a top 10, something deserving always gets left out.

One thing i liked about Marvel Vs capcom 2 that rarely gets mentioned...the fact you had to unlock characters i found by that way i was not overwhelmed by the characters up front and i would gradually try them as they were unlocked
